| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an attacker able to invoke the MCP server's Jira update_issue tool (a permitted MCP caller) against a deployment of sooperset/mcp-atlassian prior to 0.22.0 that is configured with operator/shared Atlassian credentials. The caller must control the attachments argument, which is converted to local file paths and passed to upload_attachment without workspace confinement. Limiting factors: exploitation is bounded to files readable by the MCP server process and yields confidentiality impact only (arbitrary local file read/exfiltration, no write or code execution via this flaw); it is not exploitable against a properly isolated caller lacking Jira write/update tool access. Despite the vendor's PR:N vector, realistic exploitation depends on the shared-credential MCP deployment model rather than fully anonymous access. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but access-gated confidentiality issue, not a widespread-exploitation priority. The vendor CVSS 8.6 rests on PR:N and S:C, but that overstates realistic risk: the description and the PR#1448 code path (jira update_issue → attachments → upload_attachment → file_path) show the attacker must be a permitted MCP caller with rights to invoke Jira update_issue against a server holding operator Atlassian credentials, so effective privilege is PR:L (permitted caller / shared-credential deployment), consistent with the sibling upload_attachment file-read CVEs in the same batch (CVE-2026-77260, CVE-2026-77270). The scope change (S:C) is defensible as a confused-deputy pattern where the server exfiltrates its own host's files, but S:U is equally arguable. Impact is confidentiality-only (C:H, I:N, A:N) - arbitrary local file read, no code execution on its own (the RCE-via-CWD-overwrite concern is a separate flaw, GHSA-6vmq, patched in the same PR). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV entry, and no public POC are present in the input, so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Net: a real least-privilege/tenant-isolation weakness worth patching in any shared-credential MCP deployment, but far from a mass-exploitation, high-EPSS event given the niche product footprint and the required caller access. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already has authorized access to invoke the MCP server's Jira update_issue tool supplies a file path such as /etc/passwd or a credentials/config file in the attachments argument. The server, running with operator Atlassian credentials, reads that arbitrary local file and uploads it as an attachment to a Jira issue, from which the attacker retrieves the contents - a confused-deputy exfiltration. No public exploit code is identified, though the fixing PR#1448 diff and advisory precisely trace the vulnerable path. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026
Arbitrary local file read leading to data exfiltration affects sooperset's MCP Atlassian server (mcp-atlassian) prior to 0.22.0, where the Jira update_issue tool converts a caller-supplied attachments argument into local filesystem paths and passes them to the attachment upload implementation without any workspace confinement. A caller able to invoke the update_issue tool can therefore use the server as a confused deputy, reading arbitrary files (e.g. credentials, config, SSH keys) readable by the server process and attaching their contents to a Jira issue the caller controls, with confidentiality impact only - no write or code execution through this flaw. Exploitation is access-gated: the vendor rates it AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N (8.6), while our independent assessment scores it PR:L/S:U, since a permitted MCP caller and a shared-credential deployment are realistic prerequisites; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to mcp-atlassian 0.22.0, which confines upload sources to the workspace via validate_safe_path() and also bundles SSRF redirect/pinning hardening, an enforced CQL space allowlist and a guard against downloads into the working-directory root; the fix is documented in GHSA-2xj6-xx86-cwwc (https://github.com/sooperset/mcp-atlassian/security/advisories/GHSA-2xj6-xx86-cwwc) and implemented in PR #1448 / commit b041733. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply layered compensating controls and accept their trade-offs: restructure credentials so the MCP server does not run with shared operator tokens, issuing per-caller Atlassian credentials so an exploited read is limited to that caller's own Jira scope (reduces blast radius but requires identity provisioning); restrict who can reach the MCP endpoint by binding only to localhost/stdio or requiring authentication on any HTTP transport, since the tool becomes unreachable to unauthorized callers (may break remote or multi-user integrations); run the server as a dedicated unprivileged user inside a container with a minimal, read-only filesystem and no mounted secrets, which shrinks the set of files worth exfiltrating (may break tools that legitimately need file access); and, as a blunt last resort, disable or firewall the jira update_issue attachment-upload path until patched (breaks legitimate attachment workflows). Pair any of these with monitoring for unusual attachment uploads to Jira issues and for server-process reads of sensitive paths outside the expected workspace.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MCP Atlassian is a Python Model Context Protocol server exposing Confluence and Jira tools to MCP clients (typically over stdio or a local HTTP/SSE transport). The flaw is a classic CWE-22 path traversal / missing input validation: the jira update_issue entry point accepts an 'attachments' argument, resolves each element to a local file path, and forwards it to upload_attachment without ever verifying that the resolved path stays inside a designated workspace. Because the server runs with its own filesystem privileges and the upload call succeeds against the operator's Jira credentials, the caller's path strings map directly onto arbitrary reads - the advisory traces the flow across update_issue, attachments, upload_attachment and file_path. The upstream fix (PR #1448, commit b041733, released as v0.22.0) routes the Confluence-side upload through a validate_safe_path() helper that rejects traversal and absolute paths escaping the working directory, and the same patch set adds defense-in-depth hardening: SSRF redirect hooks and DNS pinning on the Confluence session, mandatory ANDing of the configured CQL space allowlist so a caller cannot replace it, and a refusal to write downloaded attachments directly into the working-directory root (which would otherwise allow overwriting an importable module). The CPE cpe:2.3:a:sooperset:mcp-atlassian:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with an unbounded version wildcard confirms the advisory covers all releases before 0.22.0. Note the vendor vector's Scope:Changed (S:C) implies the vulnerable component affects resources beyond its own security authority, an assumption our assessment declines, treating the impact as confined (S:U) and requiring an authorized MCP caller (PR:L).

2DescriptionCVE.org
MCP Atlassian is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Atlassian products (Confluence and Jira). Prior to 0.22.0, the Jira update_issue attachments argument is converted into local paths and routed to the attachment upload implementation without workspace validation. A caller can make the MCP server read arbitrary local files and attach them to a Jira issue, using the server as a confused deputy to exfiltrate the contents. The advisory traces the vulnerable input and processing flow through jira update_issue, attachments, upload_attachment, and file_path, which identify the affected entry points, controls, and code paths. This issue is fixed in version 0.22.0.

Executive ViewAI
MCP Atlassian server (mcp-atlassian) prior to 0.22.0 can be abused by a permitted MCP caller to read arbitrary files from the server host and attach their contents to a Jira issue, exposing credentials, configuration, and SSH keys. Because no vendor patch is available and the flaw requires only access to the update_issue tool, organizations using shared MCP credentials or broad tool permissions face elevated risk of sensitive data exfiltration. Leadership should prioritize immediate access restrictions and host isolation while tracking vendor remediation.
No vendor-released patch identified; restrict MCP caller permissions, disable or sandbox the Jira update_issue attachment upload functionality, run the server with least privilege and no access to sensitive filesystem paths, isolate the host/container, monitor and alert on unexpected Jira attachments, and rotate credentials or SSH keys if exposure is suspected.
