| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 score of 7.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:L) reflects a network-exploitable, low-complexity attack requiring only low-privilege authentication with no user interaction - a reliable exploitation profile. The I:H rating correctly captures the integrity impact of destroying shared admin-owned configuration, though the A:L designation understates operational impact: disabling all knowledge bases that share the affected external connection is arguably a high availability event for organizations whose workflows depend on that infrastructure. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in legnica running Open WebUI for document retrieval would face complete disruption of their knowledge retrieval workflows if this deletion cascades across multiple knowledge bases. EPSS data is not provided in the available intelligence, so quantified exploitation probability is unavailable; the CVE is not in the CISA KEV catalog and no public exploit code has been identified, suggesting this has not seen opportunistic exploitation in the wild. The realistic risk is highest in multi-user, multi-team deployments where external connections are shared - single-user or small-team instances where external connections are not used may not be affected by the cascade at all. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026
Improper privilege management in Open WebUI 0.10.0 through 0.11.0 allows any authenticated low-privilege user with write access to a knowledge base to delete administrator-owned external connection configurations shared across the entire instance. The DELETE /api/v1/knowledge/{id}/delete endpoint in knowledge.py correctly validated the user's write access to their own knowledge base but then cascaded the delete to the underlying shared external connection without verifying admin role or checking whether other knowledge bases depended on that connection. This means a single non-admin user can render all other knowledge bases on the instance that share the same external vector store connection permanently unavailable. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; vendor-released patch is available in version 0.11.1.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Open WebUI to version 0.11.1 or later, which introduces both an admin role check and a reference-count guard before any external connection is deleted - see the release at https://github.com/open-webui/open-webui/releases/tag/v0.11.1 and the fix commit at https://github.com/open-webui/open-webui/commit/dc03e7e595d61be97b25a1dd7bb99ad264f73199. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict write access to knowledge bases so that only users with administrator-equivalent trust can create or delete knowledge base entries until patching is completed - this trades off self-service knowledge management for security. Additionally, audit existing external connection configurations post-incident to detect whether unauthorized deletions have already occurred by reviewing knowledge base accessibility and connection records. Note that reverting deleted external connections requires administrator intervention to re-create the connection configuration.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Open WebUI is a self-hosted Python/FastAPI AI interface that supports knowledge bases backed by external vector store connections administered at the instance level by administrators. The vulnerable code path in backend/open_webui/routers/knowledge.py handled DELETE /api/v1/knowledge/{id}/delete by checking the requesting user's write permission against the knowledge base object, then unconditionally deleting the underlying external connection resource (connection_id) - an admin-owned, instance-shared configuration - without a role guard or dependency count check. CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management) captures the root cause precisely: the system enforced object-level authorization at the knowledge base tier but failed to enforce appropriate privilege boundaries when cascading deletions to administrator-owned shared infrastructure. The fix introduced in commit dc03e7e5 adds both conditions: user.role == 'admin' and await _count_external_connection_mappings(connection_id, db=db) <= 1 must both be true before the external connection is removed, preventing non-admins from ever touching shared connection resources and preventing even admins from deleting connections still referenced by other knowledge bases.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Open WebUI is an extensible, feature-rich, and user-friendly self-hosted AI platform. From 0.10.0 until 0.11.1, DELETE /api/v1/knowledge/{id}/delete in backend/open_webui/routers/knowledge.py authorized deletion against the knowledge base but then removed its administrator-owned external connection without a separate administrator check or a check for other dependent knowledge bases. A non-administrator with write access to one external knowledge base could delete shared instance configuration and make every other knowledge base using that connection unavailable. This issue is fixed in version 0.11.1.

Executive ViewAI
Open WebUI versions 0.10.0 through 0.11.0 contain an access control flaw that allows authenticated standard users to disable knowledge base configurations shared across an organization, disrupting workflows for teams that depend on shared external data connections. This represents a privilege escalation affecting service availability across the instance.
