Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires one of two distinct scenarios depending on the Ant task configuration. For scp and ftp with FTPS: the attacker must control the remote server AND that server must pass Ant's configured identity checks - the server must present a certificate trusted by the Ant JVM truststore or a valid SSH host key, making this primarily a compromised-legitimate-server scenario rather than a pure MITM. For ftp without FTPS: a MITM attacker positioned between the Ant host and the FTP server is sufficient; no certificate or identity check is performed in plain-FTP mode, so network interception alone is enough to serve malicious paths. In all cases, the Ant build must be actively executing an ftp or scp download task during the attack window. The practical blast radius is bounded by the filesystem permissions of the user running Ant: builds running as root or a privileged CI account face maximum exposure, while sandboxed build users with workspace-scoped permissions reduce the reachable write targets.

Impact

The vendor-supplied CVSS 7.4 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) accurately captures the network-reachable but complexity-gated nature of this flaw: AC:H reflects the mandatory MITM or malicious-server precondition. EPSS of 0.19% at the 9th percentile indicates negligible automated or opportunistic exploitation activity, and the vulnerability does not appear in CISA KEV. Despite low exploitation probability, the integrity impact in CI/CD pipeline contexts is disproportionately severe - Ant build processes routinely run with elevated privileges and write to security-sensitive directories, meaning a successful traversal write to .ssh/authorized_keys, a cron directory, or a package repository could achieve persistent access. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in rybnik relying on Ant-driven build automation against external FTP artifact repositories should treat this as a priority patch given the sensitivity of the write target. The C:H in the provided CVSS vector is debatable: the direct mechanism is a file write (I:H), and confidentiality loss is reachable only through secondary steps such as overwriting an authentication config or credential file - C:N better reflects the direct exploit primitive. The AC:H constraint is genuine and material; opportunistic mass exploitation is not plausible.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a MITM position on the network between a CI/CD server running Ant and a plain-FTP artifact repository intercepts the FTP control and data connections. When Ant's ftp task requests a build artifact, the attacker's interposed FTP server responds with a file at path ../../.ssh/authorized_keys, causing the unpatched Ant process to write the attacker's SSH public key outside the project directory into the build account's authorized_keys file. The attacker then authenticates via SSH with the corresponding private key, gaining interactive shell access to the build server. No public proof-of-concept code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv2 – Sep 08, 2026

Relative path traversal in Apache Ant's built-in ftp and scp tasks (versions 1.2 through 1.10.17) permits a malicious or MITM-intercepted remote server to supply server-controlled paths that escape the configured download directory, overwriting arbitrary files with the filesystem permissions of the Ant process. For FTP tasks not using FTPS, no server identity check is enforced, making a network MITM attacker sufficient to trigger the write primitive without needing a valid certificate. The vulnerability is fixed in Ant 1.10.18, which validates destination paths by default; no public exploit code has been identified and EPSS is low at 0.19%.

Path traversal in Apache Ant's built-in ftp and scp tasks (versions 1.2 through pre-1.10.18) allows a malicious or MITM-controlled remote server to supply relative paths that escape the designated download destination directory, writing files to arbitrary locations under the permissions of the Ant process user. The vulnerability mirrors classic zip-slip/tarball-slip patterns applied to file transfer tasks in a widely-used Java build tool. Vendor-released patch: Apache Ant 1.10.18, issued September 6, 2026; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Apache Ant 1.10.18 or later; this version restricts both ftp and scp download tasks from writing outside the destination directory by default, with an opt-out available for existing build files that legitimately depend on the old behavior. The fix is confirmed available per the Apache advisory thread at https://lists.apache.org/thread/05s46qrlbhd06c6rsgvxh8zo0l4p9scz. For teams that cannot patch immediately: users of scp and ftp with FTPS must not disable server identity checks (avoid trustAllCertificates='true' or equivalent host-key bypass flags), as this is the primary guard against a compromised-server scenario. For ftp tasks using plain FTP, migrate to FTPS to enable server identity validation and eliminate the unauthenticated MITM attack surface; this is the only effective workaround for that mode. As an additional defense-in-depth measure, run the Ant process as a dedicated low-privilege account scoped to the project workspace, minimizing the filesystem locations reachable by a traversal write - this limits blast radius but does not block the vulnerability.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Apache Ant is a Java-based XML-driven build automation tool ubiquitous in enterprise Java development. Its built-in ftp Ant task supports both plain FTP and FTPS connections, and the scp task supports SSH-based file copy, both providing download capabilities from remote servers. The root cause is CWE-23 (Relative Path Traversal): prior to 1.10.18, neither task validated that the remote-server-supplied filename component stayed within the configured destination directory. A server returning a file with a path such as ../../etc/cron.d/backdoor would cause Ant to resolve and write that path relative to the working directory, exiting the intended download location. The EUVD (EUVD-2026-72281) confirms affected versions span Apache Ant 1.2 through 1.10.17. For FTPS and SCP, server identity verification (certificate or host key checks) must additionally be bypassed or compromised; for plain FTP, no such check exists, leaving the MITM attack surface open by design of the protocol.
