Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to already hold high-privilege authenticated access to the EKI-1242EIMS web management interface (PR:H) in order to write malicious script into the Modbus transaction management interface, and the stored payload only executes when a separate administrator subsequently opens the affected management page (UI:P). These two conditions - pre-existing admin access plus victim interaction - are the key limiters; there is no unauthenticated or zero-interaction path. Impact on the vulnerable gateway itself is limited to Low confidentiality/integrity, with the more serious consequences landing in the victim administrator's browser session.

Impact

This is a stored/persistent cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-79) in the Modbus transaction management interface of the Advantech EKI-1242EIMS industrial gateway. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H, base 6.3) shows two real limiters that keep this below the critical tier: PR:H means the attacker must already hold high (administrator-level) privileges to reach and write to the transaction interface, and UI:P means a second administrator must actively open the poisoned management page for the payload to fire. The vulnerable-system impact is only Low across confidentiality and integrity; the score is inflated mainly by the generous SC:H/SI:H/SA:H subsequent-system ratings, which treat the victim admin's browser/session as fully compromisable - arguably optimistic for a single injected script. No CISA KEV listing, no public POC, and no EPSS score are present, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. Net: a legitimate but not urgent finding - the high-privilege precondition and required user interaction make it a targeted post-authentication privilege-consolidation vector rather than a mass-exploitable pre-auth bug. Treat as medium priority, patch on normal OT maintenance cadence.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A remote attacker who already has authenticated administrative access to an EKI-1242EIMS gateway injects a malicious script into a Modbus transaction management field that is persistently stored. When another administrator later opens the affected management page, the script executes in their browser session, letting the attacker hijack that session or perform actions in the victim's context. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 16, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the Modbus transaction management interface of Advantech EKI-1242EIMS and EKI-1242IEIMS industrial gateways (firmware V1.06.01) lets an attacker who already holds high-privileged authenticated access to the gateway web UI persist malicious script that later executes in the browser of any administrator who opens the affected management page. Because the payload is stored and served from the device itself, the more serious consequences land in the victim administrator's browser session (scope change to High per the CVSS:4.0 vector, and C:H/I:H/S:H in the 3.1 assessment) while impact on the gateway itself is limited to Low confidentiality and integrity, with no availability impact. Exploitation requires two compounding preconditions - pre-existing admin credentials (PR:H) and a victim administrator's subsequent page view (UI:P) - so there is no unauthenticated or zero-interaction path; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor advisory published; an exact patched firmware version is not specified in the available data, so administrators should consult the Advantech security advisory (https://advcloudfiles.advantech.com/cms/5dafee28-ad53-4d07-a328-7896fcc24b6e/Security%20Advisory%20PDF%20File/SECURITY-ADVISORY----EKI-1242IEIMS-updated-20260904.pdf) and the Nozomi Networks Labs advisory (https://www.nozominetworks.com/labs/vulnerability-advisories-cve-2026-73169) to obtain the fixed firmware release and apply it to all EKI-1242EIMS and EKI-1242IEIMS units, prioritizing devices running V1.06.01. Until patched firmware is deployed, the primary compensating control is to remove the precondition entirely: restrict the web management interface to a dedicated out-of-band management VLAN reachable only from a hardened jump host, since the attacker must already hold high-privileged access to inject the payload - the trade-off is loss of convenient remote administration and a requirement to route changes through the jump host. Second, enforce least-privilege on the gateway so that only the minimum number of trusted accounts hold administrator rights, and audit/rotate those credentials, because reducing the number of high-privileged accounts reduces both the injection vector and the number of administrators who can become victims; the trade-off is added account-management overhead and possible operational friction during incident response. Third, since the stored payload executes in the victim's browser, harden the admin workstation: use a separate, non-general-purpose browser profile (or a dedicated management host) with strict Content-Security-Policy enforcement and script blocking for the gateway's origin, and never browse other sites from the same session - the trade-off is reduced usability of the management console and possible breakage of legitimate page scripts. Stored scripts persist in the device configuration, so after patching, review and clear any suspicious entries in the Modbus transaction management pages and factory-reset or reconfigure units that were exposed. Disabling or firewalling the Modbus/TCP port (502) does not mitigate this specific flaw, since the injection and the stored payload both live in the web management interface rather than the Modbus protocol path.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation, i.e. cross-site scripting) of the stored/persistent variety, located in the web-based Modbus transaction management interface of the Advantech EKI-1242EIMS series. Modbus transaction management pages in these industrial gateways allow operators to configure and inspect Modbus/TCP request-response mappings; when the application writes attacker-supplied field content into a management page without output encoding or input neutralisation, the script is persisted on the device and re-rendered to every administrator who visits that page. The CVSS:4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H) confirms the attacker needs high privileges on the device but no additional attack conditions, that exploitation requires passive victim interaction, and that the security authority is changed - the vulnerable system is only Low-impact while the subsequent (browser) system is High-impact. The independent CVSS:3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) is consistent with this reading. Reported by Nozomi Networks Labs, with affected CPEs covering both advantech:eki-1242eims and the closely related advantech:eki-1242ieims model.
