Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated Kibana session holding the connector management privilege (the Actions and Connectors feature, typically granted via the Management → Stack Management privilege set or kibana_admin role), and the target Kibana deployment must have the operator-configured connection allowlist (xpack.actions.allowedHosts or customHostSettings) in use - the bug specifically defeats that control, so deployments that never enforced an allowlist gain no additional protection but also have nothing being bypassed. The attack is specifically performed by configuring a Webhook connector with a crafted target URL pointing to a destination the allowlist intended to block. Exploitation is limited by the PR:L requirement (no anonymous access), by the need for the operator to have actually configured restrictive egress controls in the first place for the bypass to be meaningful, and by the value of network-reachable internal destinations from the Kibana host.

Impact

The CVSS 7.7 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N) accurately reflects the realistic risk profile: network-reachable, low complexity, requires low-privileged authentication, no user interaction, and notably a Scope=Changed with High confidentiality impact - meaning the attacker can pivot to read data outside Kibana's own trust boundary (the classic SSRF pivot). The PR:L requirement is meaningful: an attacker must already hold an account with connector management privileges, which is typically restricted to administrators or trusted automation roles, sharply limiting opportunistic exploitation. There is no EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC referenced in the available data, so this is best characterized as an insider-or-post-compromise privilege-bypass risk rather than a mass-exploitation candidate, but the Scope:Changed/C:H combination makes it high priority where Kibana is deployed alongside sensitive internal services (cloud metadata, Elasticsearch admin endpoints, vault APIs).

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has obtained or been granted a Kibana account with connector management privileges - for example, a low-tier SOC analyst role over-provisioned with kibana_admin or a leaked CI service account - logs in to Kibana, creates a Webhook connector whose URL targets an internal-only address such as a cloud metadata endpoint or an Elasticsearch admin API, and triggers the connector via a test action or rule execution. Kibana's server process issues the outbound request despite the operator-configured allowlist, returning response data or side effects to the attacker and enabling credential theft, internal reconnaissance, or pivoting onto the internal network.

AnalysisAIv1 – May 28, 2026

Server-side request forgery in Elastic Kibana allows authenticated users holding connector management privileges to bypass operator-configured egress allowlists by crafting a Webhook connector with an arbitrary target. The flaw enables Kibana to issue outbound HTTP requests to internal or otherwise restricted destinations, exposing sensitive data accessible from the Kibana host. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the vulnerability is not present on the CISA KEV list.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to upgrade Kibana to a vendor-released patched version - 9.2.8 on the 9.2 branch or 9.3.2 on the 9.3 branch, per Elastic advisory ESA-2026-37 at https://discuss.elastic.co/t/kibana-9-2-8-and-9-3-2-security-update-esa-2026-37/386557. Where immediate patching is not possible, compensating controls include revoking the connector management Kibana privilege from non-administrator roles (this disables alerting/cases connector creation for those users but contains the attack surface to fully trusted operators), placing Kibana behind an egress proxy or network firewall that enforces destination allowlisting at L3/L4 independently of Kibana's in-app allowlist (which adds operational overhead and may break legitimate webhook destinations), and blocking Kibana's outbound access to cloud instance metadata endpoints (169.254.169.254, fd00:ec2::254) and internal management CIDRs to neutralize the highest-impact SSRF pivots.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability lives in Kibana's Actions/Connectors subsystem, specifically the Webhook connector that lets administrators wire alerting and case workflows to external HTTP endpoints. Operators can configure a connection allowlist (xpack.actions.allowedHosts / customHostSettings) intended to constrain which destinations Kibana may contact from its server-side process. CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery) is the root cause class: input controlling an outbound request destination is not adequately validated against the allowlist, so a crafted connector configuration causes the Kibana node process to issue requests on behalf of the attacker to destinations the operator explicitly tried to block, including potentially cloud metadata services, internal management planes, or other intranet hosts reachable from the Kibana server.

DescriptionCVE.org

Server-Side Request Forgery (CWE-918) in Kibana allows authenticated users with connector management privileges to bypass the operator-configured connection allowlist. By configuring a Webhook connector with a crafted target, an attacker can cause Kibana to issue outbound requests to destinations that the egress restriction controls were intended to block.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Elastic Kibana contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability (CVSS 7.7) that allows authenticated users with connector management privileges to bypass security controls and access restricted internal systems, potentially exposing sensitive data and infrastructure. This risk is particularly acute for organizations with network segmentation or egress restrictions, where privileged Kibana users could circumvent those protections. No vendor patch is currently available, requiring immediate interim controls.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) Restrict Kibana connector management permissions to essential administrators with mandatory approval workflow; (2) Implement network-level egress filtering blocking all requests to internal network ranges and sensitive systems; (3) Disable webhook connectors entirely if not operationally required; (4) Deploy comprehensive audit logging and alerting on all connector lifecycle events (creation, modification, deletion) to detect exploitation attempts; (5) Isolate Kibana infrastructure on separate network segment with explicit outbound allowlist to authorized external services only.
