Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a WordPress user account holding shop manager privileges or higher on the target site - anonymous users and subscribers cannot initiate the attack. The WooCommerce plugin must be active (providing the REST API endpoint POST/PUT /wp-json/wc/v3/products/{id}) and the WP Crowdfunding plugin must be active and rendering the campaign rewards sidebar on at least one publicly accessible page. The attacker must be able to reach the WooCommerce REST API endpoint over the network to write the initial payload. Once written, no further attacker interaction is required - the injected SQL executes automatically on every public page view of the affected campaign. Exploitation is bounded by the shop manager role requirement; sites using role-based access controls that restrict REST API write access to trusted internal accounts significantly reduce exposure.

Impact

The CVSS score of 4.9 with PR:H accurately captures the central limiting factor: exploitation requires a shop manager account, which is a privileged internal role not held by arbitrary internet users. However, the second-order nature of this injection pattern is more dangerous than typical stored-injection flaws - the payload executes passively on every public page view of the campaign, meaning a single write action translates into continuous, high-frequency database access without any further attacker interaction or visibility. Confidentiality impact is high (C:H), with potential exposure of hashed credentials, WooCommerce order records, customer PII, and site configuration data. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in gniezno running a community crowdfunding site on WooCommerce should treat this as a priority patch rather than deferring based on the medium base score alone. No EPSS score was provided in the intelligence data, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified numerically. No KEV listing and no publicly available exploit code reduce immediate threat actor leverage, but the Wordfence disclosure and Trac-linked source code make reproducing the vulnerability straightforward for researchers.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A malicious or compromised shop manager authenticates to the WooCommerce REST API and submits a crafted wpneo_reward meta value containing a SQL UNION payload via PUT /wp-json/wc/v3/products/{id}. The payload is stored in the WordPress database without sanitization. Every subsequent visitor who loads a crowdfunding campaign page with the rewards sidebar active triggers the injected query, silently returning database contents - including hashed user passwords, WooCommerce order data, or API keys - to the attacker through a side channel, without any victim interaction or visible anomaly in the page response.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026

Second-order SQL injection in the WP Crowdfunding WordPress plugin by Themeum (versions ≤2.2.1) enables authenticated shop managers to exfiltrate arbitrary database contents. The attack is split across two phases: the attacker writes a malicious payload once to the wpneo_reward post meta via the WooCommerce REST API, and the unsanitized value is then injected into a live SQL query on every subsequent public page view that renders the campaign rewards sidebar - making the extraction persistent and silent. No public exploit or KEV listing is identified at time of analysis, but the high confidentiality impact (C:H) and persistent execution model elevate practical risk beyond the CVSS 4.9 base score.

RemediationAI

Update the WP Crowdfunding plugin to the version corresponding to SVN changeset 3677675, available via the WordPress Plugin repository (see changeset link: plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?reponame=&old=3677675%40wp-crowdfunding&new=3677675%40wp-crowdfunding); this update should be accessible through the standard WordPress plugin updater dashboard. The Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/c6958b5c-2f67-4f9b-acb2-85dc82c039b5 provides additional remediation context. If an immediate plugin update is not possible, revoke shop manager (and higher) access from any untrusted or third-party accounts as an interim control - note this may disrupt legitimate store operations. Additionally, audit existing wpneo_reward post meta values in the WordPress database (wp_postmeta table) for SQL syntax anomalies, as the second-order payload survives plugin deactivation until removed. The exact patched release version is not independently confirmed from the provided references.

Technical ContextAI · show details

WP Crowdfunding is a Themeum plugin (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:themeum:wp_crowdfunding:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) that integrates with WooCommerce to provide WordPress-based crowdfunding campaign functionality. The root cause is CWE-89 (SQL Injection) arising from insufficient escaping of the wpneo_reward post meta value in the query construction logic at wpcftemplate/woocommerce/basic/wpneo-functions.php line 38, which is invoked by the rewards sidebar renderer at wpcftemplate/woocommerce/basic/include/tabs/rewards-sidebar-form.php lines 4 and 29. The vulnerability is classified as second-order (stored) injection: the tainted value is written via the WooCommerce REST API endpoint (POST/PUT /wp-json/wc/v3/products/{id}) at one point in time, then interpolated into an unsanitized SQL query at render time on every public page load of the campaign. This decouples write-time and execution-time, complicating detection via WAF or request-level logging.

DescriptionCVE.org

The WP Crowdfunding plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via 'wpneo_reward' Post Meta in all versions up to, and including, 2.2.1 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with shop manager-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. This is a second-order injection: a Shop Manager writes the malicious payload once via the WooCommerce REST products endpoint (POST/PUT /wp-json/wc/v3/products/{id}), and the injected query executes on every subsequent public page view that renders the campaign rewards sidebar.
