Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires: (1) victim is running Tabby on Windows - the traversal behavior depends on Windows interpreting backslashes as directory separators, so Linux and macOS users are not affected; (2) victim connects to an attacker-controlled or compromised SFTP server; (3) victim initiates a folder download via downloadFolderRecursive() or opens a remote file for inline editing via EditSFTPContextMenu.edit(). These are explicit user-triggered actions. The UI:R CVSS metric correctly captures this dependency. Exploitation is further limited to write-only impact (C:N) - the attacker can place or overwrite files but cannot read victim files through this vector. Tabby versions 1.0.235 and later are not affected.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H yields 8.1, which accurately reflects the threat model: network-reachable exploitation with no required privileges on the victim host, but requiring user interaction - the victim must connect to a malicious SFTP server and actively trigger a folder download or file edit. The I:H and A:H ratings are appropriate given that arbitrary file write to the victim's filesystem could overwrite executables, shell scripts, or configuration files. No EPSS score or CISA KEV listing is available, so quantified exploitation probability cannot be confirmed. The Windows-platform specificity (required for backslash-as-separator interpretation) and the need for user-initiated SFTP interaction constrain real-world blast radius to targeted scenarios. This is not a passive or mass-exploitation-friendly vulnerability, but it is a credible attack against users who connect to untrusted SFTP servers.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker stands up a malicious SFTP server and entices a Tabby user on Windows to connect - for example, via a phishing link, a compromised jump host, or a rogue server substituted via DNS manipulation. When the victim browses a directory and downloads a folder or opens a remote file for editing, the server returns filenames containing backslash-encoded traversal sequences such as ..\..\AppData\Roaming\startup-script.bat. Tabby's Electron layer resolves the path via Windows-native path.join(), writing attacker-controlled file content to the traversal destination outside the intended download directory. No public proof-of-concept exploit has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 10, 2026

Path traversal in Tabby terminal emulator (prior to 1.0.235) on Windows allows a malicious SFTP server to write or overwrite arbitrary files outside the user-selected download or temporary edit directory. When a Windows user downloads a folder or opens a remote file for editing, server-supplied filenames containing backslash sequences bypass POSIX path handling in the SSH layer and are later resolved by Windows-native path.join(), enabling directory traversal. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires only a user connecting to an attacker-controlled SFTP server and initiating a download or file-edit operation.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Tabby v1.0.235, available at https://github.com/Eugeny/tabby/releases/tag/v1.0.235 and patched via commit https://github.com/Eugeny/tabby/commit/3a4a41431a61d41dd51d4119e60cad9bf13c3399. The fix introduces a resolveInsideBase() function that resolves paths to absolute form and verifies the result remains within the intended base directory, throwing an error on traversal attempts. Until patching is possible, users should avoid connecting to untrusted or uncontrolled SFTP servers entirely, and specifically avoid using the folder-download or remote file-edit features against any server that is not fully trusted. There is no configuration-level workaround that neutralizes the vulnerability without fully disabling SFTP folder download and inline file edit functionality.

Technical ContextAI · show details

CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory) manifests here as a cross-platform path handling mismatch between Tabby's SSH module and its Electron host layer. In tabby-ssh/src/session/sftp.ts, SFTPSession.readdir() and _makeFile() apply POSIX path semantics, which treat backslashes as ordinary filename characters rather than directory separators. This untransformed name then propagates through downloadFolderRecursive() in tabby-ssh/src/components/sftpPanel.component.ts into the Electron layer. In tabby-electron/src/services/platform.service.ts, ElectronDirectoryDownload.createFile() passes the path to Node.js's path.join(), and in tabby-electron/src/sftpContextMenu.ts, EditSFTPContextMenu.edit() does the same for temporary edit paths. On Windows, path.join() resolves backslashes as directory separators and honors parent-directory (..) components, allowing the server-supplied name to escape the intended base directory. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:eugeny:tabby:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering all versions prior to 1.0.235.

DescriptionCVE.org

Tabby (formerly Terminus) is a highly configurable terminal emulator. Prior to 1.0.235, a malicious SFTP server can return a backslash traversal filename through entry.name. In tabby-ssh/src/session/sftp.ts, SFTPSession.readdir() and _makeFile() use POSIX path processing that preserves the backslashes as ordinary filename characters. In tabby-ssh/src/components/sftpPanel.component.ts, downloadFolderRecursive() propagates item.name into the local relative path. In tabby-electron/src/services/platform.service.ts, ElectronDirectoryDownload.createFile() passes that path to Windows-native path.join(), and in tabby-electron/src/sftpContextMenu.ts, EditSFTPContextMenu.edit() passes item.name to path.join() for the temporary edit path. Windows interprets the preserved backslashes and parent-directory components as traversal, allowing attacker-controlled content to be created or overwritten outside the selected download directory or temporary edit directory. This issue is fixed in version 1.0.235.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Tabby terminal emulator on Windows prior to version 1.0.235 contains a path traversal vulnerability enabling attackers to write or overwrite arbitrary files through malicious SFTP server responses. Development and IT personnel using Tabby for remote file management face direct risk of system compromise or data tampering. This vulnerability poses a material security threat to any organization with Windows-based terminal users.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Disable SFTP functionality in Tabby if not operationally required; restrict SFTP connections to an explicit whitelist of known trusted servers; segment Windows systems requiring SFTP access on isolated network zones; implement file integrity monitoring on system directories to detect unauthorized file modifications; train users to avoid connecting to untrusted SFTP servers.
