| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated MISP administrator to have an active session and to be induced to submit an attacker-crafted cross-site form or cross-origin request (UI:A) while the vulnerable moduleStatelessExecution action remains listed in the Security component's unlockedActions (pre-v2.5.47 default state). The attacker needs no MISP credentials of their own (PR:N) and can freely choose which workflow module runs and its input/parameters, but the endpoint only executes workflow modules - so impact is confined to actions those modules perform (writing blocklist/warninglist entries), not arbitrary code execution. Limiting factors: victim must be an authenticated admin and must interact with attacker content; instances patched to v2.5.47 (which restores the CSRF check via X-CSRF-Token header) are not affected. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority integrity flaw, not an inflated high-CVSS finding. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:H/VA:N) is internally consistent with a classic CSRF: network-reachable, low complexity, no attacker privileges, but requiring victim interaction (UI:A) and delivering integrity-only impact (VI:H) with no confidentiality or availability loss. The real-world risk is bounded by two factors the raw 6.9 score already reflects: exploitation depends on socially engineering an authenticated MISP administrator into submitting an attacker-controlled cross-origin request, and the damage is limited to writing security-relevant data (blocklist/warninglist entries) rather than code execution or data theft. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input - the flaw was found in an internal CIRCL security review and was not externally reported, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' There are no conflicting signals: description, CVSS vector (PR:N unauthenticated attacker relying on the victim's admin session), and CWE-352 all align. The main caveat is that impact severity depends on how much the target organization relies on MISP blocklist/warninglist integrity for downstream automated decisions. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker hosts a malicious web page containing an auto-submitting cross-site form (or equivalent cross-origin POST) targeting the MISP instance's moduleStatelessExecution endpoint. When an authenticated MISP administrator visits that page while logged in, their browser silently invokes the action, executing an attacker-chosen workflow module - such as one that writes blocklist or warninglist entries - with attacker-supplied input and parameters. No public exploit code exists; the issue was found in an internal CIRCL review, though the mechanism is straightforward given the missing CSRF protection. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026
Cross-site request forgery in MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) before v2.5.47 lets an unauthenticated attacker cause an authenticated administrator's browser to execute arbitrary workflow modules on the victim instance. Because the WorkflowsController's moduleStatelessExecution action was listed in CakePHP's unlockedActions, both the CSRF token check and the form field-hash validation were disabled, so an attacker-crafted cross-site form post submitted by a logged-in admin runs a module's exec() method with attacker-chosen input and parameters - including action modules that write blocklist and warninglist entries. The result is a high-integrity, low-complexity compromise of security-relevant data with no confidentiality or availability impact, and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis; this is a genuine but moderate-priority integrity flaw rather than an inflated high-CVSS finding, requiring the victim admin to be authenticated and induced to submit the crafted request.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to MISP v2.5.47 or later, the vendor-released patch that removes 'moduleStatelessExecution' from $this->Security->unlockedActions and switches the action to a CSRF-token-header-only mode, with the execute_module.ctp dialog updated to send the token via the X-CSRF-Token header (see the upstream commit https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/f05e0d1c2). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply the two-part code change manually: edit WorkflowsController::beforeFilter() to call $this->_csrfTokenHeaderOnly(['moduleStatelessExecution']) instead of appending the action to unlockedActions, and add the 'X-CSRF-Token' header (from window.csrfToken) to the AJAX post in View/Elements/Workflows/execute_module.ctp - applying only the controller change without the view change will cause the module execution dialog to fail with a CSRF error, which is a functional trade-off to expect. Operators who cannot patch the front-end should be aware the endpoint cannot simply be disabled without losing legitimate workflow module testing. Compensating controls are limited because the attack succeeds through the victim's own authenticated session: strongly consider restricting administrator access to trusted networks or IP ranges, avoiding browsing unrelated sites while logged into MISP as an admin, and applying short session idle timeouts - each reduces the window in which a forged cross-site request can ride a valid admin session, though none eliminates the flaw as reliably as the v2.5.47 upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MISP is a PHP/CakePHP threat-intelligence sharing platform, and the flaw lives in the CakePHP Security component's CSRF and form-tampering protection model. CakePHP's unlockedActions list tells the Security component to skip both the CSRF token comparison and the field-hash (form tampering) check for the named action; MISP's app/Controller/WorkflowsController.php previously added 'moduleStatelessExecution' to that list. That action invokes a workflow module's exec() method with caller-supplied input and parameters, meaning the request body directly drives which module runs and with what arguments. The root-cause class is CWE-352 (Cross-Site Request Forgery): the missing token verification means the framework cannot distinguish a legitimate admin-driven module invocation from a cross-origin request forged by a third party. The upstream fix (commit f05e0d1c2) removes the action from unlockedActions and instead uses a CSRF-token-header-only mode, with the execute_module.ctp dialog updated to send the token in the X-CSRF-Token header - this preserves the module dialog's hand-built request object (which could never produce a CakePHP field hash) while restoring CSRF verification. Impact is bounded to what the selectable workflow modules actually do (blocklist/warninglist writes), not arbitrary code execution. CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is version-agnostic and covers all MISP releases before the fix.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP's WorkflowsController exposed the moduleStatelessExecution action in the Security component's unlockedActions list. In CakePHP, listing an action in unlockedActions disables both the CSRF token check and the field hash validation for that action. Because moduleStatelessExecution executes a workflow module's exec() method with caller-supplied input and parameters, the absence of CSRF protection allowed an attacker to craft a cross-site form post (or equivalent cross-origin request) that, when submitted by an authenticated site administrator, would cause the administrator's browser to invoke the action on the MISP instance.
The attacker could select any workflow module to execute, including action modules that write blocklist and warninglist entries, and supply arbitrary input and parameters of their choosing. This constitutes a cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability with high integrity impact on the MISP instance's security-related data.
The vulnerability was identified during an internal security review and was not externally reported. The fix is included in MISP v2.5.47.
