The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated Flowise user (PR:L) with access to the /api/v1/node-custom-function endpoint who can supply a custom function referencing the bundled Puppeteer library and control the executablePath and args passed to puppeteer.launch(). On versions 3.0.8-3.1.2 the ALLOW_BUILTIN_DEP=true environment variable must be enabled (non-default), which limits exposure on those releases; versions earlier than 3.0.8 require no such setting and are exploitable by default. Impact is maximized on the official Docker image, where the process runs as root. Limiting factors: valid credentials/role granting custom-function access, and for recent versions the non-default ALLOW_BUILTIN_DEP flag; no user interaction is required.

Impact

The signals are strongly aligned toward high real-world risk. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity attack needing only low-privilege authentication and no user interaction, with High vulnerable-system and subsequent-system impact across confidentiality, integrity, and availability (VC/VI/VA and SC/SI/SA all High), producing a 9.4 score consistent with full host compromise via sandbox escape. There is no KEV listing and no EPSS score in the provided data, so widespread active exploitation is not confirmed - treat this as no public exploit identified at time of analysis rather than exploited-in-the-wild. The one meaningful nuance is the PR:L requirement plus, for 3.0.8-3.1.2, the non-default ALLOW_BUILTIN_DEP=true gate; earlier versions are exploitable by default, which raises priority for older deployments. Given root execution in the official Docker image and a network vector, this is a genuine high priority for any internet- or multi-tenant-exposed Flowise instance, not a high-CVSS-but-low-impact artifact.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a low-privilege authenticated Flowise account submits a custom function via /api/v1/node-custom-function that calls puppeteer.launch() with a chosen executablePath and args, causing child_process.spawn() to run an arbitrary binary as the Flowise (root) user. From there they execute OS commands to establish a foothold or read sensitive host files through Chromium's file:// handling. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, but the low attack complexity and network vector make weaponization straightforward.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 13, 2026

Remote command execution in Flowise <= 3.1.2 lets an authenticated user break out of the vm2/@flowiseai/nodevm JavaScript sandbox by abusing the /api/v1/node-custom-function endpoint. By passing attacker-controlled executablePath and args into puppeteer.launch(), the code reaches child_process.spawn() outside the sandbox, yielding arbitrary OS command execution as the Flowise process user (root in the official Docker image) and host file disclosure via Chromium's file:// handling. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, but a vendor security advisory (GHSA-9gvv-qjj3-2p6g) and VulnCheck confirm the flaw; the CVSS 4.0 base score is 9.4.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Flowise 3.1.3 or later (Vendor-released patch: 3.1.3), which closes the sandbox escape; this is the primary and recommended fix per GHSA-9gvv-qjj3-2p6g. If immediate patching is not possible on 3.0.8-3.1.2, set or leave ALLOW_BUILTIN_DEP=false (its default) to prevent sandboxed code from reaching the bundled Puppeteer dependency - note this disables use of built-in dependencies inside custom functions and may break workflows that legitimately rely on them. Additionally, restrict who can reach the /api/v1/node-custom-function endpoint by tightening authentication and role assignments and placing Flowise behind network access controls, since any low-privilege authenticated user can trigger the flaw; avoid running the container as root by overriding the Docker user to limit blast radius if exploited. Review the vendor advisory (https://github.com/FlowiseAI/Flowise/security/advisories/GHSA-9gvv-qjj3-2p6g) and VulnCheck writeup (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/flowise-before-sandbox-escape-via-puppeteer) for full details.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Flowise is a low-code builder for LLM/agent workflows built on Node.js; its Custom Function / custom tool nodes execute user-supplied JavaScript inside the vm2-derived @flowiseai/nodevm sandbox. The root cause is CWE-78 (OS Command Injection): sandboxed code can reference the bundled Puppeteer library, and puppeteer.launch() accepts executablePath and args that are ultimately handed to Node's child_process.spawn(). Because spawn runs in the host Node runtime rather than inside the VM boundary, the sandbox provides no containment for the spawned browser/binary, and Chromium's file:// URL handling additionally allows reading arbitrary host files. The affected code lives in the flowise and flowise-components packages (CPE cpe:2.3:a:flowiseai:flowise). vm2-class sandboxes have a long history of escapes via host objects leaked into the guest, and this bug is a concrete instance where a legitimately exposed API (Puppeteer) provides the escape primitive.

DescriptionCVE.org

Flowise (packages flowise and flowise-components) in versions <= 3.1.2 contain a sandbox escape in the vm2/@flowiseai/nodevm JavaScript sandbox. An authenticated user with access to the /api/v1/node-custom-function endpoint can escape the sandbox by supplying attacker-controlled executablePath and args parameters to puppeteer.launch(), which internally invokes child_process.spawn() outside the sandbox boundary. This allows execution of arbitrary OS commands as the Flowise process user (root in the official Docker image) and arbitrary host file disclosure via Chromium's file:// URL handling. In versions 3.0.8-3.1.2 exploitation requires ALLOW_BUILTIN_DEP=true; earlier versions are exploitable by default. Fixed in 3.1.3.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Flowise versions 3.1.2 and earlier contain a critical remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2026-73483, CVSS 9.4) that allows authenticated users to execute arbitrary operating system commands with root privileges, particularly in containerized deployments. An attacker exploiting this flaw could gain complete control of the Flowise server, access sensitive data, and pivot to other systems on the network. With no vendor patch currently available, this poses an urgent operational and security risk requiring immediate action.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict network and API access to the /api/v1/node-custom-function endpoint via firewall or reverse proxy; disable the custom-function feature if not essential to business operations; refactor Flowise deployments to run as non-root user accounts; implement container escape mitigations using seccomp, SELinux, or AppArmor to constrain impact of successful exploitation; enable comprehensive logging and monitoring on all custom-function endpoint access; implement network segmentation to isolate Flowise infrastructure from sensitive systems and production data.
