| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires: (1) possession of valid primary credentials for a target eLabFTW account, (2) the target account must have MFA enabled, (3) the authentication session must reach a state where the MFA secret is not properly retained in the session object (allowing fallback to request parameters), and (4) the attacker must have network access to the eLabFTW login endpoint. The vulnerability is NOT exploitable against accounts without MFA enabled, nor against accounts where the session MFA state is properly maintained throughout the authentication flow. AC:H in the CVSS vector confirms that 'certain conditions' must be met-likely timing-dependent or state-dependent conditions during the brief window between primary credential validation and MFA validation. |
| Impact | The CVSS score of 5.9 with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N indicates network-accessible exploitation with HIGH attack complexity and HIGH privilege requirements (PR:H). The contradiction between the relatively low CVSS score and the serious impact (confidentiality and integrity compromise) reflects that exploitation requires an attacker to already possess valid primary credentials. The AC:H rating suggests 'certain conditions' must align-likely specific session states or timing windows where MFA state is not properly initialized. Since PR:H is present, this is an authenticated attack where an account holder with valid credentials can escalate to full account access by bypassing their own MFA enforcement. Real-world risk is moderate: the vulnerability only affects users who have enabled MFA and exists within a narrow authentication window. For organizations where MFA adoption is high and accounts with valid credentials are relatively restricted, this represents elevated risk. For deployments with weak credential security or where MFA is not widely enabled, impact is lower. The need for valid primary credentials significantly limits the threat surface compared to unauthenticated authentication bypasses. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker obtains a valid eLabFTW account credential through phishing, password spray, or credential stuffing. When logging in with the compromised credential, the attacker reaches the MFA challenge screen. If the MFA session state has not been properly initialized (a race condition or specific configuration scenario), the attacker submits their own TOTP secret value in the authentication request. The application accepts the attacker-controlled TOTP secret instead of validating against the victim's actual MFA enrollment, allowing the attacker to complete login and access the victim's account, including sensitive lab data. |

Multi-factor authentication bypass in eLabFTW through version 5.4.1 allows attackers with valid primary credentials to complete login using an attacker-controlled TOTP secret, circumventing the second factor requirement and gaining unauthorized account access. The vulnerability stems from inconsistent MFA state preservation across authentication steps. This issue is patched in version 5.4.2.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: eLabFTW 5.4.2. Users should upgrade immediately from version 5.4.1 or earlier to 5.4.2 or later. The patch modifies LoginController.php to retrieve the MFA secret exclusively from the session object, eliminating the code path that allowed user-supplied TOTP secrets. For users unable to upgrade immediately, compensating controls include enforcing strong password policies to reduce the likelihood of valid credential compromise, implementing account lockout policies after failed authentication attempts, and monitoring authentication logs for unusual patterns (e.g., successful logins from new IP addresses immediately after MFA prompts). However, these controls do not address the underlying MFA bypass and should only be temporary measures. Apply the patch within 7 days for production environments.

Technical ContextAI · show details
eLabFTW is an open-source electronic lab notebook platform written in PHP. The vulnerability exists in the LoginController.php authentication flow, specifically in the MfaHelper instantiation during the multi-factor authentication validation step. The affected code previously accepted MFA secrets from both the session (server-side state) and directly from user-supplied request parameters, creating a race condition or logic flaw where an attacker could supply their own TOTP secret if the session state was not properly initialized. The fix (commit 8b7a575) restricts MFA secret retrieval to only the session object, eliminating the fallback to user-controlled request parameters. CWE-302 (Authentication Bypass by Alternate Name) indicates the root cause is improper validation of authentication credentials or state.

DescriptionGitHub Advisory
eLabFTW is an open source electronic lab notebook. In elabftw versions through 5.4.1, the login flow did not reliably preserve the multi-factor authentication state across authentication steps. Under certain conditions, an attacker with valid primary credentials could complete authentication with an attacker-controlled TOTP secret and bypass the additional factor. This could result in unauthorized account access. This issue is fixed in version 5.4.2.
