Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires three concurrent conditions: (1) Apache Tomcat is configured to use DataSourceRealm as its authentication realm; (2) the application or Tomcat connector is configured to use CLIENT-CERT or SPNEGO as the authentication method - neither is the default for standard Tomcat deployments; (3) the attacker can present a valid client TLS certificate or obtain a valid Kerberos service ticket (requires access to the relevant PKI or Kerberos infrastructure). The authentication bypass is limited to users who do not exist in the datasource but can satisfy the transport-layer credential check. Exploitation is further constrained by the PR:L signal - the attacker is not completely unauthenticated; they require a valid credential artifact at the protocol level. Standard deployments using FORM, BASIC, or DIGEST auth with DataSourceRealm are NOT affected.

Impact

The vendor-assigned CVSS 8.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) reflects broad network reach and high impact, but AC:L likely overstates ease of exploitation: the flaw only manifests when Tomcat is explicitly configured with CLIENT-CERT or SPNEGO authentication AND DataSourceRealm - a non-default, operationally deliberate stack that requires infrastructure (PKI or Active Directory/Kerberos). This significantly narrows the real-world attack surface compared to the CVSS surface. EPSS at 0.26% (18th percentile) corroborates low automated exploitation probability. There is no CISA KEV entry and no known public POC. Taken together, this is a genuine, exploitable authentication bypass for organizations using the affected configuration, but it is not a mass-exploitation concern. Defenders using DataSourceRealm with CLIENT-CERT or SPNEGO should treat this as high priority; all others face negligible exposure.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a valid TLS client certificate (from any trusted CA, or a self-signed cert if Tomcat's trust anchor is misconfigured) or a valid Kerberos ticket presents credentials for a username that does not exist in the DataSourceRealm database. Tomcat completes the protocol handshake and issues an authenticated session for that non-existent principal, potentially granting access to protected application paths that rely on Realm-based role checks. No public POC has been identified, but the attack logic is straightforward once the configuration preconditions are met.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 26, 2026

Improper Authentication in Apache Tomcat allows a remote, low-privileged attacker to gain authenticated access to applications even when the presented identity does not exist in the configured DataSourceRealm. The flaw is triggered specifically under CLIENT-CERT or SPNEGO authentication schemes, causing Tomcat to grant a session to a non-existent user. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing is present at time of analysis, but the CVSS C:H/I:H impact rating reflects the potential to fully compromise protected application resources if exploited in matching deployments.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Apache Tomcat 11.0.25, 10.1.58, or 9.0.121 - these are the vendor-confirmed fixed releases. Users on EOL branches (8.5.x, 7.0.x) have no vendor-supported patch and should migrate to a supported major version. If immediate patching is not feasible, a targeted compensating control is to switch from DataSourceRealm to a realm implementation that does not exhibit this bypass under CLIENT-CERT/SPNEGO, such as JNDIRealm or a custom Realm with explicit existence enforcement, though this requires application-level testing. Alternatively, disabling CLIENT-CERT or SPNEGO authentication in favor of FORM or BASIC authentication eliminates the vulnerable code path entirely, at the cost of losing certificate-based or Kerberos SSO functionality. Technical ContextAI · show details

Apache Tomcat implements pluggable realm authentication via the Realm interface; DataSourceRealm authenticates users by querying a JDBC datasource. Under CLIENT-CERT (mutual TLS) and SPNEGO (Kerberos-based SSO) authentication flows, Tomcat performs certificate or ticket validation at the TLS/Kerberos layer before the Realm is consulted to verify the user identity exists and retrieve roles. CWE-287 (Improper Authentication) manifests here because the Realm's existence check for the principal can be bypassed or short-circuited under these two protocol paths, resulting in a valid session being issued for a principal that has no record in the datasource. Affected CPE covers org.apache.tomcat:tomcat across the 7.x, 8.5.x, 9.0.x, 10.1.x, and 11.0.x lines.

DescriptionCVE.org

Improper Authentication vulnerability in Apache Tomcat meant that in some circumstances (e.g. CLIENT-CERT, SPNEGO) that a user would be authenticated even if the user did not exist in the DataSourceRealm.

This issue affects Apache Tomcat: from 11.0.0-M1 through 11.0.24, from 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.57, from 9.0.0.M1 through 9.0.120.

The following versions were EOL at the time the CVE was created but are known to be affected: from 8.5.0 through 8.5.100, from 7.0.0 through 7.0.109. Other unsupported versions may also be affected.

Users are recommended to upgrade to version 11.0.25, 10.1.58 or 9.0.121, which fix the issue.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Apache Tomcat deployments using certificate-based or Kerberos authentication (CLIENT-CERT or SPNEGO) are vulnerable to an authentication bypass (CVE-2026-68569, CVSS 8.1) allowing attackers to gain unauthorized access to protected applications without valid credentials. No public exploit identified at time of analysis. This vulnerability poses significant risk to data confidentiality and application integrity for affected organizations, particularly those relying on these authentication methods for critical systems.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Restrict network access to Tomcat instances through firewall segmentation, limiting connections to trusted internal networks only. Disable CLIENT-CERT and SPNEGO authentication schemes if alternative authentication methods are viable. Implement detailed authentication logging and configure security monitoring to alert on session creation attempts for non-existent user accounts. Deploy a reverse proxy or API gateway to perform independent identity validation before requests reach Tomcat applications.
