| Exploitation Conditions | The victim must be running electerm prior to version 3.15.120 and must initiate a recursive file download from an attacker-controlled FTP or SFTP server. No special electerm configuration is required - the vulnerability exists in the default recursive transfer behavior. Exploitation is bounded by the need for user interaction (CVSS UI:R): the victim must actively connect to and download from the malicious server, ruling out fully automated mass exploitation (SSVC Automatable: no). The attacker requires no credentials on the victim's system (CVSS PR:N) and no prior foothold - only the ability to present a malicious server. Limiting factors include the social engineering prerequisite and the requirement that the victim uses electerm's file transfer feature rather than just the terminal; users who never download files via FTP/SFTP in electerm are not exposed. |
| Impact | The CVSS 8.1 score (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H) reflects high integrity and availability impact with no special attack complexity beyond convincing the victim to download from a malicious server. SSVC corroborates this with 'Technical Impact: total' but also flags 'Automatable: no', consistent with UI:R - exploitation cannot be scripted without social engineering or a compromised legitimate server. SSVC 'Exploitation: none' aligns with the absence of a KEV listing and no publicly identified proof-of-concept. EPSS data was not supplied, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified numerically. The absence of C impact (C:N) is consistent with the write-only nature of path traversal here; confidentiality is not directly threatened. Real-world priority is moderate: users who connect only to trusted FTP/SFTP servers face negligible risk, while users who connect to third-party or community-hosted servers face meaningful risk of arbitrary file writes that could lead to code execution via overwritten shell configs or SSH authorized_keys files. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker operates a malicious FTP or SFTP server and socially engineers an electerm user into connecting and downloading a file tree - for example, by sharing a server address for a software package or dataset. The server returns file or directory entries with names containing |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 11, 2026
Path traversal in electerm's recursive file transfer component allows a malicious FTP or SFTP server to write attacker-controlled content to arbitrary locations on the victim's filesystem, bypassing the user-selected download directory. The root cause is in src/client/components/file-transfer/transfer.jsx where server-supplied file.name and folder.name values are passed unsanitized to Node.js resolve(), permitting traversal sequences such as ../../ to escape the intended directory. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing exists at time of analysis, but SSVC rates the technical impact as total and the patch is confirmed in release v3.15.120.
RemediationAI
Upgrade electerm to version 3.15.120 or later; this is the vendor-released patch confirmed at https://github.com/electerm/electerm/releases/tag/v3.15.120. The fix sanitizes server-supplied filenames before path resolution and is confirmed in commit deee11ffe558eaee5cad5822949ba3a7f87ae56a. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the only reliable compensating control is to avoid connecting to any untrusted or third-party FTP or SFTP server, as there is no configuration toggle that disables the vulnerable transfer logic without disabling file download functionality entirely. Restricting electerm use to known-trusted servers (e.g., internal infrastructure only) materially reduces exposure until the patch is applied.

Technical ContextAI · show details
electerm is an Electron-based, cross-platform terminal emulator supporting FTP, SFTP, SSH, Telnet, RDP, VNC, and other protocols. The vulnerability is in src/client/components/file-transfer/transfer.jsx, specifically in the recursive download logic that calls Node.js's path.resolve(toPath, file.name) and path.resolve(toPath, folder.name) without sanitizing the server-supplied name values. CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory) is the root cause: because resolve() honors .. segments, a server that returns a filename like ../../.bashrc or ../../.ssh/authorized_keys causes electerm to write outside the intended download directory. The fix (commit deee11ffe558eaee5cad5822949ba3a7f87ae56a) imports a sanitizeFilename() helper and applies it at all three affected call sites before the resolve() call, stripping traversal sequences from server-supplied names. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:electerm:electerm:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covering all versions prior to 3.15.120.

electerm is an open-sourced terminal/ssh/sftp/telnet/serialport/RDP/VNC/Spice/ftp client. Prior to 3.15.120, electerm allows a malicious FTP or SFTP server to write attacker-controlled content outside the selected download directory because recursive transfers in src/client/components/file-transfer/transfer.jsx pass server-supplied file.name and folder.name values to resolve without sanitization. This issue is fixed in version 3.15.120.
Executive ViewAI
electerm's file transfer functionality contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows compromised or attacker-controlled file servers to deposit malicious files anywhere on the recipient's system. This creates a direct attack surface for any organization exchanging files via SFTP or FTP, particularly in supply-chain scenarios or multi-party workflows. The flaw could enable silent injection of malware, configuration tampering, or privilege escalation-turning routine file transfers into a system compromise vector.
