MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Credential Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires ALL of: (1) the LLM_PARSING feature explicitly enabled on the server (likely non-default); (2) an authenticated account (PR:L); (3) write permission to the target trip instance to reach the AI-assisted import path; and (4) a deployment where the server can reach internal/link-local targets (e.g. cloud metadata at 169.254.169.254). The attacker sets llm_base_url through the settings API, which is consumed by openai-compatible.client.ts, anthropic.client.ts, and ollama-format.client.ts without the SSRF guard. Limiting factors: exploitation is impossible if LLM parsing is disabled, if the attacker lacks trip write access, or if network egress/metadata endpoints are firewalled; impact is a non-blind SSRF returning only upstream error text, not arbitrary full response bodies. |
| Impact | This is a credible, well-substantiated SSRF (CWE-918) with all key signals aligning, though it is not an emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N, base 8.1) reflects network reach and low complexity but correctly requires privileges (PR:L) - an authenticated user with write access to a trip instance. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided, so per precision rules the status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - this is targeted/manual-effort territory rather than mass-exploitable. The most impactful signal is that this is a NON-blind SSRF: upstream error-response text is echoed back in parsing warnings, materially raising real confidentiality risk (internal service discovery, link-local cloud metadata at 169.254.169.254, potential credential leakage) compared to a blind variant. The I:H (integrity) rating rests on a speculative downstream chain - using leaked metadata credentials to later modify protected cloud resources - which is not directly demonstrated by the vulnerability itself; I regard I:H as somewhat inflated. Exploitation is further gated by the LLM_PARSING feature being enabled (likely non-default) and by trip-instance write permission, so real-world exposure is narrower than the 8.1 headline suggests. Net: a genuine, verifiable priority for any deployment that enables LLM parsing and runs in a cloud environment with reachable metadata endpoints, but bounded by authentication and feature-flag prerequisites. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated TREK user with write access to a trip, on an instance where the LLM_PARSING feature is enabled, sets a malicious llm_base_url (e.g. http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/iam/security-credentials/) via the settings API. They then trigger AI-assisted trip import, causing the server to issue an outbound request to that destination; because the SSRF guard is not applied, and because upstream error text is surfaced in parsing warnings, the attacker reads internal service responses and cloud metadata. No public POC was provided. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 24, 2026
Server-side request forgery in TREK before 3.3.0 allows an authenticated user (CVSS PR:L) to persist an attacker-controlled llm_base_url through the settings API whenever the LLM_PARSING feature is enabled, and that stored URL is later fetched by the server with no SSRF guard. Reaching the vulnerable path additionally requires write permission on the target trip instance, after which the server can be pointed at internal services or link-local cloud metadata endpoints (for example 169.254.169.254), with upstream error text reflected back in parsing warnings, creating a credible path to infrastructure credential disclosure and, per the vendor's assessment, modification of protected cloud resources. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and independent assessment rates the impact as high confidentiality but only low integrity (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N), so exploitation is bounded by feature configuration, trip permissions, and network egress controls.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade TREK to version 3.3.0 or later from https://github.com/liketrek/TREK/releases/tag/v3.3.0, which is the release containing the fix described in GHSA-fmq9-ggh3-647p (https://github.com/liketrek/TREK/security/advisories/GHSA-fmq9-ggh3-647p); the referenced commit 19064b39176660f3be3a2df198c87949504046e2 and PR #1520 (https://github.com/liketrek/TREK/pull/1520) are the upstream fix artifacts. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, disable the LLM_PARSING feature entirely - this removes the vulnerable AI-assisted import path and is the single highest-value compensating control, at the cost of losing AI trip parsing functionality. Additionally, restrict trip write permission to trusted users so untrusted or low-privilege accounts cannot reach the import path, and constrain outbound network egress from the TREK server so it cannot reach private RFC1918 ranges, loopback, or the link-local metadata address 169.254.169.254. On cloud hosts, enforce instance metadata protections (for example requiring IMDSv2 and lowering the hop limit) or apply an egress firewall rule blocking link-local metadata, since blocking it can break legitimate instance-metadata-dependent tooling. Monitor settings-API writes to llm_base_url and treat any unexpected internal or link-local value as a compromise indicator and rotate any credentials reachable from the TREK host.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery): TREK treats a user-supplied configuration value, llm_base_url, as a trusted LLM API endpoint. When the optional LLM_PARSING feature is enabled, an authenticated user can write that value via the settings API, and the AI-assisted trip import path subsequently dereferences it in server/src/nest/llm-parse/clients/openai-compatible.client.ts, server/src/nest/llm-parse/clients/anthropic.client.ts, and server/src/nest/llm-parse/router/ollama-format.client.ts. Those clients issue outbound HTTP requests without applying the application's server-side request forgery guard, meaning no allowlist or private/link-local address filtering is enforced before the request is made. Because the response is partially surfaced - upstream error text can appear in parsing warnings - this is a semi-blind rather than fully blind SSRF, but it does not return arbitrary full response bodies, which caps the exfiltration surface somewhat. The affected CPE cpe:2.3:a:mauriceboe:trek:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the self-hosted TREK application (also distributed via Helm charts), and the fix targeted in the v3.3.0 release validates the LLM endpoint configuration against the SSRF guard. The realistic target set is internal network services reachable from the TREK server and, in cloud deployments, link-local instance metadata services that may yield IAM credentials.

2DescriptionCVE.org
TREK is a collaborative travel planner. Prior to 3.3.0, TREK allows an authenticated user to store an attacker-controlled llm_base_url through the settings API when the LLM_PARSING feature is enabled. Write permission to the target trip instance is required to trigger the vulnerable AI-assisted import path. The value is consumed by the clients in server/src/nest/llm-parse/clients/openai-compatible.client.ts, server/src/nest/llm-parse/clients/anthropic.client.ts, and server/src/nest/llm-parse/router/ollama-format.client.ts without applying the server-side request forgery guard. Triggering AI-assisted trip parsing causes the server to request the supplied destination, and upstream error response text can be returned in parsing warnings. This permits internal service discovery and access to link-local cloud metadata, with possible disclosure of infrastructure credentials and subsequent modification of protected cloud resources. This issue is fixed in version 3.3.0.
Technical POC Analysis
CWE-918 (SSRF), caused by a missing server-side validation step rather than a buggy library.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
TREK versions before 3.3.0 that have LLM_PARSING enabled and authenticated users with write access to trip instances are exposed to a server-side request forgery issue that can redirect server requests to internal services and cloud metadata endpoints. Successful exploitation could disclose cloud infrastructure credentials and, per the vendor, allow modification of protected cloud resources. Leadership should treat this as a high-priority cloud security risk because compromise could extend beyond the TREK application into the organization's cloud control plane.
Disable or restrict LLM_PARSING; enforce least privilege on trip write permissions; block outbound server egress to 169.254.169.254, link-local, and internal RFC1918 ranges; allowlist approved LLM endpoints; monitor settings API changes to llm_base_url; rotate cloud credentials if exposure is suspected.
