MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to run the BOSH CLI against a release whose config/blobs.yml contains a maliciously crafted path key with directory-traversal sequences - i.e., an operator or CI/CD job must sync, download, or otherwise process an attacker-supplied or tampered release (UI:A). No authentication to the CLI is required (PR:N) and attack complexity is low (AC:L), but the traversal only fires during a blob sync/download operation. Limiting factors: the attacker must first get their malicious blobs.yml in front of the victim (supply-chain foothold or a compromised/untrusted release), and impact is bounded by the filesystem privileges of the account running the CLI, so trusted-release-only workflows and least-privilege execution substantially reduce real-world exposure. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N) describes a network-delivered, low-complexity, unauthenticated issue with high confidentiality and integrity impact but no availability impact, gated by user/operator interaction (UI:A) - the victim must run the CLI against a malicious blobs.yml. This is a real-but-conditional risk: it is not a remotely-triggerable server flaw, so it will not be mass-exploited like a network daemon RCE, but it is dangerous in supply-chain and CI/CD contexts where operators sync third-party or tampered releases. EPSS was not provided, and there is no KEV listing and no known POC, which - combined with the UI requirement - points to targeted/supply-chain abuse rather than widespread automated exploitation. Note a tension to verify: VI:H/VC:H (file write plus exfiltration) is a strong impact rating, yet real-world impact depends heavily on the privileges of the account running the CLI and whether operators consume untrusted releases; treat the 8.5 as an upper bound for typical trusted-release workflows. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes or tampers with a BOSH release so its config/blobs.yml contains a path key with traversal sequences pointing outside the blobstore directory. When an operator or CI pipeline runs the BOSH CLI to sync/download that release's blobs, the CLI writes attacker-controlled files to arbitrary host locations and can expose sensitive files, potentially leading to code execution or credential theft depending on the write target. No public POC is known, and success requires the victim to process the malicious release (UI:A). |

Arbitrary file write and information disclosure in the Cloud Foundry BOSH CLI tool (versions prior to v7.10.4) stems from insufficient sanitization of the path key inside blobs.yml, letting a crafted release blob spec escape the intended blobstore directory. When an operator syncs or downloads blobs from a malicious or tampered release, the CLI can write files to attacker-controlled locations on the host and expose sensitive files. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and it is not listed in CISA KEV; the vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.5 (High).
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: v7.10.4 - upgrade the BOSH CLI to v7.10.4 or later on all operator workstations and CI/CD runners, per the Cloud Foundry advisory (https://www.cloudfoundry.org/blog/cve-2026-47826-blobs-yaml-path-traversal-allows-file-writes/). Until upgrade is complete, the practical compensating control is to only run blob sync/download operations against releases from trusted, integrity-verified sources and to avoid processing blobs.yml from untrusted or externally-authored releases; the trade-off is reduced flexibility in consuming third-party releases. Additionally, run the CLI under a low-privilege, dedicated account with a constrained working directory so a traversal write cannot reach sensitive system paths (trade-off: may require adjusting CI permissions), and inspect blobs.yml path values for ../ or absolute paths before syncing when handling any external release.

Technical ContextAI · show details
BOSH is Cloud Foundry's release-engineering and deployment orchestration system; the CLI packages, uploads, and syncs 'releases' whose large binary artifacts are tracked as blobs described in a config/blobs.yml manifest keyed by relative path. The vulnerability is a classic path/directory traversal (CWE-22-class) in how the CLI resolves the path key from blobs.yml: values containing traversal sequences (e.g. ../ or absolute paths) are not constrained to the blobstore working directory, so the resolved destination can point anywhere the CLI process can write. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:cloudfoundry_foundation:bosh_cli_tool, i.e. the standalone BOSH CLI binary rather than a BOSH director. The same untrusted-path handling that enables writes outside the sandbox is also what permits reading/exfiltrating sensitive files, consistent with the vendor's Information Disclosure tag.

Malicious blobs.yml is network-delivered but the operator must run the CLI to sync it (UI:R), no auth needed (PR:N); traversal enables file write (I:H) and file exfiltration (C:H) with no availability impact.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
The blobs.yml path key traversal vulnerability in the BOSH CLI tool allows an attacker to write arbitrary files and exfiltrate sensitive information. Affected versions: BOSH CLI tool versions prior to v7.10.4.
Executive ViewAI
Cloud Foundry BOSH CLI versions prior to v7.10.4 contain a path traversal vulnerability enabling attackers to write arbitrary files and disclose sensitive information when operators download or sync blobs from tampered releases. Organizations managing cloud infrastructure with BOSH CLI could face full system compromise and credential exposure if they interact with malicious release packages.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: validate cryptographic signatures on all release blobs before sync/download; restrict operator access to download only from approved, internally-controlled release repositories; implement file-integrity monitoring to detect unauthorized writes to system directories; enforce principle of least privilege for BOSH CLI operator accounts; consider sandboxing BOSH CLI operations or air-gapping affected infrastructure until patch availability.
