Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that OSV-SCALIBR (version 0.3.6 through 0.5.0) be invoked to scan an attacker-controlled VMDK disk image, and that the scan reach the embedded VMDK filesystem extractor for FAT32, ext4, or NTFS filesystems. The attacker must control the scan target content (the crafted image with directory entries whose names contain path-separator/traversal sequences); they do not need credentials on the host. Limiting factors: the attacker cannot trigger this remotely against the scanner service directly - a user or automation must actually run a scan against the malicious image (UI:P / AV:L), and impact severity scales with the scanner's process privileges (writing outside the destination directory is most dangerous when the scanner runs as root in CI/container pipelines). Versions before 0.3.6 or at/after the PR #2030 fix are not affected.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 base score of 6.9 (medium) reflects a genuine but constrained risk profile. The vector CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:H/VA:H is internally consistent with the description: the attack vector is Local (AV:L) because exploitation requires the target to actually scan an attacker-supplied VMDK image rather than reaching the scanner over a network, and UI:P captures the passive user/automation action of initiating a scan. Impact is integrity- and availability-focused (VI:H/VA:H, VC:N) since arbitrary file write outside the destination directory can overwrite host files or plant executables but does not directly disclose data. PR:N is defensible because no authentication to the scanner is required - the trust boundary is the untrusted scan target itself. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code are present in the input, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The realistic elevation comes from deployment context: OSV-SCALIBR is a supply-chain/SBOM scanner often run in CI/CD and container-analysis pipelines, sometimes as root, where an attacker-controlled artifact (e.g., a malicious disk image submitted for scanning) is exactly the input the tool ingests. This is a real priority for organizations running the affected 0.3.6-0.5.0 versions in automated pipelines, but not a mass-exploitable remote flaw. Key limiting signal: the local vector and required scanning action mean exploitation is opportunistic against automated scanners, not broadly wormable.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious VMDK image whose embedded FAT32/ext4/NTFS filesystem contains directory entries with path-traversal sequences (names containing '/'), then gets it into a scanning pipeline - for example by submitting it to an automated malware/SBOM analysis service or committing it to a repository scanned in CI. When OSV-SCALIBR's embedded VMDK filesystem extractor unpacks the image, insufficient path validation lets extracted files escape the destination directory and write to arbitrary host locations. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the fix diff clearly reveals the missing '/'-containing-name filter, making the flaw trivially reproducible.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026

Path traversal in Google OSV-SCALIBR versions 0.3.6 through 0.5.0 allows an attacker who controls a scanned VMDK disk image to write arbitrary files outside the extractor's destination directory on the host running the scan, corrupting or overwriting host files. The CVSS 4.0 base score of 6.9 (medium) reflects a genuine but constrained risk profile: the CVSS vector shows PR:N (no host credentials needed) but also AV:L and UI:P/UI:R, so a user or automation must actually run a scan against the malicious image, and impact scales with the privileges of the scanner process (most dangerous in root-running CI or container pipelines). No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is addressed upstream by PR #2030.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - apply the change from PR #2030 (https://github.com/google/osv-scalibr/pull/2030), which adds "/"-containing entry filtering to the FAT32, ext4, and NTFS extractor filters, and track Google's release notes/CHANGELOG for the first tagged OSV-SCALIBR version beyond 0.5.0 that includes it. Because the released patched version number is not independently confirmed here, do not assume any specific version is fixed until verified against the upstream commit or a vendor advisory. Until a patched build is deployed, the most effective compensating control is to avoid scanning untrusted VMDK images with OSV-SCALIBR; if untrusted images must be scanned, run the scanner as an unprivileged, non-root user inside a locked-down container or sandbox with the destination directory on a writable mount isolated from host paths and with read-only access to everything else, accepting that legitimate extractions may still fail or land in the sandbox rather than the host. Organizations can also pre-filter or reject VMDK images whose directory entries contain path separators, but that requires custom tooling and risks false negatives. The scanner should never be executed as root against attacker-controlled images, since the arbitrary-write impact is bounded by the process privileges.

Technical ContextAI · show details

OSV-SCALIBR is Google's open-source software composition analysis scanner, and its embeddedfs extractor mounts and walks filesystems inside VMDK disk images. The root cause is CWE-22 (improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory): the directory-entry filters in extractor/filesystem/embeddedfs/common/common.go only rejected ".", "..", "lost+found" (and, for NTFS, "$"-prefixed names), so a crafted FAT32, ext4, or NTFS directory entry whose name contains a "/" path separator was treated as a benign filename and passed through to extraction logic, allowing the resolved output path to escape the intended destination directory. The fix in PR #2030 extends filterEntriesFat32, filterEntriesExt, and filterEntriesNtfs with a strings.Contains(name, "/") check that drops any entry containing a path separator, closing the traversal vector at the filesystem-entry filtering layer rather than relying on downstream path normalization. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:google:osv-scalibr:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies OSV-SCALIBR as the sole affected product; the vulnerable window is specifically 0.3.6 through 0.5.0, and versions before 0.3.6 or at/after the PR #2030 fix are not affected.

DescriptionCVE.org

A path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) in the embedded VMDK filesystem extractor in Google OSV-SCALIBR versions 0.3.6 through 0.5.0 allows an attacker who controls the scan target to write arbitrary files to the host system. When scanning crafted VMDK images, insufficient validation of archive path entries allows file extractions to escape destination directories.
