1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a valid authenticated session at any privilege level - unauthenticated access is insufficient. The attacker must be able to reach POST /livewire/update on the target Snipe-IT instance over the network. The target must be running a version before 8.7.0. The attacker must understand the Livewire signed-snapshot format sufficiently to craft or replay a payload targeting a protected lifecycle method, which raises attack complexity to High. No special non-default configuration is required - the vulnerable code path is present in any standard deployment of an affected version. Exploitation is bounded to confidentiality and integrity impacts; availability is not affected.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.4 with vector AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:P reflects that exploitation requires a valid authenticated session and meaningful complexity in understanding and crafting signed Livewire snapshots. Real-world risk is nonetheless significant: Snipe-IT is broadly deployed across enterprise IT departments and government environments, and even a mid-sized municipal IT team in radom should treat this as urgent because any authenticated user - including low-privilege staff - can silently escalate to admin-equivalent access by minting durable personal access tokens. The VC:H/VI:H impact metrics confirm full compromise of sensitive admin data confidentiality and system integrity. No CISA KEV listing and no public PoC have been identified at time of analysis, which moderates immediacy but does not diminish the severity given the low barrier to exploitation once an authenticated foothold exists.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker authenticates to Snipe-IT as a low-privilege user, then intercepts or reconstructs a signed Livewire snapshot for an admin-restricted component - such as the OAuth application management interface - and replays it via a crafted POST to /livewire/update. The server invokes the protected lifecycle method without re-validating authorization, creating an OAuth client or personal access token that the attacker retains for persistent privileged API access. No public PoC has been identified, but the attack requires only familiarity with Livewire's documented snapshot signing mechanism.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026

Privilege escalation in Snipe-IT before 8.7.0 allows any authenticated user to bypass authorization controls by replaying signed Livewire component snapshots directly against the /livewire/update endpoint. Because authorization is enforced only at the HTTP route layer and not within Livewire component lifecycle methods, a low-privilege session holder can invoke protected admin operations including creating OAuth clients, minting personal access tokens, and reading sensitive administrative data. No active exploitation has been confirmed (no CISA KEV listing), but the vendor-confirmed fix is available in version 8.7.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Snipe-IT to version 8.7.0 or later immediately; this release adds authorization enforcement within Livewire component lifecycle methods rather than relying solely on route-level guards. The patch and full advisory are available at https://github.com/grokability/snipe-it/security/advisories/GHSA-jchx-hfqg-rm2m. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict access to the POST /livewire/update endpoint at the reverse proxy or WAF layer to only trusted, authenticated internal network segments, noting that this will break legitimate Livewire-powered UI interactions for affected users. As a compensating detective control, audit all existing OAuth clients and personal access tokens in the admin panel for entries created by non-administrator accounts and revoke any that are unrecognized.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Snipe-IT is a PHP/Laravel-based open-source IT asset management platform developed by Grokability (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:grokability:snipe-it:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*). It uses the Livewire framework, which enables stateful reactive UI components in Laravel by serializing and cryptographically signing component state into 'snapshots' that are round-tripped between browser and server via POST requests to /livewire/update. The root cause is CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management): authorization gates are applied at the HTTP route level only, leaving Livewire component lifecycle methods unprotected. An authenticated user who crafts or replays a valid signed snapshot can invoke methods restricted to administrators without those methods performing their own authorization check, because the framework-level route guard is bypassed by posting directly to the Livewire update endpoint.

DescriptionCVE.org

Snipe-IT before 8.7.0 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability in Livewire components that enforce authorization only at the route level, not within component lifecycle methods. Attackers with a valid authenticated session can replay signed component snapshots via POST /livewire/update to invoke protected methods and escalate privileges, including creating OAuth clients, minting personal access tokens, and accessing sensitive admin data.

Technical POC Analysis

The defect is an authorization bypass in Snipe-IT's Livewire components, classed by the advisory as CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization), with CWE-284 and CWE-269 listed as alternative framings.

Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Snipe-IT versions before 8.7.0 contain a privilege escalation flaw affecting any authenticated user in your environment. An employee, contractor, or user with a compromised account can escalate themselves to administrative privileges to create unauthorized API tokens, OAuth clients, and access sensitive asset and administrative data.
