DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk SOAR versions below 8.6.0, a user who holds the "Automation Engineer" Splunk SOAR role could run arbitrary Structured Query Language (SQL) statements against the Splunk SOAR database through custom list retrieval in a playbook, allowing for create, read, update, and delete operations on all relevant data stored in the Splunk SOAR database. The SQL injection is possible because Splunk SOAR builds the custom list database lookup with the supplied list name instead of a bound SQL value. For more information see Manage roles and permissions in Splunk SOAR (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-soar/soar-cloud/administer-soar-cloud/manage-your-splunk-soar-cloud-users-and-accounts/manage-roles-and-permissions-in-splunk-soar-cloud) and Create custom lists for use in Splunk SOAR playbook comparisons (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-soar/soar-cloud/build-playbooks/manage-playbooks-and-playbook-settings/create-custom-lists-for-use-in-splunk-soar-cloud-playbook-comparisons) in the Splunk documentation.

AnalysisAI

SQL injection in Splunk SOAR below version 8.6.0 enables users holding the "Automation Engineer" role to execute arbitrary SQL statements against the SOAR database by embedding injection payloads in custom list names referenced within playbooks, granting full create, read, update, and delete access to all data the database contains. The root cause is unsanitized string concatenation: Splunk SOAR builds the custom list lookup query by inserting the user-supplied list name directly rather than using parameterized (bound) values, a textbook CWE-74 injection pattern. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to hold the explicitly granted "Automation Engineer" Splunk SOAR role - this role must be assigned by an administrator and is not available to standard or read-only users. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 6.5 (Medium) score with PR:H accurately captures the privilege barrier: exploitation requires the "Automation Engineer" role, which must be explicitly granted by an administrator and is not held by default users. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker with legitimate access to a Splunk SOAR instance who has been granted the "Automation Engineer" role crafts a playbook that references a custom list whose name contains a SQL injection payload - for example, a UNION-based query to extract stored credentials or API tokens from the SOAR database. When the playbook runs, Splunk SOAR inserts the malicious list name unsanitized into a SQL statement, causing the injected query to execute against the backend database and return sensitive data to the attacker or silently modify records such as audit logs or playbook definitions. …
Remediation Upgrade Splunk SOAR to version 8.6.0 or later, which resolves the vulnerability by replacing direct string interpolation with parameterized (bound) SQL values in the custom list database lookup path. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
