MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Defense Evasion The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitable when a GetSimple CMS (<=3.4.0a) or GetSimpleCMS-CE (<=3.3.22) instance has completed installation but admin/setup.php remains present because the flawed auto-deletion self-excluded that file - which is the default post-install state, not a misconfiguration the admin must introduce. The only real limiting factors are that the target must run an affected version and that setup.php must be reachable over the network; there is no authentication, user interaction, or special feature toggle required. Exploitation is prevented only where an operator has already manually removed setup.php or blocked access to the /admin/ path. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 9.8) is credible for this flaw: exploitation is a single unauthenticated HTTP request to a leftover setup endpoint, with full impact once an admin account is created. The dangerous part is that this affects sites believed to be securely installed - the safety control that admins rely on silently fails, so the exposure is latent and default-configuration. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided, and there is no known patch, so scoring rests on the description and CVSS alone rather than observed exploitation; treat it as a high-priority, easy-to-weaponize issue that operators should remediate promptly rather than a confirmed mass-exploitation event. The chief mitigating factor is the product's small footprint, not any technical difficulty of attack. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker scans for GetSimple CMS / GetSimpleCMS-CE sites and requests /admin/setup.php on a fully installed target; because the file was never deleted, the script accepts input and the attacker submits a new administrator username and password. They then log into /admin/ with the account they just created and take over content, upload code, or pivot into the hosting environment. No public exploit is documented, but the attack requires only a browser and the steps described in the advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 11, 2026
Unauthenticated administrator account creation affects GetSimple CMS (v3.4.0a and earlier) and its community edition GetSimpleCMS-CE (v3.3.22 and earlier), where a self-exclusion bug in the post-installation cleanup logic leaves admin/setup.php reachable on production sites. Any remote attacker can invoke the still-present setup script to register a new administrator, yielding full control of the CMS. No patched version exists at publication and no public exploit has been identified, though the flaw is trivially reproducible from the advisory description.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, so apply compensating controls immediately. The most direct fix is to manually delete admin/setup.php from every installed instance, since the application's own auto-deletion is what fails; this has no side effect on a completed install because setup is only needed during first-time provisioning. As a defense in depth, block or deny web access to /admin/setup.php at the web server or WAF layer (e.g., a location rule returning 403), and restrict access to the /admin/ directory to trusted source IPs where feasible, accepting that IP allowlisting can inconvenience legitimate remote administrators. After remediation, audit the CMS user list and remove any unrecognized administrator accounts and rotate credentials. Monitor GHSA-rw2c-w4mg-46g4 for a patched release and upgrade when one is published.

Technical ContextAI · show details
GetSimple CMS is a lightweight, flat-file (XML-backed, no database) PHP content management system; GetSimpleCMS-CE is a community-maintained fork. Installation runs through admin/setup.php, which collects the initial administrator credentials. To prevent reuse, the application ships an automated control that is supposed to delete admin/setup.php once installation completes. The vulnerability (CWE-285, Improper Authorization) is a logic flaw in that deletion routine: a self-exclusion condition causes the routine to skip removing the very file it is meant to delete, so setup.php survives and remains callable by anyone. Because setup.php performs privileged account creation without any authorization check on a post-install system, an attacker who reaches it can mint a fresh admin account. The affected code is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:getsimplecms:getsimplecms and cpe:2.3:a:getsimplecms-ce:getsimplecms-ce.

DescriptionCVE.org
GetSimple CMS is a content management system (CMS), and GetSimple CMS CE is the community edition of that CMS. A logic flaw in GetSimple CMS (v3.4.0a and below) and GetSimpleCMS-CE (v3.3.22 and below) allows unauthenticated attackers to create a new administrator account. The application features an automated security control designed to delete the sensitive admin/setup.php file post-installation. However, this control is neutralized by a self-exclusion bug within the deletion logic, leaving the setup script accessible for unauthorized account creation even after a legitimate installation is completed. As of time of publication, no known patched versions are available.
Technical POC Analysis
The primary bug class is CWE-285 Improper Authorization, with CWE-306 and CWE-489 also cited in the advisory.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
GetSimple CMS v3.4.0a and earlier (including CE v3.3.22 or earlier) allows unauthenticated remote attackers to create administrator accounts by accessing the post-installation setup script, enabling complete CMS takeover. Any organization running affected versions faces immediate risk of unauthorized access, website defacement, and potential data exfiltration.
Until a vendor patch becomes available: (1) Immediately delete or disable admin/setup.php on all installations; (2) Block HTTP/HTTPS access to setup paths via web server rules or WAF; (3) Restrict administrative endpoints to known internal IP ranges if feasible; (4) Enable audit logging and alerting for administrator account creation and login events; (5) Review all existing admin accounts and reset credentials on affected systems. These mitigations reduce but do not eliminate exposure.
