Exploitation Conditions

Requires a valid Open WebUI user account (any role; PR:L in CVSS). The web retrieval endpoints POST /api/v1/retrieval/process/web and POST /api/v1/retrieval/process/web/search must be enabled (the default state). The most impactful exploitation path requires deployment on Microsoft Azure, where 168.63.129.16 is reachable from every VM on the wire-link network. On non-Azure deployments, 168.63.129.16 is not reachable from the host, so that specific target is unavailable; however, other special-use ranges covered by the fix (multicast, 6to4 relay, IPv6 site-local, NAT64) may be reachable depending on network topology, giving reduced but non-zero SSRF capability in other environments. No user interaction is required beyond issuing the API call. ENABLE_LOCAL_WEB_FETCH=false (the default) does not block 168.63.129.16 in pre-patch versions because Python classifies it as globally routable.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.1 with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N is well-calibrated. AC:H reflects the Azure-deployment-specific condition - on non-Azure or on-premises instances, 168.63.129.16 is not reachable, dramatically reducing real-world exposure. PR:L confirms that a valid user account is required, limiting the attack surface to trusted-but-adversarial users or compromised accounts. The Scope:Changed metric is appropriate because successful exploitation reaches beyond the Open WebUI process into Azure platform infrastructure, potentially yielding VM identities, managed-identity tokens, or certificates. EPSS data is not provided, and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV. No public exploit identified at time of analysis. In practice, risk is high for Azure-hosted Open WebUI deployments where multi-tenant or less-trusted user access is permitted; for on-premises or non-Azure cloud deployments the practical risk is substantially lower. The embedded-IPv4-in-IPv6 bypass vectors (also fixed in 0.11.1) are a sophistication indicator that suggests the researcher performed thorough protocol-level analysis.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated attacker with a low-privilege Open WebUI account on an Azure-hosted instance submits POST /api/v1/retrieval/process/web with a target URL resolving to 168.63.129.16 or an equivalent IPv6-encoded form (e.g., ::ffff:168.63.129.16). The server fetches the Azure platform channel, which returns VM metadata, managed identity tokens, or internal certificates depending on the path requested. The attacker uses the returned content - visible in the retrieval response - to escalate privileges within the Azure subscription or pivot to other Azure resources accessible via the acquired token. No public proof-of-concept is identified, but the attack pattern is well-understood and straightforward for anyone familiar with Azure IMDS abuse.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026

Server-side request forgery in Open WebUI prior to 0.11.1 allows authenticated users to reach internal cloud infrastructure by exploiting gaps in Python's is_global address classification. The web retrieval endpoints POST /api/v1/retrieval/process/web and /process/web/search relied solely on Python's built-in global-address check, which does not reject the Azure platform channel IP (168.63.129.16) or other reserved ranges such as multicast, 6to4 relay, NAT64, IPv6 site-local, and embedded-IPv4 representations. On Azure-hosted deployments this enables exfiltration of platform metadata, certificates, and management tokens accessible via the wire-link channel. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; vendor-released patch exists as version 0.11.1.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Open WebUI version 0.11.1 or later, which adds an explicit IP deny list covering 168.63.129.16 and related reserved ranges, plus IPv6-embedded-IPv4 detection. The GitHub advisory is at https://github.com/open-webui/open-webui/security/advisories/GHSA-34r3-9m95-vq73 and the fix commit is e3e4bd87df6fc629e7e22081d980d55a7632b8b7. If immediate upgrade is not possible on an Azure-hosted instance, a compensating control is to add 168.63.129.16 to the WEB_FETCH_FILTER_LIST operator configuration (now supported via the new filter-list extension mechanism introduced in 0.11.1's config.py). Additionally, restrict the web retrieval feature to only fully trusted accounts, or disable it via ENABLE_LOCAL_WEB_FETCH=false and a network egress policy that blocks 168.63.129.16 at the VM or NSG level. Note: NSG-level blocking of 168.63.129.16 on Azure can interfere with health probes and certificate rotation for managed services - verify compatibility before applying.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Open WebUI is a self-hosted AI platform (Python/FastAPI) that exposes document and web retrieval endpoints in backend/open_webui/retrieval/web/utils.py. The root cause (CWE-918: Server-Side Request Forgery) is that the pre-fix SSRF guard called Python's ipaddress.ip_address().is_global to decide whether a resolved IP was safe to fetch. Python's is_global specifically returns True for 168.63.129.16 (the Azure wire-link platform channel) because it is globally routable on the public internet - it is only meaningful as a non-public address within Azure VM network namespaces. The fix adds an explicit deny list in config.py covering 168.63.129.16, 192.88.99.0/24, 224.0.0.0/4, and a range of IPv6 special-use prefixes. The patch also introduced _embedded_ipv4() logic to detect IPv4 addresses embedded inside IPv6 representations (mapped, compatible, 6to4, teredo, NAT64), closing a secondary bypass channel. Affected component: open-webui < 0.11.1 (EUVD-2026-75184). GitHub advisory GHSA-34r3-9m95-vq73 and commit e3e4bd87 confirm the scope.

DescriptionCVE.org

Open WebUI is an extensible, feature-rich, and user-friendly self-hosted AI platform. Prior to 0.11.1, POST /api/v1/retrieval/process/web and POST /api/v1/retrieval/process/web/search in backend/open_webui/retrieval/web/utils.py treated Python's globally routable address classification as proof that a destination was external. An authenticated user could make an Azure-hosted instance fetch and return content from 168.63.129.16, the Azure platform channel, as well as other reserved ranges that the standard classification did not reject. This issue is fixed in version 0.11.1.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Open WebUI versions prior to version 0.11.1 contain a server-side request forgery vulnerability that allows authenticated users to access restricted internal cloud infrastructure. Organizations running Open WebUI on Azure face particular risk, as attackers could use this access to extract platform credentials and management tokens. Although no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, the vulnerability's access to cloud management systems poses significant risk and requires urgent patching.
