Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a specific deployment: the broker must accept traffic through a trusted PROXY-protocol path (proxy_protocol = true) AND the backend AMQP 0-9-1 / AMQP 1.0 / Stream listener must be loopback-bound, so the listener-side socket address reads as 127.0.0.1. The targeted account must be a loopback-restricted user (by default guest, which is in loopback_users) and the attacker must know or default to its credentials (guest/guest out of the box). Limiting factors: brokers not using PROXY protocol, or with listeners bound to routable interfaces, or with the guest/loopback users removed or repermissioned, are not exploitable via this path; no user interaction is needed and no prior authenticated session is required beyond the loopback account's own credentials.

Impact

The signals conflict and must be weighed carefully. The published CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, score 10.0) treats this as a trivial, unauthenticated, network-wide critical - but that rating understates the preconditions: the description explicitly requires a non-default deployment (PROXY protocol accepted over a trusted path AND a loopback-bound backend listener). That is an environmental prerequisite, so real-world attack complexity is higher than AC:L implies. Countervailing signals agree it is not a mass-exploitation event: EPSS is only 0.34% (26th percentile), SSVC marks Automatable=no and Technical Impact=partial, and there is no CISA KEV entry. SSVC does record a proof-of-concept. Net assessment: this is a genuine and serious priority for the specific population of RabbitMQ operators running behind a PROXY-protocol-terminating proxy/load balancer with loopback-bound listeners (a common containerized/HAProxy/Envoy pattern), where a remote attacker can log in as guest/guest and gain full broker access; for the majority of deployments not using that topology it is not remotely reachable. Treat the 10.0 as a worst-case configuration score, not a universal one.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A RabbitMQ cluster runs behind an HAProxy/Envoy load balancer that speaks PROXY protocol to broker listeners bound to 127.0.0.1, with the default guest account still present. A remote attacker on the network connects through the load balancer to the AMQP or Stream port and authenticates as guest/guest; the broker reads the proxy's loopback socket address, treats the session as local, and grants access. The attacker then publishes, consumes, and manipulates messages and queues with guest's permissions. A proof-of-concept is reported per SSVC, and the low attack complexity of the authentication step (default credentials) makes exploitation straightforward once the vulnerable topology is present.

AnalysisAIv3 – Jul 13, 2026

Authentication bypass in RabbitMQ (broker versions prior to 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, and 4.2.6) lets a loopback-restricted account such as the default guest user authenticate from a remote network when the broker sits behind a trusted PROXY-protocol path and the backend listener is loopback-bound. Because the loopback check evaluates the listener-side socket address (which appears as 127.0.0.1 to the local proxy) instead of the real client source carried in the PROXY header, the 'local only' restriction on guest is silently defeated across AMQP 0-9-1, AMQP 1.0, and the Stream Protocol. SSVC records a proof-of-concept; there is no CISA KEV listing and EPSS is low (0.34%, 26th percentile), indicating the flaw is potent but not yet mass-exploited.

v2 Jul 13, 2026 - 21:28 cvss changed CVSS 10.0

Authentication loopback-restriction bypass in RabbitMQ broker (versions before 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, and 4.2.6) lets a loopback-only account such as the default 'guest' user authenticate from a remote network. When the broker sits behind a trusted PROXY-protocol path and its backend listener is bound to loopback, the loopback check inspects the listener-side socket address rather than the real client source, so remote clients are treated as local. A proof-of-concept exists (SSVC: poc) but there is no public exploit identified as weaponized and the issue is not in CISA KEV; EPSS is low at 0.34% (26th percentile), consistent with a non-default configuration requirement.

v1 Jul 10, 2026 - 21:58 CVSS 6.8

Authentication bypass in RabbitMQ Server allows a loopback-restricted account such as the default 'guest' user to connect remotely across AMQP 0-9-1, AMQP 1.0, and Stream Protocol when PROXY protocol is in use, because the loopback restriction check incorrectly evaluates the listener-side socket address rather than the real client source IP extracted from the PROXY protocol header. Versions prior to 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, and 4.2.6 across all active release branches are affected, with exposure limited to deployments that explicitly enable PROXY protocol on loopback-bound listeners. No public exploit code and no CISA KEV listing are identified at time of analysis; however, the authentication bypass nature and potential access to sensitive message queue data merit prompt patching in any affected configuration.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to RabbitMQ 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, or 4.2.6 (or later) as appropriate for your branch, per advisory GHSA-36m6-588r-vqcw and PRs #15936/#15940 (commits 7273c9e and 9f8c39f). If immediate patching is not possible, remove the enabling conditions: disable PROXY protocol on the affected listeners (set proxy_protocol = false) unless it is strictly required - note this loses real client IP visibility and breaks proxies that depend on it; alternatively bind listeners to a routable interface rather than loopback, or ensure the terminating proxy/load balancer is not reachable by untrusted networks. As a strong compensating control, remove guest from loopback_users and delete or disable the default guest account, or reset its well-known guest/guest password and scope its permissions - this closes the most impactful path since the flaw only matters for loopback-restricted users. Also restrict network access to the AMQP (5671/5672), AMQP 1.0, and Stream (5551/5552) ports to trusted sources. Verify PROXY protocol is only accepted from a trusted, authenticated proxy tier.

Technical ContextAI · show details

RabbitMQ is an Erlang-based message broker implementing AMQP 0-9-1, AMQP 1.0, MQTT, and its native Stream Protocol. By default the guest account is a 'loopback user' - RabbitMQ permits it to authenticate only over local connections via rabbit_access_control:check_user_loopback/2. The vulnerability (CWE-287, Improper Authentication) is a source-address confusion: the loopback determination was performed on the TCP socket's local/peer address as seen by the listener rather than on the real client IP. When PROXY protocol (proxy_protocol = true) is enabled and the actual TCP connection originates from a trusted local proxy or load balancer bound to loopback, the socket address read is 127.0.0.1, so the check passes even though the true client (conveyed in the PROXY protocol preamble as peer_host) is remote. The upstream fix in rabbit_amqp_reader.erl and rabbit_reader.erl changes the check to use the parsed PeerHost value instead of the raw Socket, and adds property-based tests (is_loopback_prop, check_user_loopback_prop) covering IPv4, IPv6, and IPv4-mapped-IPv6 loopback ranges. Affected product per CPE: cpe:2.3:a:rabbitmq:rabbitmq-server.

DescriptionNVD

RabbitMQ is a messaging and streaming broker. Prior to 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, and 4.2.6, AMQP 0-9-1, AMQP 1.0, and Stream Protocol authentication can allow a loopback-restricted user such as guest to connect remotely when traffic is accepted through a trusted PROXY-protocol path and the backend listener is loopback-bound because the loopback check uses the listener-side socket address instead of the real client source. This issue is fixed in versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, and 4.2.6.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

RabbitMQ broker versions prior to 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, and 4.2.6 contain a critical authentication bypass (CVSS 10.0) with publicly available exploit code that enables unauthenticated remote attackers to access message brokers when deployed behind proxy infrastructure, defeating default 'guest' account restrictions. This could enable unauthorized message interception, system manipulation, and operational disruption for any organization relying on RabbitMQ for asynchronous processing or event-driven architecture.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch to RabbitMQ 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6 or later. If patching cannot be completed within 48 hours, interim mitigations include: disabling the default guest account, removing or reconfiguring PROXY-protocol listeners, and implementing strict network segmentation to restrict RabbitMQ access to authorized internal systems only.
