Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to be an authenticated MISP user who actively opens or navigates to an attacker-crafted URL (UI:A/UI:R) targeting the event REST-search export confirmation form (eventRestSearchExportConfirmationForm.ctp). The attacker needs no MISP account or prior access. The instance must run the Default or UiBeta theme - the Overmind theme is NOT vulnerable to this sink because its copy of the form already passes the value through an escaped data attribute. Only unpatched builds (before commit ad4ff238d) are affected. The limiting factors are: mandatory victim interaction, the victim being logged in, and the non-Overmind theme requirement.

Impact

This is a genuine but bounded, low-to-medium priority issue. The CVSS 4.0 base of 5.1 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L) correctly captures a reflected XSS: network-reachable and low-complexity, but critically dependent on victim interaction (UI:A/UI:R) - the attacker must lure an already-authenticated MISP user into clicking a crafted URL. No EPSS score, KEV listing, POC, or SSVC decision data was provided, so there is no evidence of active or automatable exploitation; per the precision rules this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signal set is therefore weak-but-consistent: no data conflicts, but also no amplifiers. The impact metrics are deliberately low (VC:L/VI:L) because the vulnerable component's own confidentiality/integrity are not compromised - the damage is confined to the victim's browser session. The single most important limiting factor is the authenticated-victim + user-interaction requirement, which keeps real-world risk modest despite the network vector. Note the vendor 4.0 score of 5.1 slightly under-weights the session-context boundary crossing; an equivalent CVSS 3.1 rating would land near 6.1 (S:C) since the payload executes across the session/application trust boundary. Patch availability (single confirmed vendor commit) makes remediation trivial and further lowers effective risk.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker crafts a URL to the MISP event REST-search export confirmation form with an event ID list parameter containing a single-quote plus JavaScript payload, then phishes an authenticated MISP analyst into opening it. Because json_encode() does not escape single quotes by default, the payload breaks out of the single-quoted JS string literal and runs in the victim's session, enabling session hijacking or actions performed as the victim. No public exploit code was identified, but the injection is trivially reproducible from the described sink and the vendor commit diff.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026

MISP's event REST search export confirmation form reflects a URL-supplied event ID list into a single-quoted JavaScript string without escaping single quotes, allowing arbitrary JavaScript execution in an authenticated victim's browser. The attacker needs no MISP account, but exploitation requires the victim to be logged in and to open a crafted URL; only unpatched builds using the Default or UiBeta theme are affected, while the Overmind theme's form already uses an escaped data attribute and is not vulnerable to this sink. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the impact is bounded to the victim's web session rather than the MISP server itself.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor fix by upgrading MISP to a build that includes commit ad4ff238d (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/ad4ff238d); because the input provides a commit rather than a tagged version, confirm from the vendor release information whether your specific MISP build contains it. Until then, switch affected instances to the Overmind theme as a temporary compensating control because that theme's form does not use the vulnerable single-quoted JavaScript string sink; the trade-off is that Overmind may alter the admin UI/UX and this control only addresses this specific sink. If theme switching is not possible, restrict or temporarily disable the event REST search export confirmation workflow for untrusted URLs and instruct authenticated users not to open crafted export-confirmation links; this reduces exposure but can break legitimate export operations and relies on user behavior. Patch available per vendor.

Technical ContextAI · show details

CWE-79 reflected XSS arises because app/View/Events/ajax/eventRestSearchExportConfirmationForm.ctp interpolates json_encode($idList) into a single-quoted JavaScript string. PHP json_encode() by default escapes double quotes and backslashes but does not escape single quotes unless flags such as JSON_HEX_APOS, JSON_HEX_QUOT, JSON_HEX_TAG, and JSON_HEX_AMP are present, so a URL-supplied event ID list containing a single quote can break out of the literal. The vendor fix in commit ad4ff238d adds JSON_HEX_TAG | JSON_HEX_APOS | JSON_HEX_QUOT | JSON_HEX_AMP. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* nominally covers MISP broadly, but practical exploitability depends on an unpatched build and the Default or UiBeta theme; the Overmind theme's copy of the form passes the value through an escaped data attribute and is not affected by this specific sink. The independent assessment maps the issue to CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, indicating network reachability, no privileges required, mandatory user interaction, and limited confidentiality/integrity impact with scope change.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the event REST search export confirmation form. The view template app/View/Events/ajax/eventRestSearchExportConfirmationForm.ctp renders a URL-supplied event ID list into a single-quoted JavaScript string literal using PHP's json_encode() without any hex-encoding flags. By default, json_encode() escapes double quotes and backslashes but does not escape single quotes. Because the JavaScript string is delimited by single quotes, an attacker can inject a single-quote character to terminate the string literal and execute arbitrary JavaScript in the victim's browser session.

The vulnerability affects the Default and UiBeta themes, both of which render this view. The Overmind theme's own copy of the form already passed the value through an escaped data attribute and was not affected by this specific sink.

Preconditions: the victim must be an authenticated MISP user and must actively open or navigate to the attacker-crafted URL. The attacker does not require an account or any prior access to the MISP instance.

Security impact: successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the MISP web application, potentially leading to session hijacking, unauthorized actions performed on behalf of the victim, exfiltration of sensitive data visible in the session, or further client-side attacks. The vulnerable component's own confidentiality, integrity, and availability are not directly compromised; the impact is on the underlying user session.

Attack Technique

Cross-Site Scripting occurs when an application accepts untrusted data and sends it to a web browser without proper validation or encoding.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
