Local attack (AV:L), low complexity to pre-position symlink (AC:L), low privileges sufficient (PR:L); scope unchanged because the elevated context belongs to rsync's own runtime, not a separate component.

DescriptionCVE.org

rsync before 3.5.0 contains a symlink following vulnerability that allows local attackers to overwrite arbitrary files by placing a symlink at a predictable output path such as --log-file, --write-batch, or daemon-mode log and statistics paths. Attackers can exploit rsync's failure to reject symlinks during ancillary file writes to redirect output to arbitrary filesystem locations, achieving local privilege escalation on installations where rsync runs with elevated privileges such as setuid or privileged daemon configurations.

AnalysisAI

Symlink following in rsync before 3.5.0 enables local privilege escalation by allowing a low-privileged attacker to redirect ancillary file writes - such as log files, batch files, or daemon statistics - to arbitrary filesystem locations. Affected installations are those where rsync executes with elevated privileges, specifically setuid binaries or privileged daemon configurations, making the impact proportional to how widely such configurations are deployed. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Gain local user access
Delivery
Identify predictable rsync ancillary output path (log/batch/stats)
Exploit
Place symlink at that path targeting sensitive privileged file
Execution
Trigger elevated rsync execution (setuid binary or daemon)
Persist
Rsync follows symlink, writes to attacker-chosen target
Impact
Overwrite or inject into privileged file for escalation

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires: (1) local, authenticated access to the target system (AV:L, PR:L per CVSS 4.0); (2) rsync must be installed as a setuid binary or running as a privileged daemon (root or equivalent) - standard non-elevated invocations do not expose a privilege escalation path; (3) the attacker must be able to create a symlink at the predictable ancillary output path (e.g., --log-file, --write-batch, daemon log or statistics paths) before rsync opens it for writing, which may involve a race condition or requires the path to not yet exist. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) scores 8.5, reflecting a low-complexity local attack requiring only minimal (low) privileges with no user interaction. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario A local user on a server running rsync as a setuid binary determines the predictable path used by rsync for its --log-file output (e.g., /var/log/rsync.log), removes or races the file, and places a symlink at that path pointing to /etc/passwd or an authorized_keys file. When rsync next executes - triggered by a cron job, an administrative script, or the attacker's own invocation - rsync follows the symlink and writes log output to the attacker-chosen target, corrupting or injecting content into a privileged file and facilitating privilege escalation. …
Remediation Upgrade rsync to version 3.5.0 or later; this is the vendor-confirmed fix as documented at https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0 and in the security advisory https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/security/advisories/GHSA-g9f4-7q66-9582. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
