| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the Semantic MediaWiki extension (version <= 7.1.0) installed on a MediaWiki site with the Special:URIResolver special page reachable, which is its default state. The attacker needs no authentication (PR:N) and no server configuration change, but success depends on victim interaction (UI:R): a target must click or follow the attacker-crafted Special:URIResolver/<subpage> link. Impact is limited to redirecting that victim to an attacker-influenced host (optionally with embedded user:pass@host credentials) for phishing - it does not by itself expose server data or allow code execution. The primary limiting factors are the required user interaction and the fact that harm is realized only through downstream social engineering on the redirected host. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-severity issue best treated as a moderate, not urgent, priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 6.1) is the textbook reflected open-redirect profile: network-reachable, no authentication, but requiring victim interaction (clicking a crafted link), with only limited confidentiality/integrity impact and a scope change reflecting redirection to a different security authority (the foreign host). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no weaponized exploit are present in the provided data, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - though the vendor advisory does document a concrete reproduction payload (Special:URIResolver/mw-3AFoo → mw:Foo → mediawiki.org). The signals are internally consistent: this is a real, easily-triggered flaw but its impact is phishing/credential-harvesting facilitation rather than direct compromise of the wiki. It is a high-quality vendor-confirmed advisory but a low-real-risk issue in the sense that it does not yield code execution, data theft from the server, or service disruption by itself; the danger is entirely in social-engineering leverage from a trusted wiki domain. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a URL on a trusted wiki such as https://victim-wiki.example/wiki/Special:URIResolver/mw-3AFoo (or one embedding user:pass@attacker-host credentials in the resolved authority) and distributes it via email or chat. When a victim clicks the trusted-looking link, Semantic MediaWiki resolves the subpage to a title and issues an HTTP 303 redirect to an attacker-influenced off-host destination, landing the victim on a phishing page. The vendor advisory documents a working reproduction payload, but no standalone exploit tool is publicly identified. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026
An open redirect in the Semantic MediaWiki extension (versions up to and including 7.1.0) lets an unauthenticated remote attacker craft a Special:URIResolver subpage link that issues an HTTP 303 redirect to an off-host destination, optionally embedding user:pass@host credentials in the URL authority. Because the redirect originates from a trusted wiki domain, the link is usable for phishing or credential-harvesting lures, though exploitation requires the victim to follow the crafted URL (UI:R) and no server data disclosure or code execution results directly. There is no indication of active exploitation (no CISA KEV listing) and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis; the vendor addressed the flaw in Semantic MediaWiki 7.2.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to 7.2.0, which is the vendor-released fix: the redirect sink now parses the resolved target URL and compares it against the current host, and returns a bad-title error page when a user or password component is present or when the host does not match the current host (see the release at https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/releases/tag/7.2.0 and advisory GHSA-hw3m-8j5x-94ff). If upgrading immediately is not possible, compensating controls include disabling or restricting access to the Special:URIResolver page (for example via MediaWiki's $wgWhitelistRead, group permissions, or a web-server rule blocking the /wiki/Special:URIResolver path), accepting the trade-off that legitimate URI-resolver functionality is lost; alternatively, restrict interwiki prefixes in $wgInterwikiCentralDB/$wgLocalInterwikis so that resolved titles cannot point at external wikis, though this reduces intended cross-wiki linking and does not address the embedded user:pass@host case. A reverse proxy that inspects Location headers on 303 responses and blocks any host that differs from the site's own hostname can mitigate the phishing path, at the cost of additional latency and the risk of breaking legitimate redirects. Note there is no indication of active exploitation, so this is a moderate-priority fix rather than an emergency one.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Semantic MediaWiki is a widely deployed MediaWiki extension that stores and queries structured data inside wiki pages. The flaw is a classic CWE-601 open redirect in the Special:URIResolver special page: the user-controlled subpage component is resolved to a MediaWiki title, and the page then emits an HTTP 303 redirect to $title->getFullURL() without validating where that URL actually points. Two distinct mechanisms enable off-host redirection. First, an interwiki prefix in the resolved title causes MediaWiki to build a fully qualified URL on the foreign wiki (for example, the subpage 'mw-3AFoo' decodes to the title 'mw:Foo' and resolves to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Foo). Second, when the resolved target carries a URL authority component, attacker-supplied 'user:pass@host' credentials can be embedded directly in the redirect destination. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:semanticmediawiki:semanticmediawiki:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and the Composer package composer/mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki. The upstream fix moves validation to the redirect sink itself, parsing the final resolved target and comparing its host against the current request host and rejecting redirects that contain user or password components - a design note in the advisory stresses that each redirect sink must validate its own final target rather than trusting upstream normalization.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Semantic MediaWiki is a free, open-source extension to MediaWiki that lets users store and query data within the wiki's pages. Prior to version 7.2.0, Special:URIResolver resolves its user-controlled subpage to a MediaWiki title and issues an HTTP 303 redirect to $title->getFullURL() without validating the resolved target. A crafted subpage can make that target point off-host: an interwiki prefix redirects to the foreign wiki (for example Special:URIResolver/mw-3AFoo, which decodes to mw:Foo, redirects to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Foo), and where the resolved URL carries an authority the target can even embed user:pass@host credentials. The result is an open redirect to an attacker-influenced host, usable for phishing from a trusted wiki URL. Version 7.2.0 fixes the issue.
