Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker's traffic to traverse a network segment monitored by a vulnerable Suricata (prior to 7.0.17 / 8.0.6), and requires crafting an IPv4/IPv6 flow pair whose raw address words, ports, protocol, VLAN, recursion level, live device, and hash bucket all align so the family-blind comparator in flow-hash.c treats them as the same flow. Realistic limits: the collision demands attacker knowledge/control of these hashing inputs to line up an opposite-family flow (reflected in AC:H), so it is targeted rather than opportunistic; impact is confined to defeating Suricata's own detection/flowbit/IP-only logic (no host confidentiality or availability loss). Detection sensors that inspect only IPv4 or only IPv6 traffic, or deployments where the two families cannot be made to share hashing inputs, are not realistically affected.

Impact

This is a genuine but specialized detection-integrity flaw in a widely-used open-source IDS/IPS, not a broad compromise vector. The CVSS 5.9 (medium) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N is well-reasoned: unauthenticated and network-reachable (traffic-driven), but AC:H reflects that an attacker must engineer an IPv4/IPv6 pair whose raw address words, ports, protocol, VLAN, recursion level, live device, and hash bucket all align to force the flow-hash collision - a non-trivial precondition confirmed by the src/flow-hash.c source diff. Impact is C:N/I:H/A:N: no data confidentiality or availability loss, but the integrity of the security monitoring engine's own decisions is undermined (incorrect flowbit state, detection bypass, IP-only rule bypass). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the provided data, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis - a defense-weakening bug rather than a mass-exploited RCE. The 'Authentication Bypass' tag conflicts with the actual CWE-697 (incorrect comparison) nature of the flaw and should be treated as a mislabel: nothing here bypasses authentication; it bypasses detection.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker whose traffic transits a monitored Suricata segment crafts IPv6 (or IPv4) packets whose 5-tuple and hashing inputs collide with an existing opposite-family flow, causing the malicious flow to inherit the benign flow's state and evade flowbit-based or IP-only detection rules. Malicious content in the colliding flow then passes without alerting, or an IP-only block is sidestepped. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the high attack complexity means crafting a reliable collision requires knowledge of the target's flow-hashing inputs.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

Detection bypass in OISF Suricata before 7.0.17 and 8.0.6 lets an unauthenticated remote attacker who can craft an aligned IPv4/IPv6 flow pair make the engine treat the two flows as one, corrupting flowbit and IP-only state so signatures may fail to fire. The root cause is a family-blind comparison in src/flow-hash.c (CWE-697, CVSS 5.9, AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/I:H), reflecting a targeted technique rather than opportunistic scanning because the attacker must line up raw address words, ports, protocol, VLAN, recursion level, live device and hash bucket across families. Impact is confined to the IDS/IPS's own detection-integrity logic - no host confidentiality or availability loss was assessed - and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, though vendor patches are available in 7.0.17 and 8.0.6.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Suricata 8.0.6 (8.0.x) or 7.0.17 (7.0.x); these are the vendor-released fixed versions and the patch introduces an explicit IP-family check in every flow comparator (commits 181b3b2fdd1fe87e4534de4fc79e29a083ef125f, 4e2f23d031fbcfd72883bacd3d723c9874f23701 and bc41dcc854e24487d3786ce578a8a86a8350ab20), with details in advisory GHSA-fvwh-wjcq-2586 and issue 8558. If upgrading immediately is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to separate IPv4 and IPv6 inspection onto distinct sensor instances or distinct flow tables so a cross-family collision cannot occur - the trade-off is additional hardware and duplicated rule/flowbit state, and any flowbit rule that intentionally correlates across families will no longer match. Disabling IPv6 (or IPv4) decoding on the affected sensor also removes the precondition, at the cost of losing all visibility for that protocol family; disabling flowbits/IP-only rules is not recommended because it degrades detection generally without fully closing the bypass. After patching, treat historical alerts as potentially unreliable for the affected interface and consider re-scanning retained PCAPs with the fixed build.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Suricata maintains per-flow state in hash tables keyed by a FlowKey built from raw address words, ports, protocol, VLAN, recursion level, live device and the hash bucket itself; lookup uses comparators such as CmpFlowPacket, CmpFlowKey, FlowCompareICMPv4 and FlowCompareESP in src/flow-hash.c. Because the raw address representation stores an IPv4 address in the same word-shaped structure used for IPv6, an IPv6 address whose leading 32 bits match an IPv4 address (and whose remaining comparison inputs align) can satisfy every field check while the IP family differs, so the comparator returns a match and the opposite-family flow state is reused. The upstream fix adds an explicit family equality test - ((p->src.family AF_INET) FLOW_IS_IPV4(f)) - to each comparator, closing the CWE-697 incorrect-comparison class. CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:oisf:suricata) confirms the affected component is the OISF Suricata engine across releases prior to the fixed branches. Practically, a stale or foreign flow record can suppress or misattribute flowbits and IP-only rules, giving an attacker a way to hide traffic from the sensor rather than to compromise the sensor host, and deployments that inspect only one IP family cannot produce the cross-family collision at all.

DescriptionNVD

Suricata is a network Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention System and Network Security Monitoring engine. Prior to 7.0.17 and 8.0.6, src/flow-hash.c can treat an IPv4 and IPv6 flow as equal without comparing the IP family when their raw address words, ports, protocol, VLAN, recursion level, live device, and hash bucket align. An IPv6 packet can therefore reuse IPv4 flow state or the reverse, causing incorrect flowbit state, detection bypass, or IP-only bypass. This issue is fixed in versions 8.0.6 and 7.0.17.
