MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an active authenticated session with FreePBX administrator privileges (CVSS PR:H confirmed). The target must be running FreePBX version 17.0.5.34 through 17.0.10.x. The publicKeySave AJAX endpoint within the Backup module must be reachable, which is the default state in affected installations - no non-default configuration is required to expose it. SSH access to the host must also be network-reachable for post-exploitation shell use, though the key injection itself only requires HTTP/HTTPS access to the admin panel. Exploitation is limited by the requirement for prior administrator-level authentication; unauthenticated or low-privileged users cannot trigger this endpoint. No user interaction beyond the attacker's own admin session is needed. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.6 (PR:H) accurately reflects that this vulnerability requires existing authenticated administrator access to the FreePBX web interface, which is the primary limiting factor on its real-world impact. However, this should not be dismissed - administrator credentials are frequently shared, reused, or phished in SMB and managed-service-provider environments, meaning even a mid-sized municipal IT team in sopot operating a self-hosted FreePBX deployment should treat this as urgent given the severity of post-exploitation capability. The key risk amplifier is the privilege escalation dimension: an attacker who holds FreePBX admin credentials gains persistent, unrestricted OS shell access as the asterisk system user, which can be leveraged to exfiltrate call records, intercept VoIP traffic, pivot within the local network, or achieve persistence independent of the FreePBX application layer. EPSS data was not included in available intelligence, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. KEV status is not confirmed; no POC has been identified. The absence of special deployment conditions beyond admin authentication (the endpoint is present by default in affected versions) means any unpatched, internet-exposed FreePBX admin panel represents a meaningful risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained FreePBX administrator credentials - through phishing, credential stuffing, or insider access - sends a crafted POST request to the publicKeySave AJAX endpoint with their own SSH public key as the payload. The endpoint appends the key to /home/asterisk/.ssh/authorized_keys without a forced-command restriction, after which the attacker opens an SSH session directly to the host as the asterisk user, establishing persistent OS-level access independent of the FreePBX web session. No public proof-of-concept has been identified, but the attack is technically straightforward for anyone with admin credentials. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 13, 2026
SSH key injection in FreePBX versions 17.0.5.34 through 17.0.10.x allows authenticated administrators to escalate from web application control to persistent OS-level shell access on the underlying host. The publicKeySave AJAX endpoint in Backup.class.php appends caller-supplied SSH public keys to /home/asterisk/.ssh/authorized_keys without reliably enforcing backup-only command restrictions or source IP constraints, granting the asterisk OS user unrestricted interactive shell access. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis; a vendor-released patch is available in version 17.0.11.
RemediationAI
The primary fix is to upgrade FreePBX to version 17.0.11, which resolves the improper key handling in Backup.class.php per the vendor's own security advisory at https://github.com/FreePBX/security-reporting/security/advisories/GHSA-24w6-hpg3-rwfg. If immediate patching is not possible, administrators should audit /home/asterisk/.ssh/authorized_keys for any keys that lack forced-command and from= source restrictions, and remove or restrict those entries. As a compensating control, restrict access to the FreePBX administrative web interface to trusted IP ranges only via firewall or reverse-proxy ACLs - this reduces the attack surface to hosts that can reach the admin panel. Additionally, enforce strong, unique credentials and multi-factor authentication for all FreePBX administrator accounts to raise the bar for the prerequisite admin access. Note that restricting the admin panel may impact legitimate remote administration workflows.

Technical ContextAI · show details
FreePBX is a web-based GUI and provisioning framework layered atop the Asterisk open-source telephony engine, widely deployed for enterprise and SMB VoIP. The vulnerable component is Backup.class.php, which exposes a publicKeySave AJAX endpoint intended to facilitate SSH key-based backup operations. In legitimate use, keys added to authorized_keys for backup should include SSH forced-command directives (command=) and source restrictions (from=) to limit what the key can do. The root cause - CWE-269 Improper Privilege Management - is the endpoint's failure to reliably inject these constraints before appending the caller-supplied key, meaning the resulting authorized_keys entry permits full interactive shell sessions as the asterisk OS user rather than constrained backup-only access. The attack surface is a PHP AJAX handler reachable over the network by any authenticated admin session.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
FreePBX is an open source IP PBX. From 17.0.5.34 until 17.0.11, the publicKeySave AJAX endpoint in Backup.class.php accepts an authenticated administrator's SSH public key and appends it to /home/asterisk/.ssh/authorized_keys for the asterisk system user without reliably enforcing backup-only command and source restrictions. The key grants persistent shell access that can execute arbitrary commands, access FreePBX and call data, modify system files, and disrupt services. This issue is fixed in version 17.0.11.
Executive ViewAI
FreePBX telephony systems (versions 17.0.5.34-17.0.10.x) contain a privilege escalation vulnerability enabling authenticated administrators to gain unrestricted OS-level access to the underlying host system. This allows attackers with legitimate administrative credentials to achieve persistent unauthorized control independent of the PBX application. Organizations using these versions face potential compromise of voice infrastructure and extended unauthorized system access.
