Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to first obtain the application's AUTH_KEY secret, used to sign authentication cookies via HMAC; without this key, the cookie fails validation before the injection path is reached. The vulnerable function User_Model::getUserDataByLogin() is invoked during cookie-based session validation on the network-accessible authentication endpoint, requiring no user interaction once the key is held. The injection is blind - query output is not returned to the caller - so attackers must use boolean-based or time-based inference, meaning exfiltration is slow and noisy. No non-default feature flags or platform-specific configuration are required beyond a standard Emlog Pro installation running any version prior to 2.6.16 with AUTH_KEY known to the attacker. The attack produces confidentiality impact only (C:H); integrity and availability are not affected by this injection path.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 base score of 4.9 with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N accurately reflects the constrained risk profile: network reachability and high confidentiality impact are genuine, but the PR:H designation captures the meaningful prerequisite of holding the AUTH_KEY application secret. Without that key, an attacker cannot generate a valid HMAC-signed cookie and cannot reach the injection path at all. This is not a low-barrier, mass-exploitable vulnerability - it requires a prior compromise of the application's configuration secret. EPSS data is absent from the input, and the vulnerability does not appear in CISA KEV, which is consistent with its constrained preconditions. No public proof-of-concept has been confirmed. Real-world risk is elevated primarily in deployments where AUTH_KEY is weak, shared across environments, or has already been exposed; operators running default or low-entropy keys face meaningfully higher exposure. The CVSS AC:L rating correctly reflects that, once the key is held, cookie forgery itself is computationally trivial.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has obtained the Emlog AUTH_KEY - for example from a leaked .env or configuration file, a misconfigured backup, or a previously compromised host - crafts an authentication cookie whose username field embeds a time-based or boolean-based blind SQL payload signed with the stolen key. The CMS validates the HMAC, passes the unsanitized value into getUserDataByLogin(), and the attacker iterates payloads to infer database contents character by character, ultimately recovering password hashes, email addresses, or other sensitive user records. No public exploit code is confirmed at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 04, 2026

Blind SQL injection in Emlog CMS Pro's User_Model::getUserDataByLogin() function allows a remote attacker who controls the application's AUTH_KEY to enumerate database contents via the authentication cookie validation path. The $account value read from the HMAC-signed cookie is interpolated directly into SQL with no sanitization; the HMAC guard, which requires AUTH_KEY to forge, is the sole access barrier before the vulnerable query executes. All Emlog Pro releases before 2.6.16 are affected; the vendor released a confirmed patch at the pro-2.6.16 tag. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Emlog Pro version 2.6.16, which contains the fix confirmed in commit 92b6eea618891b28ed0c520564dff26e170645b4 and available at https://github.com/emlog/emlog/releases/tag/pro-2.6.16. As an interim control for operators unable to patch immediately, rotating AUTH_KEY to a cryptographically strong random value of at least 32 bytes of entropy eliminates the ability to forge a valid HMAC-signed cookie and effectively blocks the injection path - this is a strong short-term mitigation but does not remediate the underlying injection bug and must be followed by patching. Additionally, restricting the CMS database account's privileges to the minimum tables required for operation limits the data an attacker can exfiltrate even if exploitation occurs; note that overly restricting DB privileges may break CMS functionality, so changes should be tested in staging first.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Emlog is a PHP-based open-source CMS and blogging platform (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:emlog:emlog). The vulnerable code is in include/model/user_model.php within User_Model::getUserDataByLogin(), where the $account parameter - extracted from the username field of the application's authentication cookie - is interpolated directly into a raw SQL query string without escaping (CWE-89: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements Used in an SQL Command). The authentication cookie is integrity-protected by an HMAC computed with the application's AUTH_KEY secret; an attacker must possess this key to craft a cookie that passes validation before the injection path is reached. The confirmed fix, in commit 92b6eea618891b28ed0c520564dff26e170645b4, adds a single $this->db->escape_string($account) call before query construction. Because no query output is rendered back to the caller, exploitation requires blind techniques (boolean-based or time-based inference) to extract data one bit at a time, limiting throughput but not ultimate reach.

DescriptionCVE.org

Emlog is an open source website building system. Prior to version 2.6.16, Emlog CMS Pro contains a blind SQL injection in User_Model::getUserDataByLogin(). The $account parameter is directly interpolated into SQL queries without any filtering. The vulnerability is reachable through the auth cookie validation path, where $username is extracted from the cookie and passed unfiltered into SQL - guarded only by an HMAC signature that requires AUTH_KEY to forge. This issue has been patched in version 2.6.16.
