Once the vulnerable proxy-auth config exists, a single spoofed header from any remote unauthenticated host yields full account/admin access; the config prerequisite is environmental, not a base-metric factor.

Mailu is a mail server distributed as a set of Docker images. From Mailu 2.0 until 2024.06.55 and prior to Mailu helm-charts 2.7.3, deployments with PROXY_AUTH_WHITELIST configured but REAL_IP_HEADER unset trusted a client-controlled X-Forwarded-By header for header-based proxy authentication. The proxy_hide_header directive in the nginx template at core/nginx/conf/proxy.conf hid the header from upstream responses but did not overwrite the incoming request value in this configuration. An unauthenticated remote attacker could therefore spoof the trusted proxy identity and bypass authentication. This issue is fixed in Mailu 2024.06.55 and Mailu helm-charts 2.7.3.

AnalysisAI
Authentication bypass in Mailu 2.0 through 2024.06.55 and Mailu helm-charts before 2.7.3 allows unauthenticated remote attackers to spoof the trusted proxy identity via a client-controlled X-Forwarded-By header, bypassing header-based proxy authentication. This affects only deployments with PROXY_AUTH_WHITELIST configured and REAL_IP_HEADER unset; default configurations are not vulnerable. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires a Mailu deployment (2.0 through 2024.06.55, or helm-charts before 2.7.3) that has PROXY_AUTH_WHITELIST configured to enable header-based proxy authentication AND has REAL_IP_HEADER left unset. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The vendor CVSS of 9.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) reflects a full unauthenticated remote authentication bypass, and the vector is internally consistent with CWE-290 (Authentication Bypass by Spoofing): a client-controlled X-Forwarded-By header is trusted for header-based proxy authentication. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to Mailu 2024.06.55 or later, and to Mailu helm-charts 2.7.3 or later, to obtain the vendor-released patch that sets X-Forwarded-By to $remote_addr in the nginx proxy configuration. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, identify all Mailu deployments running versions 2.0 through 2024.06.55 and helm-charts before 2.7.3, and apply the vendor-released patches to Mailu 2024.06.55 and helm-charts 2.7.3; if patching is not immediately possible, disable PROXY_AUTH_WHITELIST or set REAL_IP_HEADER as an interim mitigation. …
