| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a Cotonti (through 1.0.0) administrator to be authenticated with an active session AND to be tricked into visiting an attacker-controlled page or clicking a malicious link (UI:P) while that session is valid. The specific vulnerable action is the user-group deletion handler in system/admin/admin.users.php, which omits the anti-CSRF (xg/token) verification that the vendor's PR #1908 adds elsewhere. There are no authentication prerequisites for the attacker themselves (PR:N), but the attack cannot succeed without the victim admin's live session and interaction, which meaningfully limits opportunistic exploitation. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-to-moderate priority issue. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P) reflects a classic CSRF pattern: the attacker needs no privileges of their own (PR:N) but the attack rides an authenticated administrator's session and requires that admin to interact with attacker-controlled content (UI:P), which is a meaningful limiting factor. Impact is scoped to integrity and availability of authorization data (VC:N/VI:L/VA:L) - deleting custom user groups and their permissions - with no confidentiality exposure and no scope change, consistent with the 5.3 score. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no signal of active or automated exploitation; the SSVC framework is not supplied either. The vulnerability is confirmed by the source and a fix exists, but the reliance on tricking a logged-in admin and the destructive-only (not RCE/data-theft) impact keep real-world risk modest. No conflicting signals were found: the description (admin session riding) matches the CVSS vector (PR:N + UI:P) accurately. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious web page or link that issues a forged request to admin.users.php's group-deletion endpoint and lures a logged-in Cotonti administrator into visiting it. Because the deletion action lacks anti-CSRF token verification, the admin's browser silently submits the request using their active session, deleting a custom user group and its associated permissions. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the technique is trivial to construct. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 28, 2026
Cross-site request forgery in Cotonti CMS through 1.0.0 lets an attacker who lures an authenticated administrator to a malicious page delete custom user groups and their associated permissions without any token verification. The vulnerable logic sits in system/admin/admin.users.php (around lines 136-140), where the user-group deletion action executes without the framework's anti-CSRF (xg) check, so a forged request simply rides the administrator's live session. From the assessed vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L) the attacker needs no credentials of their own but cannot succeed without an administrator's valid session and interaction, which keeps this a low-to-moderate priority issue; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, there is no evidence of confirmed active exploitation, and the vendor has published fix code.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - apply the vendor's fix from https://github.com/Cotonti/Cotonti/pull/1908 (referenced alongside issue #1907), which introduces the missing cot_check_xg() anti-CSRF validation on state-changing handlers and adds cot_xg() tokens to the corresponding form actions, and then verify in the deployed build that the group-deletion handler in system/admin/admin.users.php (lines ~136-140) actually performs the token check before considering the site patched. Because the published diff shows token additions in the forums and page modules rather than admin.users.php, do not assume a generic upgrade is sufficient - confirm the specific handler is covered. If the fix cannot be deployed immediately, use compensating controls with known trade-offs: require administrators to use a dedicated browser profile or log out before browsing untrusted sites, set SameSite=Strict on the Cotonti session cookie and enforce Origin/Referer validation at the reverse proxy (may break legitimate cross-origin integrations and some SSO flows), restrict access to the /system/admin path by source IP or place it behind a VPN/re-authentication prompt (cumbersome for administrators on dynamic or mobile networks), or add a WAF rule that rejects admin-panel requests lacking the expected xg token parameter (tuning required to avoid false positives on legitimate admin traffic). Note that the referenced PR also tightens redirect handling and output escaping in message.php and modules/page, and broadens datas/.htaccess denial rules; those changes are worth applying together with the CSRF token fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Cotonti is an open-source PHP content management system built around a module/plugin architecture, and like most PHP CMS platforms it protects state-changing administrative actions with a per-user token generated by cot_xg() and validated by cot_check_xg() - commonly passed as the xg/x URL parameter or hidden form field. The flaw class is CWE-352 (Cross-Site Request Forgery): the group-deletion handler in system/admin/admin.users.php omits that validation, so the application cannot distinguish a legitimate administrator's request from one forged by a third-party page that triggers the same URL in the victim's browser. Because the deletion of a group also drops the permissions bound to it, the request has a persistent administrative-configuration effect rather than a transient one. The vulnerability is tracked under CPE cpe:2.3:a:cotonti:cotonti:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (any version of the product, assessed against the 1.0.0 source tree) and was reported by VulnCheck. Notably, the vendor's referenced fix (PR #1908) is a broad CSRF/hardening pass: it adds cot_check_xg() to state-changing handlers in modules/forums/inc/forums.newtopic.php, modules/forums/inc/forums.posts.php, modules/page/inc/page.add.php and modules/page/inc/page.edit.php, injects the cot_xg() token into the corresponding generated form-action URLs, tightens redirect validation and output escaping in message.php and modules/page, and widens datas/.htaccess to deny serving of .php[3-8], .phtml, .phar, .svg, .html and similar file extensions - indicating the group-deletion token gap was identified as part of a wider anti-CSRF cleanup.

DescriptionCVE.org
Cotonti through 1.0.0 contains a cross-site request forgery vulnerability in admin.users.php that allows attackers to delete user groups without token verification. Attackers can craft malicious links or pages that trick authenticated administrators into deleting custom groups and their associated permissions by riding the administrator's session.
