| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target application uses openapi3filter.ValidationHandler as its authentication enforcement point for routes carrying OpenAPI security requirements (API key, OAuth, or other scheme) AND that the developer left the ValidationHandler.AuthenticationFunc field unset, causing the vulnerable Load() default. When those conditions hold, no further prerequisites exist: a remote, unauthenticated attacker sending a normal HTTP request to a protected route is enough, and the fail-closed ErrAuthenticationServiceMissing path is bypassed. What LIMITS exploitation: the flaw does not apply if the application sets a real AuthenticationFunc, enforces auth in a separate middleware layer, defines no security requirements in its spec, or does not use ValidationHandler at all - so exposure is a function of this specific middleware misuse, not of merely importing the library. |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N (9.1) reflects a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated bypass with high confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact - internally consistent for an auth-bypass class. The critical nuance the raw score understates is a deployment precondition: the flaw only manifests when an application actually relies on ValidationHandler for security enforcement AND omits setting AuthenticationFunc, in which case the insecure default silently applies. There is no EPSS score, no SSVC decision data, and no POC or KEV signal in the provided input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified; absence of a POC is not evidence of low risk here because triggering requires only a normal unauthenticated HTTP request to a protected route. This is a genuine priority for the subset of downstream Go services that use this middleware as their gate, but it is not a mass-exploitable single-endpoint bug like a public-facing appliance RCE - real-world exposure depends on how many deployments use ValidationHandler for enforcement, which is unknown from the data. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker identifies a Go service whose OpenAPI spec marks certain routes as requiring an API key or OAuth token but which uses ValidationHandler without a configured AuthenticationFunc. The attacker sends an ordinary HTTP request to a protected endpoint with no credentials; the no-op auth callback approves the request and the protected handler executes, returning or modifying data that should have required authentication. No POC is published, but the attack requires only a standard unauthenticated request given the AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N vector. |

Authentication bypass in the kin-openapi Go library (getkin/kin-openapi) before 0.144.0 lets unauthenticated remote attackers reach protected routes when an application uses openapi3filter.ValidationHandler as its enforcement middleware without explicitly setting an AuthenticationFunc. Because Load() silently substitutes a no-op callback for a nil AuthenticationFunc, every OpenAPI security requirement is treated as satisfied and the fail-closed guard is never reached. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and it is not in CISA KEV, but the flaw is fail-open by default, disclosed with source-level detail in GHSA-r277-6w6q-xmqw, and carries a vendor CVSS of 9.1.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade the github.com/getkin/kin-openapi module to v0.144.0 (fix commit f0407d53b0730280266f454b755010e7eeb985da; release https://github.com/getkin/kin-openapi/releases/tag/v0.144.0). After upgrading, note a behavioral change: ValidationHandler no longer defaults AuthenticationFunc to a no-op, so an unset field now returns ErrAuthenticationServiceMissing on any route with security requirements - you must explicitly implement and assign an AuthenticationFunc that validates the relevant API key, OAuth token, or other scheme (or deliberately assign NoopAuthenticationFunc only where anonymous access is intended). If you cannot upgrade immediately, the compensating control is to explicitly set a real AuthenticationFunc on every ValidationHandler even on the vulnerable version, which closes the bypass; alternatively enforce authentication in a separate upstream middleware layer rather than relying on ValidationHandler, accepting the trade-off of duplicated security logic. Review advisory GHSA-r277-6w6q-xmqw for details.

Technical ContextAI · show details
kin-openapi is a widely used Go toolkit (module github.com/getkin/kin-openapi, CPE cpe:2.3:a:getkin:kin-openapi) for parsing, validating, and routing against OpenAPI 3 specifications. The affected component, openapi3filter.ValidationHandler, is an HTTP middleware that validates incoming requests against a loaded spec, including its declared security requirements. The root cause is CWE-287 (Improper Authentication): ValidationHandler.Load() (validation_handler.go:47-49) unconditionally replaces a nil AuthenticationFunc with NoopAuthenticationFunc, a stub that returns nil without checking any credential. During request handling, ValidateRequest (validate_request.go:436-438) is designed to return ErrAuthenticationServiceMissing when the AuthenticationFunc is nil - a fail-closed path - but because the field is now populated with the no-op rather than left nil, that guard never triggers and each security scheme check silently passes. The fix (commit f0407d53) removes the default substitution so an unset AuthenticationFunc once again produces ErrAuthenticationServiceMissing.

2DescriptionCVE.org
kin-openapi is a Go project for handling OpenAPI files. Prior to 0.144.0, ValidationHandler.Load() in openapi3filter/validation_handler.go silently replaces a nil AuthenticationFunc with NoopAuthenticationFunc, which returns nil without checking credentials. This substitution causes every OpenAPI security requirement to be satisfied for unauthenticated requests when an application relies on ValidationHandler as its enforcement middleware. The no-op callback prevents the fail-closed ErrAuthenticationServiceMissing path from being reached and forwards the request to protected handlers that may require an API key, OAuth token, or another security scheme. This issue is fixed in version 0.144.0.
Executive ViewAI
The widely-deployed kin-openapi Go library contains a critical authentication bypass affecting API protection across many services. When used without explicit AuthenticationFunc configuration, the library silently disables all OpenAPI security requirements, allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to access protected endpoints. Organizations using this library face immediate risk of unauthorized data access and API manipulation.
Apply vendor patch. As immediate mitigation pending deployment, explicitly configure AuthenticationFunc in ValidationHandler initialization.
