Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to achieve Man-in-the-Middle network positioning between the libcurl client and the LDAP server - for example via ARP poisoning, rogue DNS, or network layer adjacency. Beyond network positioning, the target application must specifically use libcurl's LDAP protocol handler with SASL-based authentication; applications using curl for HTTP, FTP, SMTP, or any non-LDAP scheme are not exposed to this code path. If LDAP traffic is encapsulated in a separately validated TLS tunnel (LDAPS), the attacker must additionally defeat that TLS channel before the SASL bypass is reachable. No authentication to the target system is required on the attacker's part (PR:N). The CVSS AC:H metric directly encodes the MITM prerequisite as the primary complexity driver.

Impact

The CVSS 7.4 score and AC:H metric correctly capture the central limiting factor: successful exploitation demands active Man-in-the-Middle network positioning, which is a meaningful barrier in most modern environments where network segments are isolated or monitored. The EPSS of 0.27% (18th percentile) is consistent with a technically credible but operationally difficult-to-exploit class of vulnerability - the LDAP-with-SASL code path is exercised by only a subset of libcurl deployments, and passive or opportunistic network scanning cannot trigger it. No public exploit has been identified and there is no CISA KEV listing, making this a patch-cycle rather than emergency-response priority for most organizations. That said, the C:H/I:H impact metrics are not overstated: a successful bypass yields full control over what the client believes is an authenticated LDAP session, enabling credential interception and directory data injection that can cascade into broader compromise in LDAP-integrated environments. The combination of ubiquitous library deployment and a specific high-value protocol makes this worth patching promptly, even though the real-world exploitation window is narrower than the raw score suggests.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with network adjacency to the path between a libcurl-based application and its LDAP server - achieved via ARP spoofing, rogue DNS, or physical access to a shared network segment - intercepts the SASL handshake and responds to the server's challenge with a synthetic early-completion message. libcurl misinterprets the truncated exchange as successful peer verification and proceeds with what it believes is a validated authenticated session, now fully controlled by the attacker. The attacker can then return crafted LDAP query responses, inject false directory entries (e.g., spoofed group memberships or credentials), or passively capture authentication tokens sent over the session. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv2 – Sep 08, 2026

libcurl's SASL state machine for LDAP authentication incorrectly treats an incomplete cryptographic handshake as a fully verified authentication exchange, allowing a Man-in-the-Middle attacker to inject a premature termination message that bypasses peer validation entirely. All curl releases from 7.82.0 through 8.21.0 are affected, spanning a multi-year release history documented in EUVD-2026-72164 and the curl project's own advisory. No public exploit code has been identified and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, though successful exploitation grants an attacker the ability to intercept LDAP credentials and inject falsified directory responses.

v1 Sep 02, 2026 - 12:16

OpenLDAP SASL authentication bypass in curl allows network-accessible exploitation when curl is used to connect to LDAP servers using SASL authentication, potentially granting unauthorized access to directory data without valid credentials. The flaw is patched in curl 8.22.0, released September 2, 2026, as part of a coordinated batch security release addressing ten separate curl vulnerabilities. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade curl/libcurl to a release newer than 8.21.0 as directed by the curl project's advisory at https://curl.se/docs/CVE-2026-13608.html; the exact patched release should be confirmed there, as 8.21.0 itself appears in the affected-version list and the fix version is ambiguous from the available input data. Downstream package maintainers for Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL, Alpine, and similar distributions should be monitored for patched builds. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, the most effective compensating control is to route LDAP traffic exclusively over LDAPS (port 636) with independently validated TLS certificates, which requires the MITM to also break TLS before reaching the SASL layer - substantially raising the attack bar. Alternatively, restrict LDAP connectivity to loopback or VPN-only paths where network interposition is not feasible. Applications using libcurl exclusively for non-LDAP protocols (HTTP, FTP, SMTP, etc.) are not affected by this code path and require no action beyond the standard upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details

libcurl is the C transfer library that underpins the curl command-line tool, providing LDAP protocol support among many other schemes. CWE-923 (Improper Restriction of Communication Channel to Intended Endpoints) identifies the root cause: the SASL (Simple Authentication and Security Layer) negotiation state machine fails to enforce completion of all mandatory challenge-response rounds before asserting mutual authentication success. LDAP's SASL-based mechanisms - such as GSSAPI, DIGEST-MD5, or PLAIN - require a sequenced multi-step exchange in which both parties confirm cryptographic proof of identity. If a peer signals completion prematurely (e.g., with an empty or early final SASL message), libcurl's logic accepts this as valid and proceeds with an ostensibly authenticated session. A MITM attacker exploits this by intercepting the handshake and replying with a synthetic completion token before the full exchange finishes, causing the client to believe it has verified a trusted server when it has not.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

libcurl versions 7.82.0-8.21.0 contain an LDAP authentication flaw allowing attackers on the network to bypass security controls and steal directory service credentials. Organizations relying on curl for LDAP authentication face credential compromise and potential unauthorized access to identity systems without network-layer defenses.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Enforce network segmentation to eliminate Man-in-the-Middle attack paths; require mutual TLS authentication with certificate pinning on all LDAP connections; disable curl's LDAP support in favor of native directory service clients if operationally feasible; monitor LDAP connection logs for unexpected certificate or peer changes.
