3DescriptionCVE.org
In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, a user that holds a role with the schedule_search capability could run arbitrary Search Processing Language (SPL) commands with the highest level of system privilege and read every credential stored in the credential store, which can allow for disclosure and modification of all relevant data and affect system integrity and availability. The vulnerability is possible because scheduled search alert action configuration does not properly restrict user-specific alert action settings before the search scheduler runs alert actions. For more information see Create scheduled alerts (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/alert-and-respond/alerting-manual/9.3/create-alerts/create-scheduled-alerts), Set up alert actions (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/alert-and-respond/alerting-manual/9.3/configure-alert-actions/set-up-alert-actions), Define roles on the Splunk platform with capabilities (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/manage-users-and-security/10.4/manage-splunk-platform-users-and-roles/define-roles-on-the-splunk-platform-with-capabilities), and Configuration file precedence (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/admin-manual/10.2/administer-splunk-enterprise-with-configuration-files/configuration-file-precedence) in the Splunk documentation.
AnalysisAI
Privilege escalation in Splunk Enterprise allows an authenticated user holding the schedule_search capability to execute arbitrary SPL commands at the highest system privilege level and read every credential stored in the credential store. Affected versions span four supported release lines - below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14 - meaning a wide swath of unpatched deployments across all current branches are exposed. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires an authenticated Splunk Enterprise user holding a role with the schedule_search capability explicitly assigned - this capability is NOT granted by default to standard or viewer roles and must be deliberately included in a role definition by an administrator. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 8.8 score (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) reflects a network-accessible, low-complexity flaw requiring only low-privilege authentication - a meaningful but not insurmountable bar. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker with a Splunk account assigned a role that includes the schedule_search capability navigates to the scheduled search interface, creates a scheduled search, and crafts a manipulated alert action configuration that exploits the scheduler's failure to restrict user-specific settings, causing the search scheduler to execute arbitrary SPL commands at the highest system privilege level. Using that elevated SPL execution context, the attacker issues commands to read the Splunk credential store, extracting stored usernames and passwords for integrated data sources, forwarder tokens, and third-party service credentials. … |
| Remediation | Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to the patched versions: 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, or 9.4.14 depending on your release line, per vendor advisory SVD-2026-0801 at https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-0801. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours: Inventory all Splunk Enterprise deployments and identify instances running unpatched versions (9.4.x below 14, 10.0.x below 9, 10.2.x below 6, 10.4.x below 2); immediately audit and document all users with schedule_search capability assigned. …
