CRITICAL 9.2

DescriptionCVE.org

rsync before 3.5.0 contains multiple command and argument injection vulnerabilities that allow attackers to execute arbitrary commands by supplying malicious input through several code paths, including the RSYNC_CONNECT_PROG environment variable, daemon hooks, the rsync-ssl wrapper, and remote-shell command newline injection. Attackers can inject shell metacharacters or newline characters into unsanitized user-supplied values such as hostnames and hostspecs to execute arbitrary commands under the privileges of the rsync process or the invoking user.

AnalysisAI

Arbitrary command execution in rsync before 3.5.0 arises from multiple unsanitized code paths - the RSYNC_CONNECT_PROG environment variable, daemon hooks, the rsync-ssl wrapper, and remote-shell newline injection - that let an attacker who controls hostnames, hostspecs, or related input inject shell metacharacters or newlines and run commands as the rsync process or invoking user. VulnCheck reported the cluster of CWE-78 flaws, which are fixed together in the major security release v3.5.0. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and the issue is not on CISA KEV, but the CVSS 4.0 base score of 9.2 reflects full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.

Technical ContextAI

rsync is a file-synchronization and transfer utility whose client can spawn helper programs and remote shells to reach targets over SSH, a daemon, or a stunnel-based SSL wrapper. The root cause is CWE-78 (OS Command Injection): user-influenced values such as hostnames and hostspecs are passed into command construction without sanitizing shell metacharacters or newlines. Concretely, the RSYNC_CONNECT_PROG variable and daemon hooks are expanded through a shell, the rsync-ssl wrapper builds an stunnel command line from the target host, and remote-shell argument assembly permits newline injection - each turning attacker-controlled text into additional commands or arguments. Affected code is the upstream rsyncproject/rsync package (CPE cpe:2.3:a:rsyncproject:rsync) at all versions prior to 3.5.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to rsync 3.5.0 or later, which fixes all of the reported command- and argument-injection paths together (Vendor-released patch: 3.5.0); see https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0 and the advisory https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/security/advisories/GHSA-5hcf-7xxm-rmqq, and apply the corresponding distribution package update where available. Until patched, avoid passing untrusted or externally-derived hostnames and hostspecs into rsync, and unset or hard-code the RSYNC_CONNECT_PROG environment variable so it cannot be attacker-influenced (side effect: breaks any legitimate proxy-connect setup relying on it). If you use rsync-ssl, restrict its use to fixed, trusted target hosts rather than dynamic input, and validate that host arguments contain no shell metacharacters or newline characters before invocation (side effect: stricter input validation may reject unusual but legitimate hostnames). For rsync daemon deployments, review and lock down daemon hook configuration so hook commands are not built from client-supplied values.
