| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to hold an authenticated Mailu domain-manager role (not global admin) over at least one domain. The privileged victim - a global admin or a manager of a different domain - must own a mailbox/account within a domain the attacker manages; this is the specific trigger condition because the vulnerable authorization in access.py (domain_admin and owner decorators covering user_edit, user_password, and token_create) checks only whether the target's domain is in the attacker's managed domains and performs no rank comparison. Limiting factors: the attacker needs valid domain-manager credentials, the target must have a mailbox in the managed domain, and the instance must run a version prior to commit 8577c929b4ade04d3cd4210cf036601abd793556; single-tenant installs with no delegated domain managers are effectively not exposed. |
| Impact | This is an authenticated privilege-escalation flaw (CWE-285, Improper Authorization) rated CVSS 7.2. The provided vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H indicates network reachability and low complexity, but critically requires PR:H - the attacker must already be an authenticated domain manager, which materially lowers real-world risk versus an unauthenticated RCE. Impact is severe once the precondition is met: full takeover of a global admin or higher-privileged domain manager (C:H/I:H/A:H). No EPSS score, CISA KEV entry, or POC flag was supplied in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis; however, the fixing PR #4050 ships regression tests that explicitly demonstrate the vulnerable request paths (an unfixed instance returns HTTP 200 instead of 403 for /user/password/, /user/edit/, and /token/create/ against a global admin), so the exploitation mechanics are fully disclosed and trivially reproducible by anyone with domain-manager access. Net assessment: a genuine high-impact escalation for multi-tenant Mailu deployments where domain managers are semi-trusted, but not an internet-wide mass-exploitation priority because it is gated behind existing privileged credentials and the victim owning a mailbox in the attacker's domain. The one signal worth verifying is whether PR:H is appropriate - a 'domain manager' could arguably be scored PR:L (a lower-tier delegated role), which would raise the base score; this does not change the authenticated nature of the attack. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A semi-trusted domain manager in a multi-tenant Mailu instance notices that a global administrator (or a manager of another domain) owns a mailbox within a domain the attacker manages. The attacker invokes the admin UI's password-reset or API-token-creation function against that mailbox; because authorization checks only the target's domain and omits a rank check, the action succeeds and the attacker captures credentials/token for the higher-privileged account. No public exploit is identified, but the fix PR's regression tests disclose the exact vulnerable endpoints. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026
Mailu, an open-source mail server distributed as a set of Docker images, contains an authorization flaw that lets an authenticated domain manager reset the password of, or mint an API token for, a higher-privileged account that merely owns a mailbox in a domain they manage - including a global admin or a manager of another domain. Because the vulnerable endpoints are the user edit, password reset, and token creation flows, a successful attack grants full control of the victim account and all of its privileges, escalating a limited domain-manager role into global administrative control; the CVSS 3.1 vector is 7.2 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H). Exploitation requires valid domain-manager credentials and the specific condition that a higher-privileged user owns a mailbox inside the attacker's managed domain, so single-tenant installs with no delegated domain managers are effectively not exposed; no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the upstream fix by updating to a Mailu build that includes commit 8577c929b4ade04d3cd4210cf036601abd793556 (delivered via pull request #4050), rebuilding the admin Docker image and redeploying; version-specific tags are not listed in the provided data, so confirm the built image contains the patch rather than assuming a release number. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls are: remove or suspend delegated domain-manager roles on any domain whose mailbox set includes global admins or managers of other domains (this eliminates the trigger condition entirely at the cost of losing delegated administration), and/or restructure accounts so that no global administrator and no cross-domain manager owns a mailbox inside a delegated domain. Additionally restrict reachability of the Mailu admin UI - the WEB_ADMIN prefix route - to trusted management networks via a reverse proxy or firewall rule, and enforce strong, unique credentials and MFA on all global admin accounts so that any window of exposure is reduced; note these network controls only lower attack surface and do not remediate the underlying authorization flaw. Auditing existing API tokens and forcing password rotations on global admin and cross-domain manager accounts is advisable to detect or invalidate any token or credential already obtained through this flaw. Technical ContextAI · show details
Mailu's administrative web UI is a Flask application under core/admin/mailu, and its authorization model is implemented in core/admin/mailu/ui/access.py through the decorators global_admin, domain_admin, and owner. The domain_admin decorator (guarding user_edit and user_password) and the owner decorator (guarding token_create) originally authorized access by testing only whether the target object's domain appeared in the current user's get_managed_domains() list, with no comparison of the relative privilege rank of actor and target. This is CWE-285 (Improper Authorization): the policy check answers 'is this object in a domain I control?' but never 'do I outrank the owner of this object?'. As a result a domain manager could edit a global admin's profile, reset that admin's password, or create an API token for that admin - each of which yields a credential or token usable as the privileged account. The upstream fix introduces a _can_manage_user(actor, target) helper that permits access when the actor is a global admin or is managing their own account, and otherwise denies when the target is a global admin or when the target manages any domain the actor does not also manage (expressed as a set-subset comparison of get_managed_domains()). The same rank check is wired into both domain_admin and owner, and the accompanying regression tests (tests/anonmail/test_domain_admin_privesc.py) assert HTTP 403 for a manager targeting a global admin or another domain's manager while preserving 200 for legitimate management of subordinate mailboxes in the manager's own domain. The product is shipped as Docker images, so affected instances are those built from source prior to the fixing commit 8577c929b4ade04d3cd4210cf036601abd793556; the CPE record cpe:2.3:a:mailu:mailu:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* carries a wildcard version, reflecting that the advisory bounds affected versions by commit rather than by a tagged release number.

Mailu is a mail server distributed as a set of Docker images. Prior to 8577c929b4ade04d3cd4210cf036601abd793556, a domain manager targeting an administrative account or another domain manager with greater privileges can reset passwords or obtain tokens for that account. This authorization failure allows a domain manager to take over a higher-privileged account and exercise that account's permissions. This vulnerability is addressed by commit 8577c929b4ade04d3cd4210cf036601abd793556.

Executive ViewAI
Mailu, an open-source Docker-based mail server, contains an authenticated authorization flaw that can let a delegated domain manager take over higher-privileged accounts-including global administrators-when those privileged users own mailboxes in the manager's domain. This creates a path from limited delegated mail administration to full control of the mail platform and its data, so leadership should prioritize it in any multi-tenant or delegated mail environment; organizations without delegated domain managers are effectively not exposed. No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: remove or suspend delegated domain-manager roles where business-critical, ensure no global admin or cross-domain manager owns a mailbox in a delegated domain, rotate credentials and API tokens for privileged accounts, limit network access to Mailu admin and API endpoints, monitor authentication, password-reset, and token-creation logs for anomalous activity, and apply the vendor patch when released.
