DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, a user with a high-privilege Splunk role that can manage search head clustering could use the search head cluster member bundle Representational State Transfer (REST) API to write files to locations that the user account running Splunk Enterprise can write to, which could allow for remote code execution. Successful exploitation could result in access to all relevant data and could affect the integrity and availability of the Splunk deployment. The vulnerability does not affect Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4. The vulnerability is possible because the search head cluster member bundle REST API does not enforce the expected authorization boundary and does not validate bundle paths before accepting bundle content. For more information see Using the REST API reference (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/rest-api-reference/10.2/introduction/using-the-rest-api-reference), About configuring role-based user access (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/manage-users-and-security/10.2/manage-splunk-platform-users-and-roles/about-configuring-role-based-user-access), and About distributed search (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/distributed-search/9.4/overview-of-distributed-search/about-distributed-search) in the Splunk documentation.

AnalysisAI

Remote code execution in Splunk Enterprise 10.4.x allows a high-privilege user with search head cluster (SHC) management rights to write files to arbitrary locations accessible by the Splunk service account via the SHC member bundle REST API. The API fails to enforce authorization boundaries and does not validate bundle paths before accepting content, enabling path-traversal-style writes that can deliver and trigger malicious payloads. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires an authenticated Splunk account holding a high-privilege Splunk role that specifically grants the ability to manage search head clustering (the 'can_srchhead_cluster_manage' or equivalent capability). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.0 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:L) reflects that exploitation requires high privileges (PR:H), which significantly constrains the attacker population to insiders, compromised admin accounts, or privilege-escalated sessions. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker who has obtained or possesses a Splunk account with a high-privilege role that includes search head cluster management rights authenticates to the Splunk REST API over the network and submits a crafted bundle archive containing a path-traversed payload path. The server writes the malicious file - such as a web shell or a Splunk app configuration that executes OS commands - to a location writable by the Splunk daemon, and the attacker subsequently triggers execution by referencing the written file through a legitimate Splunk mechanism. …
Remediation Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to version 10.4.2 or later, which resolves the path validation defect in the SHC member bundle REST API per vendor advisory SVD-2026-0801 (https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-0801). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
