OAuth and SCIM identity confusion in Open WebUI 0.6.41-0.10.x (SQLite-backed deployments only) allows unauthenticated remote attackers to hijack arbitrary stored user accounts, including administrator accounts, by presenting an OAuth subject claim containing SQL LIKE wildcard characters. SQLAlchemy's JSON.contains() on SQLite compiles to a substring LIKE match rather than an exact equality check, so a crafted sub claim such as %admin% can resolve to a different stored identity and cause the server to issue the attacker a valid session token for that identity. Vendor-released patch is available in version 0.11.1; no active exploitation has been confirmed.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Open WebUI version 0.11.1, which fixes the root cause by replacing JSON.contains() with subscript-based exact-string equality in both get_user_by_oauth_sub and get_user_by_scim_external_id. The release is available at https://github.com/open-webui/open-webui/releases/tag/v0.11.1 and is detailed in security advisory GHSA-wpmr-8h3q-fwj7. For operators unable to patch immediately, disabling OAuth and SCIM login entirely (reverting to local username-and-password authentication) eliminates the vulnerable code path completely and is the most reliable compensating control; the trade-off is loss of single sign-on functionality. Alternatively, if the OAuth provider can be configured to guarantee that issued sub claims contain only alphanumeric characters and hyphens (no % or _), this removes the wildcard surface - but this is provider-dependent and cannot be universally relied upon as a durable mitigation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Open WebUI stores OAuth and SCIM identity data in JSON columns on the User model. The functions get_user_by_oauth_sub and get_user_by_scim_external_id in backend/open_webui/models/users.py previously used SQLAlchemy's JSON.contains() to match provider sub-claims. On SQLite, this ORM method generates a LIKE-based substring match rather than an equality predicate, making the SQL wildcards % (any sequence) and _ (any single character) operative within the attacker-supplied sub value. This is CWE-155: Improper Neutralization of Wildcards or Special Elements Used in a Library Function. The prior PostgreSQL code path already used JSONB subscript notation with string equality and was unaffected. Commit 73c1f5806aeb6345dad5de8f5aa26d1f3d0bef80 (PR #28624) unified both paths to the safer subscript form User.oauth[provider]['sub'].as_string() == sub, eliminating the LIKE compilation on all backends.

OAuth endpoint is network-reachable with no prior auth, but AC:H reflects the non-trivial requirement to craft a wildcard sub that matches a stored identity on a SQLite-only deployment.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Open WebUI is an extensible, feature-rich, and user-friendly self-hosted AI platform. From 0.6.41 until 0.11.1, get_user_by_oauth_sub and get_user_by_scim_external_id in backend/open_webui/models/users.py used JSON contains matching that compiled to SQL LIKE substring matching on SQLite. An OAuth subject containing percent or underscore wildcard characters could resolve to a different stored identity, potentially selecting an administrator account and issuing the attacker that account's session; PostgreSQL deployments were not affected. This issue is fixed in version 0.11.1.

Executive ViewAI
Open WebUI versions 0.6.41-0.10.x with SQLite backends are vulnerable to unauthenticated account hijacking attacks that can grant attackers administrative access without credentials. This flaw allows any remote attacker to impersonate legitimate users, including system administrators, bypassing all authentication controls. Organizations running affected versions face immediate risk of unauthorized system administration and potential data compromise.
Apply vendor patch to version 0.11.1 immediately. If patching is delayed, disable OAuth and SCIM authentication mechanisms and implement network-level access controls to restrict Open WebUI connections to trusted IP ranges only.
