Exploitation Conditions

The victim must be running the SiYuan Electron desktop application (any platform: Windows, macOS, or Linux) in a version prior to 3.8.2 with Node.js integration active in the renderer, which is the default configuration of all desktop releases. The victim must visit an attacker-controlled web page (or a page hosting a malicious advertisement capable of setting clipboard content), and must then manually perform a paste action (Ctrl+V or equivalent) inside an open SiYuan editor. No authentication to any server or service is required of the attacker. The web-only SiYuan deployment is entirely unexploitable because Node.js integration is absent. Exploitation is limited by the required two-step user interaction (page visit followed by paste into the specific application) and by the attack surface being restricted to the desktop product only.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.6 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A) accurately reflects the primary friction point: a single explicit paste action is required from the victim. Real-world risk is nonetheless elevated because paste-from-web is a routine workflow for knowledge workers, which is precisely SiYuan's target user base. The technical impact is severe - Node.js access in the Electron renderer is functionally equivalent to arbitrary OS-level code execution under the victim's account, enabling credential harvesting, lateral movement, and persistent implant installation. This CVE is not listed in CISA KEV and no EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation is assessed as opportunistic rather than confirmed active; however, the attack path is mechanically straightforward and does not require any specialized knowledge of the target environment. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in zabrze would be exposed if their documentation staff or developers use SiYuan desktop, since the product specifically targets that professional-knowledge-worker demographic. The availability of a patch at v3.8.2 and the two-step user interaction requirement (visit a malicious page, then paste inside SiYuan) are the primary risk-limiting factors distinguishing this from a zero-interaction critical.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker publishes a malicious web page that registers a copy-event listener, which fires whenever the user copies anything on that page or in some browsers automatically on page load, writing attacker-controlled HTML containing an embedded script tag into the clipboard under the text/siyuan MIME type. The victim, working in SiYuan desktop, pastes into a document - believing they are inserting a previously copied block - and the paste handler accepts the MIME type as a trust signal, skips sanitization, and renders the HTML. The embedded script executes inside the Electron renderer's Node.js context, spawning a reverse shell or exfiltrating credentials from the victim's filesystem.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 08, 2026

Remote code execution in SiYuan desktop before 3.8.2 allows an unauthenticated network attacker to achieve full Node.js-level system access by poisoning a victim's clipboard from a malicious web page. The paste handler in app/src/protyle/util/paste.ts treated the custom text/siyuan clipboard MIME type as implicitly trusted internal content and skipped HTML sanitization before rendering, and a secondary code path used a same-origin hidden iframe to parse large HTML blobs, permitting inline script execution. Because SiYuan's Electron desktop build enables Node.js integration in the renderer process, injected scripts escape the browser sandbox entirely and execute with the privileges of the running user. A vendor-released patch is available at v3.8.2; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade SiYuan desktop to version 3.8.2 or later, available at https://github.com/siyuan-note/siyuan/releases/tag/v3.8.2. The patch (commit 9ce660652de2ced26ec2d98a5a242cb0b8bb7273) adds a mandatory Lute.Sanitize() invocation on all siyuanHTML content prior to paste processing, regardless of MIME type, and replaces the same-origin iframe HTML parser with DOMParser for large-content paths. Organizations unable to patch immediately should instruct SiYuan users to avoid pasting clipboard content obtained from untrusted or unknown web pages into the desktop application; teams with browser policy controls should disable JavaScript clipboard access (document.execCommand copy/cut/paste, ClipboardItem write) on untrusted sites where feasible, noting this may break legitimate copy-paste workflows. Where the web-only deployment of SiYuan meets workflow requirements, migrating users to that mode eliminates the Node.js attack surface entirely. There is no configuration knob within SiYuan itself to disable Node.js integration in the renderer; patching is the only reliable remediation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

SiYuan is an Electron-based personal knowledge management application (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:siyuan-note:siyuan:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) that embeds both Chromium and Node.js in its renderer process. Electron applications with Node.js integration enabled in the renderer allow renderer-side JavaScript to call Node.js APIs directly, effectively giving renderer-executed scripts full OS access. The root cause class is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation / Cross-Site Scripting), manifesting here as untrusted clipboard HTML injected into the DOM without sanitization. The specific mechanism is that the paste handler in app/src/protyle/util/paste.ts checked for the presence of the text/siyuan MIME type in clipboard data as a signal that the content originated internally, and on that basis skipped the Lute.Sanitize() call. External web pages can synthesize this MIME type by intercepting the copy event via JavaScript and programmatically writing attacker-controlled HTML under the text/siyuan key. A secondary code path for large HTML pastes used document.write() into a hidden same-origin iframe, which is capable of executing embedded scripts independent of the MIME-type bypass. The fix in commit 9ce660652de2ced26ec2d98a5a242cb0b8bb7273 adds unconditional sanitization of siyuanHTML before any paste processing and replaces the iframe parser with DOMParser, which does not execute scripts.

DescriptionCVE.org

SiYuan before 3.8.2 trusts the attacker-writable text/siyuan clipboard MIME type and skips sanitization in the paste handler, allowing code execution in the Node-enabled desktop renderer. Attackers can craft malicious web pages that write to the clipboard, and when pasted into SiYuan, injected scripts execute with full Node.js access through the Electron main process.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

SiYuan desktop before v3.8.2 is vulnerable to remote code execution allowing unauthenticated attackers to achieve full system access by poisoning a victim's clipboard through a malicious web page. An affected user visiting an attacker-controlled website could have their entire desktop compromised with the privileges of their local account, potentially exposing sensitive files, credentials, and enabling lateral movement within the network.
