Exploitation Conditions

Requires a reachable changedetection.io instance exposing the Add Watch UI Preview endpoint (/snapshot in the add_watch_ui blueprint). The endpoint is protected only by login_optionally_required, so it is unauthenticated on default installs where no password is set, and authenticated where an operator has configured one. The url argument is validated only to start with http:// or https:// - no blocklist for loopback, RFC1918, link-local (169.254.169.254 cloud metadata), or DNS-rebinding targets - so any such URL is fetched server-side via the configured browser fetcher. Limiting factors: the instance must be network-reachable by the attacker, a working Playwright/sockpuppet fetcher backend must be running (else 502), and impact is bounded to what the returned screenshot/rendered data reveals about internal targets.

Impact

This is a moderate, credible risk rather than a critical one. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) with E:P describes a remotely reachable, low-complexity SSRF requiring no user interaction and - per the vendor vector - no privileges, with impacts capped at VC:L/VI:L/VA:L and no scope change (SC/SI/SA:N). The source code corroborates the vector: the /snapshot endpoint is guarded only by login_optionally_required, so on default changedetection.io deployments (which ship without a password until one is configured) the endpoint is effectively unauthenticated, supporting PR:N; where auth IS set, exploitation drops to authenticated. POC/exploit code is publicly available (GitHub herantong/cve and VulDB CTI), and E:P (Proof-of-Concept) in the vector matches that, but this is exploit availability, NOT active exploitation - there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score supplied, so treat exploit maturity as 'public code exists, no confirmed in-the-wild use.' The URL scheme check only enforces http/https and does not block internal/loopback/link-local/cloud-metadata targets, which is the crux of the SSRF. Net: prioritize patching for any internet-exposed or multi-tenant instance, but the limited L/L/L impact and reliance on the instance being reachable keep this below the top tier.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker reaches an exposed changedetection.io instance and issues a GET to the Add-Watch preview endpoint (/snapshot?url=...) supplying an internal target such as http://169.254.169.254/ or an internal service address. The server-side browser fetcher connects to that target and returns a screenshot/rendered data, letting the attacker probe internal hosts, cloud metadata, or intranet services from the server's network position. Public exploit code for this SSRF exists, lowering the barrier to weaponization.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026

Server-side request forgery in changedetection.io's Add Watch preview endpoint (/add_watch_ui/snapshot) allows remote attackers to force the server's browser fetcher to request attacker-chosen http(s) URLs, including loopback services, RFC1918 hosts, and the 169.254.169.254 cloud metadata address, because the url argument is validated only for an http:// or https:// prefix. The route is wrapped in login_optionally_required, so it can be reached unauthenticated on default installs that have no password set and requires credentials only where an operator has configured one; publicly available exploit code exists, and it is not confirmed as actively exploited (no CISA KEV entry). This is a moderate, credible risk rather than a critical one, with impact bounded to what the returned screenshot and rendered page data expose about internal targets; the vendor-released fix is version 0.60.1 (commit 71d332d5a0d3da2a0fe89a392413bf4b7d27c84e).

RemediationAI

Upgrade changedetection.io to 0.60.1, which is the vendor-released patch for this issue (release: https://github.com/dgtlmoon/changedetection.io/releases/tag/0.60.1; commit: https://github.com/dgtlmoon/changedetection.io/commit/71d332d5a0d3da2a0fe89a392413bf4b7d27c84e); if running from source, deploy a revision at or after that commit. Until the upgrade is applied, the most effective compensating control is to enforce authentication, since the endpoint is guarded only by login_optionally_required - configuring an application password makes the preview route require credentials, at the cost of forcing every UI/API client to authenticate and breaking any anonymous integrations. Reduce exposure by placing the instance behind a reverse proxy or firewall that blocks external access to the Add Watch UI snapshot path (for example restricting /add_watch_ui/snapshot to trusted administrative source IPs), accepting that this disables the live JS preview/visual-selector feature for legitimate users. Complement this with egress filtering on the host/container that denies outbound requests to loopback, RFC1918 ranges, and the 169.254.169.254 metadata endpoint, which is a generic but durable backstop for SSRF and may need allowlists for any internal sites that are intentionally monitored; note that hosts without a functioning Playwright/sockpuppet fetcher will return 502 on the preview call and therefore cannot complete the attack, but that should not be treated as a fix. Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic CWE-918 server-side request forgery introduced by a new Flask blueprint, changedetectionio/blueprint/add_watch_ui/__init__.py, whose /snapshot view (add_watch_ui_snapshot) takes a url query parameter and hands it to the application's configured fetcher backend. Internally it calls acquire_browser_for_fetcher and browsersteps_live_ui inside run_async_in_browser_loop to navigate to the supplied URL with Playwright/CloakBrowser/sockpuppet, capture a screenshot, XPath element data, and the rendered HTML, then parks that data in a temporary watch directory. The only validation applied is a check that the string begins with 'http://' or 'https://', so there is no allowlist and no blocklist for loopback, RFC1918 ranges, link-local addresses, or DNS-rebinding hostnames, and the request is issued from the server's network position with whatever privileges the container/service account holds. Access control is limited to the login_optionally_required decorator, which enforces authentication only when the operator has actually configured a password, leaving default installs exposed to remote, unauthenticated callers. The CVE is scored 6.9 under CVSS 4.0 (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:P), indicating network-reachable, no-privilege, no-interaction exploitation with proven (proof-of-concept) exploit maturity and low confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact confined to the vulnerable system itself; our independent assessment agrees on network reachability and no required privileges using the CVSS 3.1 equivalent AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L. The published patch commit bundles the new blueprint file together with a favicon-handling change in changedetectionio/api/Watch.py that aborts requests when the returned MIME type looks like text, indicating the maintainer tightened both the preview path and adjacent fetch responses.
