Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target application (1) uses node-xhtml-purifier at a version below 0.4.3, (2) passes attacker-controlled HTML through it for sanitization, and (3) renders the purified output in a browser. The attacker must be able to inject a double-quote character into any allowed attribute value (class, style, title, alt, src, or href); the resulting breakout attaches an event handler (e.g., onmouseover, onerror). The primary limiting factor is UI:R - the victim must render and, for handlers like onmouseover, interact with (hover over) the malicious element for the script to fire; onerror-based payloads fire on load. There is no authentication requirement (PR:N), but exploitation is entirely contingent on an application actually adopting this specific niche sanitizer.

Impact

This is a genuine sanitizer bypass but a moderate-priority issue overall. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) reflects a classic stored/reflected XSS: network-reachable, low complexity, no privileges, but requiring user interaction (UI:R) and yielding only partial confidentiality/integrity impact with a scope change (the injected script executes in the victim's browser origin, a different security scope than the sanitizer library). No EPSS score, KEV listing, or SSVC decision data was provided, and no public exploit code was supplied - the diff includes only a unit test, not a weaponized PoC, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The real-world risk is bounded primarily by prevalence: node-xhtml-purifier is an obscure single-maintainer npm library, so despite the CVSS being unauthenticated-network the practical blast radius is small and depends entirely on how many applications actually use this specific sanitizer to render attacker-supplied HTML. The vulnerability class (attribute-injection XSS via unencoded double-quotes) is well understood and the root cause is confirmed by the vendor advisory and the fix commit, so the technical claim is solid; the aggregate exploitation likelihood is low-to-moderate given niche deployment.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An application uses node-xhtml-purifier (<0.4.3) to sanitize user-submitted HTML (e.g., forum posts, comments, profile fields) before rendering it. An attacker submits content where an allowed attribute value contains a double-quote - for example an href or class value like c" onmouseover="alert(1) - which survives sanitization unencoded, breaks out of the quoted attribute, and injects a live event handler that executes JavaScript in the victim's browser when they view or hover over the content. No public exploit code exists, but the technique is trivial and demonstrated by the vendor's own regression test.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 24, 2026

Attribute-injection cross-site scripting in xhtml-purifier (npm package node-xhtml-purifier) before 0.4.3 lets an attacker who can supply HTML to the sanitizer smuggle a JavaScript event handler - for example onmouseover or onerror - past purification so that it executes when the purified output is rendered in a browser. The serializer in XHTMLPurifier.js writes each attribute value straight into a double-quoted attribute without HTML-entity encoding, so a double quote inside any allowed attribute (class, style, title, alt, src, href) terminates the attribute and starts a new one, converting data into markup. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, score 6.1) indicates no authentication requirement but a user-interaction prerequisite, since the victim must render the output and, for handlers like onmouseover, trigger the element; this is a genuine sanitizer bypass but a moderate-priority issue overall, and exploitation is contingent on an application actually passing attacker-controlled HTML through this niche library. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 0.4.3 - upgrade xhtml-purifier to 0.4.3 or later in package.json and regenerate the lockfile so the fixed serializer (commit 21d461ad23e7bc9b3073693d5b51b9b8662044d3) is actually installed; the advisory at https://github.com/cstigler/node-xhtml-purifier/security/advisories/GHSA-j8r4-32c5-33rc accompanies the release. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, treat the sanitizer itself as untrusted output: HTML-entity-encode attribute values a second time after purification, or reject/normalize any double quote inside allowed attribute values before the HTML reaches the purifier, accepting that legitimate values containing quotes (for example a title string) may be mangled and that this is a brittle, easily bypassed stopgap rather than a real fix. Because the failure is in the sanitizer's serialization layer, the more robust compensating control is to replace this niche library with an actively maintained sanitizer such as DOMPurify or sanitize-html for the same rendering path, which carries the migration cost of re-validating the allow-list against your content requirements. No public exploit code was identified, so no additional network-level filtering is warranted beyond normal content-security-policy hardening.

Technical ContextAI · show details

xhtml-purifier is a lightweight Node.js HTML sanitizer that parses raw, untrusted HTML and re-serializes only an allow-listed subset of tags and attributes, acting as a trust boundary between untrusted input and browser rendering. The flaw is a classic output-encoding defect (CWE-79, improper neutralization of input during web page generation) located in the attributeString() method of XHTMLPurifier.js around line 148: sanitization correctly restricts which attributes are permitted, but the subsequent serialization concatenates the raw attribute value into a double-quoted attribute without escaping the ampersand, double quote, or angle brackets. Because the parser's clean value is never re-encoded for the HTML attribute context, a value containing a double quote escapes the quoting and introduces an attacker-chosen attribute, including event handlers, that the sanitizer does not strip because the handler was never a parsed attribute in the first place. The 0.4.3 fix replaces that concatenation with an entity-encoding step that converts '&' (when not already part of an entity), '"', '<' and '>' into &, ", < and > respectively, and the accompanying test asserts that an embedded quote is emitted as " and that no live on* handler appears in the output. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:cstigler:node-xhtml-purifier:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covering the package's releases prior to 0.4.3.

DescriptionCVE.org

xhtml-purifier is a Node.js library to take in raw/unknown/untrusted HTML and output cleaned, purified, trusted HTML. Versions prior to 0.4.3 do not HTML-entity-encode attribute values when serializing its sanitized output. In attributeString() (XHTMLPurifier.js, around line 148) the attribute value is concatenated directly into a double-quoted attribute without encoding. As a result, an attacker-controlled value in any allowed attribute (class, style, title, alt, src, href) can include a double-quote character to break out of the attribute and inject an additional attribute, such as a JavaScript event handler (for example onmouseover or onerror). The injected handler survives sanitization and executes when the output is rendered, which is a sanitizer bypass leading to cross-site scripting. The fix in version 0.4.3 HTML-entity-encodes attribute values before serialization.
