DescriptionCVE.org

Audiobookshelf is a self-hosted audiobook and podcast server. Prior to 2.36.0, the jwtAuthCheck function in server/auth/TokenManager.js treats JWTs with the refresh token type as bearer access tokens on API and WebSocket resource endpoints such as /api/me instead of restricting them to /auth/refresh, allowing refresh tokens to authenticate as the associated users. This issue is fixed in version 2.36.0.

AnalysisAI

JWT token type confusion in Audiobookshelf prior to 2.36.0 allows any holder of a valid refresh token to authenticate API and WebSocket endpoints (such as /api/me) that should only accept bearer access tokens. The jwtAuthCheck function in server/auth/TokenManager.js failed to validate the token's type claim, meaning refresh tokens - which are supposed to be restricted solely to the /auth/refresh endpoint - were silently accepted as legitimate session credentials across the entire API surface. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Obtain user refresh token via login or credential theft
Exploit
Present refresh token as Bearer on /api/me or WebSocket endpoint
Execution
jwtAuthCheck skips type validation, calls done(null, user)
Impact
Access protected API resources as authenticated user

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to possess a valid, unexpired JWT refresh token belonging to the target user account. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) accurately captures the risk profile. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker who previously authenticated to the Audiobookshelf instance (or who obtained another user's refresh token through credential theft or session interception) extracts the refresh token from local storage or an HTTP response. They then craft a standard API request to /api/me or a WebSocket handshake, substituting the refresh token in the Authorization: Bearer header. …
Remediation Upgrade to Audiobookshelf version 2.36.0 or later, which is confirmed to contain the fix via the tagged release at https://github.com/advplyr/audiobookshelf/releases/tag/v2.36.0 and the upstream commit 8ec547e30289ca61ebc52b13d150e3a2a6c6a752. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
