Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a valid authenticated Kibana session - the CVSS vector PR:L confirms that low-privilege credentials are sufficient and no elevated account is needed. The attacker does NOT need Security Solution privileges, endpoint response action privileges, or any Elasticsearch index-level privileges on the underlying data. The vulnerability is specific to the internal data retrieval capability backing Elastic Defend endpoint response actions; Kibana deployments that do not use Elastic Defend or have no enrolled managed endpoints will have no sensitive endpoint response data to disclose, reducing practical impact to near zero in those environments. Exploitation is bounded to reading endpoint response action records and host response content - no write, delete, command execution, or lateral movement capability is exposed. No user interaction is required beyond the attacker possessing their own valid Kibana account.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 score of 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) accurately reflects a network-exploitable, low-complexity authorization bypass requiring only a valid low-privileged account with no special configuration or user interaction needed. The confidentiality impact is rated High because endpoint response action records may contain sensitive forensic artifacts, host command outputs, and security telemetry returned from managed endpoints - data that defenders explicitly intended to restrict. No EPSS score was provided in available intelligence, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from that signal. No KEV listing and no public POC exist at time of analysis, suggesting exploitation is theoretical or unreported. The barrier to exploitation is low for any Kibana account holder, making this a meaningful real priority in multi-tenant or shared Kibana deployments where privilege separation between Security analysts and general users is a key architectural assumption - the vulnerability directly undermines that model. S:U (no scope change) is consistent with impact being limited to Kibana-managed endpoint data rather than broader Elasticsearch index access or direct host compromise.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated Kibana user holding only a low-privilege reporting or developer role - with no Security Solution, endpoint, or Elasticsearch index privileges - directly calls the internal endpoint response action data retrieval API with their valid session token. The internal service processes the request with its own elevated permissions rather than validating the caller's role assignments, returning endpoint response action records and host-returned forensic content the user is explicitly unauthorized to see. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the exploit requires only knowledge of the internal API path and a valid Kibana session token.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 13, 2026

Missing authorization in Kibana's internal data retrieval capability for Elastic Defend endpoint response actions exposes sensitive security telemetry to any authenticated low-privileged user. The internal API endpoint used for endpoint response actions bypasses the Security Solution and endpoint privilege checks applied to its user-facing equivalents, executing with elevated internal permissions rather than the requesting user's permissions. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing exists at time of analysis; however, any authenticated Kibana user - regardless of Security Solution role assignments - can exploit this to read endpoint response records and host-returned response content from managed endpoints.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Kibana to the patched versions referenced in Elastic security advisory ESA-2026-102 at https://discuss.elastic.co/t/kibana-8-19-19-9-3-8-9-4-4-security-update-esa-2026-102/389513 - the advisory URL slug suggests fixes in the 8.x line (approximately 8.19.x) and the 9.x line (approximately 9.3.8 and 9.4.4), but exact minimum safe versions must be confirmed from the advisory before applying patches. As a compensating control pending upgrade, restrict Kibana authentication at the network perimeter or identity provider layer so that only users who legitimately require Security Solution access can log in to the Kibana instance, reducing the pool of potential exploiters; note this trades broader Kibana usability for risk reduction and does not remediate the underlying authorization flaw. Additionally, review Kibana audit logs for unexpected access to endpoint response action APIs from accounts that do not hold Security Solution roles, which would indicate exploitation attempts.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Kibana is Elastic's web-based interface for querying, visualizing, and managing Elasticsearch data. Elastic Defend is its endpoint detection and response (EDR) product; its response actions allow Security analysts to retrieve forensic data and take remediation steps on managed hosts. The affected internal capability is a CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) defect: a backend API endpoint performs data retrieval using elevated internal service permissions ('ambient authority') rather than the permissions of the authenticated requesting user. This is a textbook CAPEC-1 pattern - a backend pathway enforces fewer access controls than the user-facing UI routes that expose the same functionality. The root cause is that the internal capability was not wired to the same Security Solution and endpoint privilege checks that gate the user-facing equivalents. The CPE string cpe:2.3:a:elastic:kibana:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates all Kibana versions are considered affected until the patched releases.

DescriptionCVE.org

Missing Authorization (CWE-862) in Kibana can lead to information disclosure via Accessing Functionality Not Properly Constrained by ACLs (CAPEC-1). An internal Kibana data retrieval capability used by Elastic Defend endpoint response actions did not enforce the Security Solution and endpoint privileges that its user-facing equivalents require, and it retrieved data with elevated internal permissions rather than the permissions of the requesting user. As a result, an authenticated low-privileged Kibana user with no Security Solution privileges, endpoint privileges and no Elasticsearch privileges on the underlying data, could read endpoint response action records and the corresponding response content returned by managed hosts.
