Network API access with a low-privilege provisioning role (PR:L); file-overwrite primitive maps to I:H, with C:N and A:N since only integrity is directly demonstrated.

AnalysisAI
Arbitrary file overwrite in OpenStack Ironic (bare-metal provisioning service) lets an authenticated tenant supply a crafted ISO image whose internal paths use directory-traversal sequences, causing files to be written outside the intended deployment directory on the Ironic host during provisioning. Multiple release branches are affected up to 35.0.2, 32.0.2, 29.0.6, and 26.1.7, and a vendor patch is available. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is low (0.23%), consistent with the CISA SSVC assessment of no known exploitation.
Technical ContextAI
OpenStack Ironic is the OpenStack bare-metal provisioning service that manages the deployment of operating-system images onto physical servers, including handling ISO images used for virtual-media and deploy/boot workflows. The root cause is CWE-23 (Relative Path Traversal): when Ironic unpacks or processes a supplied ISO image during deployment, path components inside the image are not properly sanitized, so entries containing '../' or absolute-style sequences resolve outside the intended extraction/staging directory. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:openstack:ironic across all listed instances, i.e. the Ironic conductor/service code path that consumes crafted ISO images. Because the file operations run in the context of the Ironic service on the deployment host, traversal enables writing (overwriting) files at attacker-influenced locations on that host.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patched versions are available: upgrade Ironic to 35.0.2 (for the 33.0.0+ branch), 32.0.2 (for the 30.0.0+ branch), 29.0.6 (for the 27.0.0+ branch), or 26.1.7 (for the 17.0.0 through 26.x branch), whichever corresponds to your deployed release line. Distribution users should apply their packaged fix - for Ubuntu, follow USN-8421-1 (https://ubuntu.com/security/notices/USN-8421-1) - and review the upstream Launchpad advisory (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ironic/+bug/2148333) and oss-security post (https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2026/q2/798) for exact commit references. Until patched, restrict who can submit deploy/boot ISO images to trusted operators only via Ironic RBAC and project policy, avoid exposing the Ironic API to untrusted networks, and validate/scan supplied ISO images out-of-band before use; note these controls reduce exposure but do not fix the traversal, and tightening RBAC may disrupt legitimate self-service bare-metal provisioning workflows.
