DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in rpm. An attacker can exploit a command injection vulnerability by influencing the path or filename of a tarball processed by rpmbuild -t* to include shell metacharacters. This is particularly relevant in automated build or continuous integration (CI) workflows that ingest externally supplied artifact names. Successful exploitation allows for arbitrary command execution with the privileges of the build user, which could lead to information disclosure or disruption of the build environment.

AnalysisAI

Command injection in rpm's rpmbuild -t* subcommand allows arbitrary command execution with build-user privileges when an attacker controls the path or filename of a tarball being processed. The vulnerability arises because shell metacharacters in tarball names are not sanitized before being passed to a shell invocation inside rpmbuild. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that: (1) the victim system runs `rpmbuild` with the `-t`, `-ta`, `-tb`, or `-tp` flag; (2) the tarball path or filename argument is derived from externally supplied, attacker-controllable input (e.g., an uploaded artifact name or a user-provided URL path component); and (3) the externally supplied name is not sanitized of shell metacharacters before being passed to rpmbuild. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 7.8) accurately models the threat: an attacker with no system privileges supplies a maliciously named tarball, and a local build user must be socially engineered or automated (via CI/CD) into processing it. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Consult the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-84837 and apply the updated rpm-build package when Red Hat releases it; no specific patched version is confirmed in the available data. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours: Audit your CI/CD pipeline configuration to identify any automated build jobs that execute 'rpmbuild -t' commands against externally sourced or user-supplied tarballs and disable or isolate these workflows immediately. …
