Network-reachable action needing only entry-editor auth (PR:L, AC:L); XXE reads files outside the app context (S:C, C:H) with no write or availability impact (I:N/A:N).

Improper Restriction of XML External Entity Reference in Apache Roller 6.1.5 allows a user with entry-editing rights on a weblog to cause the server to parse an attacker-influenced trackback response with an XML parser that does not disable external entity resolution, leading to disclosure of files readable by the Roller process. The Trackback control is hidden in the standard UI, but its action remains directly reachable, and no non-default server configuration is required. Users are recommended to upgrade to Apache Roller 6.1.6 or later, which removes the outbound trackback response parser.

AnalysisAI
XML external entity (XXE) injection in Apache Roller 6.1.5 lets an authenticated user who holds entry-editing rights on any weblog force the server to fetch and parse an attacker-influenced trackback response with an XML parser that resolves external entities, disclosing files readable by the Roller process account. The Trackback control is hidden in the standard UI, but its Struts2 action remains directly reachable over HTTP and no non-default server configuration is required, so the practical prerequisite is a valid low-privileged account plus a host the attacker controls to serve the malicious trackback XML (CVSS 3.1 7.7 High, AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N, scope change reflecting reads outside the application's own data). …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires an authenticated account holding entry-editing rights on at least one weblog (PR:L); no admin rights and no non-default server configuration are needed. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N = 7.7 High) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity XXE requiring only weblog entry-editing privileges (PR:L), with a scope change (S:C) reflecting that the XML parser reads files outside the application's own data (files readable by the Roller OS process) and high confidentiality impact with no integrity or availability effect. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Apache Roller 6.1.6 or later, which removes the outbound trackback response parser entirely (the Trackback class and the EntryEdit.trackback() action with its trackbackUrl parameter are deleted in upstream PR 163); if an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply that PR or its commit as a backport since the fix is a code change rather than a configuration toggle and there is no built-in setting that disables the vulnerable parser. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, identify all instances of Apache Roller 6.1.5 and apply the vendor-released patch to version 6.1.6; if immediate patching is not possible, disable or restrict access to the Trackback Struts2 action and monitor for anomalous outbound XML parsing requests. …
