2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation is limited to the local host (AV:L): the attacker must be able to supply or influence file/directory path arguments passed into AI-Infra-Guard's skill-scan or mcp-scan file tools (the dir_tree, write_file, and grep actions), and requires low-level privileges plus passive user interaction (UI:P) - i.e. an operator running a scan over attacker-controlled paths or content. The specific defect is that the directory-containment guard used a prefix check (abs_path.startswith(folder)) instead of a canonical-path check, so exploitation depends on the scanner processing a path that either escapes via traversal or shares a string prefix with the allowed folder (e.g. a sibling directory). It is NOT remotely reachable, NOT unauthenticated, and does not affect a default network-exposed service; the local vector, required privileges, and required user interaction are the principal limiting factors. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-risk issue and the raw numbers agree with that reading. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) scores just 0.9, reflecting local-only attack vector, required privileges, required user interaction (passive), and only Low technical impact across confidentiality, integrity, and availability with no scope change. EPSS and KEV are both absent, and while a public exploit reference exists (the GitHub issue #538), that indicates 'publicly available exploit code exists' - NOT active exploitation. There is no conflicting signal here: every source points the same direction (low real-world urgency). The one nuance worth stating is that VulDB-originated CVEs of this kind are often researcher-driven proof-of-concepts against emerging open-source projects rather than attacker-prioritized targets, and the source diff confirms this is a prefix-matching flaw (os.path.startswith used instead of os.path.commonpath) inside a security-scanning tool's own working-directory guard - a bounded, local-context weakness rather than a remotely reachable server flaw. This is a low priority to patch on normal cadence, not an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can influence the file or directory paths fed to AI-Infra-Guard's skill/MCP scanning tools supplies a path that shares a prefix with the intended scan folder (e.g. a sibling path like '/scan-folder-evil') or otherwise escapes it, because the guard only checks abs_path.startswith(folder). Because exploitation is local and requires user interaction (the operator running a scan on attacker-supplied content), the scanner then lists, reads, or writes files outside its intended sandbox directory. A public proof-of-concept is referenced in the vendor's own GitHub issue tracker (#538). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 28, 2026
Local path traversal in Tencent AI-Infra-Guard (versions up to 4.5.2 and the 4.6.2 line referenced by the vendor report) lets an attacker who can influence the file or directory path arguments processed by the scanner's skill-scan and mcp-scan file tools escape the configured working directory, reading or writing files outside the intended root. The defect is a directory-containment check that used a plain string prefix comparison rather than a canonical-path comparison, so both traversal sequences and sibling directories with a shared name prefix bypass it; exploitation requires local access with low privileges plus passive user interaction, since an operator must run a scan over attacker-influenced paths or content. Publicly available exploit code exists (referenced through the vendor's GitHub issue tracker), and the vendor has shipped a fix in the v4.6.0 release; the CVSS 4.0 score of 0.9 reflects the heavily constrained local attack path, and this analysis agrees with the independent assessment that the practical risk is low.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patch by upgrading Tencent AI-Infra-Guard to the fixed release referenced in the advisory, v4.6.0 (https://github.com/Tencent/AI-Infra-Guard/releases/tag/v4.6.0), which contains PR https://github.com/Tencent/AI-Infra-Guard/pull/539 and commit ac0384edc9dbea3b226edefcf50613bd8509134f; because the reported affected ranges (up to 4.5.2 and 4.6.2) conflict with the stated fix version, confirm your build includes that commit before treating the issue as closed, and if you build from source, cherry-pick the commit. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensation is practical because the attack path is local and interaction-driven: only run skill-scan/mcp-scan over paths and content you trust, restrict scan targets to a dedicated source-only directory tree, and run the scanner under an unprivileged account inside a container with read-only bind mounts and no access to sensitive host paths (the trade-off is reduced scan coverage and extra container setup); avoid auto-approving or auto-running tool calls that expand directories or write files, since the UI:P/UI:R component means an operator's confirmation is part of the exploit chain. Note that the upstream fix canonicalizes paths with os.path.realpath and compares with os.path.commonpath, so any local backport must avoid prefix-style checks entirely; broad filters that block traversal sequences but leave sibling-prefix comparison in place will not fully close the gap.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected code implements sandbox-style containment checks for the file-system tools of AI-Infra-Guard's skill-scan and mcp-scan components. In skill-scan, dir_tree() in skill_scan/tools/dir/dir_actions.py, write_file() in skill_scan/tools/file/write_file.py, and grep() in skill_scan/tools/grep/grep_actions.py all validated that a resolved target path stayed inside the allowed root by calling a string startswith check (for example, abs_path.startswith(folder)). This is the classic CWE-22 path traversal root-cause pattern: string-prefix containment is not path containment, so a path such as <root>_evil/... or a traversal sequence that normalizes outside the root passes the guard, and the same flaw was present in mcp-scan/mcp_scan/tools/file/write_file.py. The upstream patch (commit ac0384edc9dbea3b226edefcf50613bd8509134f, PR #539) replaces the prefix test with canonical resolution and boundary comparison, using os.path.realpath on both the target directory and the allowed folder and then verifying os.path.commonpath([directory, folder]) == folder, which correctly rejects sibling prefixes and resolves symbolic links before the check. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:tencent:ai-infra-guard:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* records the affected product family, and the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P) together with the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L) confirm that the attack is local, requires low privileges and user interaction, and yields only low confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact on the scanner host itself.
