| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an account with permission to create or update an EventSubscription in OpenMetadata (through 2.0.2); the attacker sets a WEBHOOK destination endpoint to an internal or loopback address (e.g., http://127.0.0.1 or the cloud metadata IP 169.254.169.254), which URLValidator.validateURL fails to reject because it does not resolve DNS hostnames or validate internal/private addresses. Exploitation works on default configurations of the webhook/EventSubscription feature and requires no user interaction, but is LIMITED by PR:H - the requester must already hold the privileged EventSubscription management capability - and the leak is blind (only HTTP status codes are returned, not response bodies), constraining it to internal service and cloud-metadata probing rather than direct data exfiltration. |
| Impact | This is a blind SSRF (CWE-918) that carries a modest CVSS 4.0 base of 5.1, and the score is honest rather than inflated: the vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N with VC:L/SC:L reflects that impact is limited to blind internal probing (HTTP status codes returned), not data theft or code execution, and that exploitation requires PR:H - the actor must already hold permission to create or update an EventSubscription, an administrative/privileged capability. Signals partially align and partially temper each other: a public POC exists (a gist by naif-alfardan) and a vendor patch is available, and VulnCheck has published an advisory, so this is a real, reproducible issue rather than a theoretical one. However, it is NOT in CISA KEV and no EPSS score was provided, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. The PR:H gate is the dominant risk-limiting factor: the attacker is an authenticated, already-trusted user, which shifts this toward an insider/post-compromise pivot (reaching cloud metadata endpoints like 169.254.169.254 or internal services) rather than an unauthenticated internet-facing break-in. Net: a legitimate, patch-now-if-exposed issue but a moderate priority, not a critical one. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated user (or a compromised account) with rights to manage EventSubscriptions creates or PATCHes a webhook destination pointing at an internal address such as http://127.0.0.1 or the cloud metadata endpoint 169.254.169.254; because URLValidator.validateURL fails to resolve DNS and block internal addresses, the OpenMetadata server issues the request and returns HTTP status codes that let the attacker map internal services and probe cloud metadata. A public proof-of-concept exists (VulnCheck-referenced gist), lowering the effort to reproduce. Because CVSS shows AV:N/AC:L but PR:H, the attack is network-reachable and low-complexity yet requires the EventSubscription privilege. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Blind server-side request forgery in OpenMetadata through 2.0.2 allows an authenticated user holding permission to create or update an EventSubscription to point a WEBHOOK destination at internal hosts, loopback addresses, or the cloud metadata endpoint 169.254.169.254, because URLValidator.validateURL neither resolves DNS hostnames nor rejects internal/private addresses. Only the resulting HTTP status code is returned to the caller, so the leak is blind internal probing rather than response-body exfiltration or code execution. Publicly available exploit code exists (a proof-of-concept gist is linked from the vendor advisory) and the assessed CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.1; no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) is referenced in the available intelligence.
RemediationAI
Vendor patch status is “Upstream fix available (commit); released patched version not independently confirmed,” so upgrade to a build that contains commit 8f44482ac89bad9227df5b7f79beca2efe50c05f (https://github.com/open-metadata/OpenMetadata/commit/8f44482ac89bad9227df5b7f79beca2efe50c05f) rather than assuming a specific tag; verify the commit is present in the image or JAR you deploy. If you cannot patch immediately, the most effective compensating control is to stop the server from reaching sensitive targets: enforce egress filtering or an outbound proxy allowlist on the OpenMetadata host so 169.254.169.254/link-local, loopback, and RFC1918 ranges are unreachable, accepting that this can break legitimate webhook deliveries to internal or dynamically resolved endpoints unless you allowlist them explicitly. On cloud instances, require IMDSv2 and set the metadata hop limit to 1, which blocks the simple GET-based metadata fetch this SSRF aims at but requires an instance-level configuration change and a restart. If event notifications are not operationally required, disable the WEBHOOK destination type or the EventSubscription feature entirely - the trade-off is loss of alerting and workflow notifications - and otherwise restrict the create/update EventSubscription capability (the CVSS 4.0 PR:H prerequisite) to the smallest possible set of trusted administrators. Note that the connect/read timeouts added in the patch only blunt the blind timing signal and should not be treated as a fix for the underlying validation gap.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is CWE-918 (server-side request forgery) in openmetadata-service, where URLValidator.java (lines 34-47 of the 2.0.2-release branch) performs string- or pattern-based checks on user-supplied webhook endpoints but does not resolve the supplied hostname to an IP address nor reject internal, loopback, link-local, or RFC1918 destinations. Because EventSubscription WEBOOK destinations are attacker-controlled through the create and update APIs, the OpenMetadata server acts as the request proxy, and the JAX-RS/Jersey client used by WebhookSinkProvider returns the upstream HTTP status to the caller, giving a blind oracle for internal service and cloud metadata probing. The upstream patch commit 8f44482ac89bad9227df5b7f79beca2efe50c05f moves validation into EventSubscriptionRepository so the policy runs both on entity creation and on the persistence/update (PATCH) path, with new integration tests asserting a 400 InvalidRequestException for loopback endpoints supplied via POST and via PATCH. The same commit replaces the raw ClientBuilder client in WebhookSinkProvider with SubscriptionUtil.getClient configured with a 30-second connect timeout and a 120-second read timeout, which narrows but does not eliminate timing-based blind inference.

DescriptionCVE.org
OpenMetadata through 2.0.2 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability in the URLValidator.validateURL function that fails to properly resolve DNS hostnames and validate internal addresses. Users permitted to create or update EventSubscription can set webhook destinations to internal hosts, allowing the server to send requests to private networks and cloud metadata endpoints while returning HTTP status codes that enable blind SSRF probing.
