Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires network reachability to a SiYuan instance (before v3.7.4) that exposes the publish API, and at least one encrypted notebook that is currently in the unlocked state - the description specifies retrieval from 'unlocked encrypted notebooks,' so a notebook that remains locked is not exposed. No authentication, credentials, key material, or user interaction is needed (PR:N/UI:N), and default configuration treats the encrypted notebook as publicly accessible. The primary limiting factors are that the publish endpoint must be reachable by the attacker (instances bound to localhost or behind an authenticating proxy/VPN are not directly exploitable) and that the target encrypted notebook must be unlocked at the time of access.

Impact

This is a genuine high-priority confidentiality risk, not merely an inflated CVSS number. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated attack with no user interaction, and the impact metrics (VC:H, SC:H) reflect complete confidentiality loss including a scope-changing effect on the encrypted subsystem - consistent with the description of full decrypted-content exposure. The 9.2 score is credible given the trivial preconditions. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified and there is no confirmed active exploitation; the value of the target (private/encrypted notes) makes it attractive but exploitation requires the specific condition that an encrypted notebook is currently unlocked and publishing is reachable. Integrity and availability are unaffected (VI:N/VA:N), so this is a read-only disclosure issue.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can reach a victim's SiYuan instance over the network browses the publish API and enumerates notebooks, including one that is encrypted but currently unlocked. Without providing credentials or the encryption key, the attacker requests the notebook's documents and receives them in fully decrypted form, harvesting private notes. Given AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N this requires only HTTP access with no special tooling, though no public POC is currently identified.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 12, 2026

Anonymous information disclosure in SiYuan before v3.7.4 lets unauthenticated remote readers retrieve fully decrypted content from encrypted notebooks. Because the publish API treats encrypted notebooks as publicly accessible by default, any anonymous visitor can enumerate and read documents from an unlocked encrypted notebook without authentication or knowledge of the encryption key. Reported by VulnCheck and rated CVSS 4.0 9.2; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and it is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to SiYuan v3.7.4 or later, which corrects the publish access-control check for encrypted notebooks; see GHSA-v684-q882-jgmq. Until the upgrade is applied, keep encrypted notebooks locked rather than left unlocked, since exposure occurs when an encrypted notebook is in the unlocked state. As additional compensating controls, disable the publish feature entirely if it is not required, or restrict network access to the SiYuan instance and its publish endpoint (for example bind to localhost or place it behind an authenticating reverse proxy / VPN and block direct public exposure). The trade-off is that disabling publish or restricting access removes intended sharing functionality, so scope these controls to instances that do not rely on legitimate public publishing.

Technical ContextAI · show details

SiYuan is a self-hosted, open-source personal knowledge-management and note-taking application that supports a 'publish' mode for exposing selected content over HTTP. The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the publish API does not evaluate whether a notebook's encrypted/private status should restrict publish access, so it applies a permissive default that treats encrypted notebooks as publicly readable. Critically, once an encrypted notebook is unlocked in the running instance, the notebook content is available in decrypted form server-side, and the publish endpoint serves that decrypted content rather than enforcing the notebook's access controls or requiring key material. The affected package per NVD is cpe:2.3:a:siyuan-note:siyuan (all versions prior to 3.7.4).

DescriptionCVE.org

SiYuan before v3.7.4 fails to properly validate publish access for encrypted notebooks, treating them as publicly accessible by default. Anonymous readers can enumerate and retrieve fully decrypted document content from unlocked encrypted notebooks through the publish API without authentication or key material.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

SiYuan before version 3.7.4 exposes encrypted notebook content to unauthenticated internet users through the publish API, allowing any visitor to retrieve fully decrypted sensitive documents without credentials or encryption keys. This represents a complete bypass of the application's encryption security model; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis. Organizations using SiYuan for confidential documentation face immediate and severe risk of unauthorized data breach.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

Disable the publish API entirely until patch is available; implement network-level access controls (VPN, IP whitelisting, firewall rules) to restrict deployment to authenticated access only; relocate encrypted notebooks to air-gapped or offline storage; review and audit access logs for unauthorized activity.
