| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Plex Media Server account (PR:L) - any valid user, including a low-trust invited/shared-library user, can reach the vulnerable '/video/:/transcode/universal' endpoint. Exploitation is possible remotely over the network with low complexity by supplying an attacker-controlled internal or external address in the transcode path parameter. Limiting factors: a valid authenticated session is mandatory (no unauthenticated path), the server must be running a version before 1.43.3.10861, and real impact depends on network exposure - an internet-facing or flat-network Plex server yields far more internal reachability than a well-segmented one. No user interaction beyond the attacker's own authenticated request is needed. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, not critical, issue. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N = 4.3) describes a network-reachable but authenticated (PR:L) SSRF with only low confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact - consistent with CWE-918. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or explicit POC flag was provided in the input, so there is no signal of active exploitation. The one notable signal is the reference to a third-party writeup titled 'plex2shell' (zmain.info), whose name implies a documented exploitation chain, but this is a blog analysis rather than a confirmed weaponized exploit or CISA KEV entry. Contrast the signals: the CVSS is deliberately conservative (C:L, S:U) because base scoring does not credit the fact that SSRF can pivot into an internal network, so real-world impact in a poorly segmented deployment could exceed the 4.3 score - internal service enumeration, cloud metadata access, or chaining toward further compromise. Net: a real but authentication-gated priority, worth patching promptly on internet-exposed or shared Plex servers, but not an emergency remote-unauthenticated flaw. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with any valid Plex account (or a low-trust shared-library user) sends a crafted request to the '/video/:/transcode/universal' endpoint with a path parameter pointing at an internal address, causing the server to fetch it and return or leak the response. This enables internal network probing, access to internal-only services, or cloud metadata endpoints; a third-party 'plex2shell' writeup suggests the technique has been publicly documented as part of a larger chain. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026
Server-side request forgery in Plex Media Server before 1.43.3.10861 allows any authenticated user - including a low-trust account invited only to a shared library - to coerce the server into issuing HTTP requests to arbitrary internal or external addresses through the path parameter of the '/video/:/transcode/universal' endpoint. The attacker gains no code execution and the assessed impact is confidentiality-only and limited (CVSS 4.3, C:L/I:N/A:N), but the flaw is a useful internal-network reconnaissance and pivot primitive on internet-facing or flat-network deployments. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; exploitation requires a valid authenticated session and a server running a version prior to 1.43.3.10861.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Plex Media Server to 1.43.3.10861 or later - this is the primary and complete fix, documented in the Plex announcement thread at https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-media-server/30447/711 and the CVE record at https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-96655. Until every server is upgraded, apply compensating controls that shrink the attack surface: audit and prune shared-library invitations and Plex Home users, since exploitation requires an authenticated account and a single low-trust guest is sufficient (trade-off: reduces legitimate sharing); apply outbound firewall/egress rules on the Plex host that deny traffic to RFC1918, loopback, link-local, and cloud metadata ranges (169.254.169.254) while permitting Plex's legitimate internet metadata and relay traffic (trade-off: overly broad egress blocking breaks artwork, subtitle, and metadata fetching, and requires maintaining an allow-list); and place the Plex server in a segmented VLAN or container network that cannot reach management interfaces, hypervisor APIs, or internal administrative web services (trade-off: may break remote-access and DLNA/local discovery scenarios). Disable remote access / port forwarding if the server is not intentionally internet-facing.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a classic server-side request forgery (CWE-918) located in Plex Media Server's transcoding subsystem. The '/video/:/transcode/universal' endpoint accepts a caller-supplied path/URL parameter so the media server can locate and stream content for transcoding; because that parameter is not constrained by a scheme/host allow-list or blocked from resolving to internal (RFC1918, loopback, link-local) or cloud-metadata addresses, the Plex process's own HTTP client will fetch whatever address the caller specifies. The request originates from the server, not the client, so it bypasses client-side network restrictions and can reach services that trust the Plex host - internal admin panels, other media/database services, or instance metadata endpoints. The CPE string cpe:2.3:a:plex:media_server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms the affected component is the Plex media server application itself across all versions prior to the fixed release. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) shows remote, low-complexity exploitation that still requires a valid authenticated principal, with the resulting impact confined to limited information exposure rather than integrity or availability loss.
