DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk SOAR versions below 8.6.0, a user who holds the "Incident Commander" Splunk SOAR role could store JavaScript in a note and run it in the browser of another user when that user opens the note. The stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability is possible because Splunk SOAR can treat existing note content as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) without sanitizing that content when the note format changes. The vulnerability requires the attacker to phish the affected user by tricking them into initiating a request within their browser. The user who holds the "Incident Commander" Splunk SOAR role should not be able to exploit the vulnerability at will. For more information see Manage roles and permissions in Splunk SOAR (Cloud) (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-soar/soar-cloud/administer-soar-cloud/manage-your-splunk-soar-cloud-users-and-accounts/manage-roles-and-permissions-in-splunk-soar-cloud) in the Splunk documentation.

AnalysisAI

Stored XSS in Splunk SOAR below 8.6.0 enables an authenticated 'Incident Commander' role user to inject JavaScript into a note, which executes in the browser of any user who subsequently opens it. The flaw stems from unsanitized HTML rendering triggered by a note format change, meaning content stored safely in one format becomes executable in another. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The attacker must hold the 'Incident Commander' Splunk SOAR role - a non-default role that must be explicitly assigned by an administrator (CVSS PR:H). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The vendor-provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) accurately reflects a tightly constrained attack surface: PR:H requires the Incident Commander role, AC:H captures the need for social engineering to trigger victim interaction, and UI:R requires the victim to open the note. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An internal user with the Incident Commander role crafts a note containing a JavaScript payload (e.g., a cookie-stealing script) and triggers the note format change that causes SOAR to render it as unsanitized HTML. The attacker then sends a phishing message to a higher-privilege user - such as a SOAR administrator - directing them to open the note; upon opening, the script executes in the victim's browser session, potentially exfiltrating authentication tokens or performing authenticated actions within SOAR on the victim's behalf.
Remediation Vendor-released patch: Splunk SOAR 8.6.0. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
