FreePBX is an open source IP PBX. From 17.0.5.34 until 17.0.11, the publicKeySave AJAX endpoint in Backup.class.php accepts an authenticated administrator's SSH public key and appends it to /home/asterisk/.ssh/authorized_keys for the asterisk system user without reliably enforcing backup-only command and source restrictions. The key grants persistent shell access that can execute arbitrary commands, access FreePBX and call data, modify system files, and disrupt services. This issue is fixed in version 17.0.11.
AnalysisAI
SSH key injection in FreePBX versions 17.0.5.34 through 17.0.10.x allows authenticated administrators to escalate from web application control to persistent OS-level shell access on the underlying host. The publicKeySave AJAX endpoint in Backup.class.php appends caller-supplied SSH public keys to /home/asterisk/.ssh/authorized_keys without reliably enforcing backup-only command restrictions or source IP constraints, granting the asterisk OS user unrestricted interactive shell access. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires an active authenticated session with FreePBX administrator privileges (CVSS PR:H confirmed). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.6 (PR:H) accurately reflects that this vulnerability requires existing authenticated administrator access to the FreePBX web interface, which is the primary limiting factor on its real-world impact. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker who has obtained FreePBX administrator credentials - through phishing, credential stuffing, or insider access - sends a crafted POST request to the publicKeySave AJAX endpoint with their own SSH public key as the payload. The endpoint appends the key to /home/asterisk/.ssh/authorized_keys without a forced-command restriction, after which the attacker opens an SSH session directly to the host as the asterisk user, establishing persistent OS-level access independent of the FreePBX web session. … |
| Remediation | The primary fix is to upgrade FreePBX to version 17.0.11, which resolves the improper key handling in Backup.class.php per the vendor's own security advisory at https://github.com/FreePBX/security-reporting/security/advisories/GHSA-24w6-hpg3-rwfg. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, identify all FreePBX installations running versions 17.0.5.34-17.0.10.x, immediately restrict administrative web access to essential personnel, and audit /home/asterisk/.ssh/authorized_keys for unauthorized keys and recent SSH logs for suspicious activity. …
