Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated tenant with permission to write/upload that tenant's Alertmanager configuration in a Grafana Mimir or GEM deployment that accepts tenant-supplied receiver configurations. The attacker must set the HTTP client fields http_headers.<name>.files or basic_auth.username_file (the two settings the local-file check failed to cover) to the path of a file readable by the Alertmanager process, and must direct the receiver at a server they control; disclosure occurs only when a notification is actually sent, at which point the file contents are placed in an outgoing request header. Limiting factors: exploitation is impossible without tenant config-write privilege, is confined to deployments that allow tenant-supplied Alertmanager configs, and is bounded by what the Alertmanager process user can read on the host; it yields confidentiality impact only (no integrity or availability effect). The complete fix is upgrading to Mimir 3.1.7/3.2.2 or GEM 2.17.20 (GEM 2.11-2.16 receive no fix).

Impact

The vendor-supplied CVSS 3.1 vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N, 7.7 High) is internally consistent with the described mechanism: a network-reachable configuration-upload API (AV:N), no special triggering complexity (AC:L), a low-privileged but authenticated tenant (PR:L), no user interaction (UI:N), a scope change reflecting that a tenant can cause the Alertmanager process to read host files outside its own tenant boundary (S:C), and confidentiality-only impact (C:H, I:N, A:N). The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', indicating an elevated but non-emergency priority. KEV is not listed, so there is no confirmed active exploitation, and no EPSS score was provided, so widespread-exploitation probability cannot be quantified from this data. No proof-of-concept or exploit reference appears in the input - the only reference is the Grafana advisory - so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'. Net assessment: this is a genuine, well-characterized tenant-isolation / secret-disclosure flaw that matters specifically in multi-tenant GEM/Mimir deployments where tenants can supply their own Alertmanager receiver configurations; the PR:L requirement and the need for a tenant-supplied-config deployment model meaningfully constrain real-world exposure, so it is a real priority to patch but not a drop-everything emergency on current signals. EPSS and KEV data are absent rather than contradictory, so no conflicting signals were observed.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

In a multi-tenant Grafana Mimir or GEM deployment, a tenant who is permitted to upload their own Alertmanager configuration sets http_headers.<name>.files or basic_auth.username_file to point at a sensitive file readable by the Alertmanager process (such as credentials or configuration) and configures the receiver to send notifications to a server the attacker controls. When a notification fires, Alertmanager reads the referenced file and places its contents into an outgoing request header, exfiltrating host secrets to the attacker. No public exploit code is identified in the provided sources.

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 02, 2026

Authenticated tenants who can write their Alertmanager configuration in Grafana Mimir or Grafana Enterprise Metrics (GEM) can read arbitrary files from the Alertmanager host and exfiltrate them to a server they control. The receiver validation that rejects local file references missed two HTTP client settings, http_headers.<name>.files and basic_auth.username_file, so a tenant can point them at any file the Alertmanager process can read; the contents are then placed in an outgoing request header when a notification fires. The issue is rated 7.7 High (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N) with confidentiality-only impact, is fixed in Mimir 3.1.7 and 3.2.2 and in GEM 2.17.20, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Grafana Mimir to 3.1.7 or 3.2.2 (whichever branch you track), or upgrade Grafana Enterprise Metrics to 2.17.20; GEM 2.11 through 2.16 will not receive a fix, so users on those releases must move to 2.17.20 or later. The vendor's complete fix is the upgrade - see https://grafana.com/security/security-advisories/cve-2026-81938. Because exploitation requires a tenant that is permitted to write its Alertmanager configuration and a deployment that accepts tenant-supplied receiver configurations, limiting that config-write permission to tenants that genuinely need it reduces exposure for the duration of the upgrade window, at the cost of removing self-service Alertmanager configuration for the affected tenants; confirming the Alertmanager process user cannot read sensitive host files (credentials, configuration) limits what a successful attempt would yield.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Grafana Mimir's Alertmanager accepts per-tenant configuration uploads, including notification receiver definitions whose HTTP client block supports file-backed values such as HTTP headers and basic-auth user names. Because those values are read from the filesystem by the Alertmanager process at notification time, the configuration surface is effectively a file-read primitive unless every file-referencing field is filtered. Mimir added a check rejecting tenant-supplied receivers that reference local files, but it did not cover http_headers.<name>.files or basic_auth.username_file. This is tracked as CWE-22 (path traversal): the validation intended to keep tenant-supplied paths outside the host filesystem was incomplete, allowing a tenant to cross out of its own configuration boundary into files owned by the Alertmanager service account - the CVSS scope change (S:C) reflects that boundary crossing. Disclosure requires the tenant to set one of the two uncovered fields to a target path and direct the receiver at an attacker-controlled endpoint, and it occurs only when a notification is actually sent, with the read content echoed into an outgoing request header. Our assessment confirms the vector is internally consistent with this mechanism: network-reachable config upload (AV:N), no special triggering complexity (AC:L), low-privileged but authenticated tenant (PR:L), no user interaction (UI:N), and confidentiality-only impact (C:H, I:N, A:N). Exploitation is gated on tenant config-write privilege and on the deployment permitting tenant-supplied Alertmanager configurations, and the reachable data is bounded by the Alertmanager process user's read permissions. GEM, which is built on Mimir, inherits the same behavior.

DescriptionCVE.org

Grafana Mimir's Alertmanager rejects tenant-supplied receiver configurations that reference local files, but the check did not cover two HTTP client settings: http_headers.<name>.files and basic_auth.username_file. A tenant permitted to upload an Alertmanager configuration could point these fields at any file readable by the Alertmanager process. When a notification was sent, Alertmanager read the file and put its contents in a header of the outgoing request. By directing the receiver at a server they control, the tenant could read files from the Alertmanager host, such as credentials and configuration.

Exploitation requires permission to write the tenant's Alertmanager configuration. Grafana Enterprise Metrics (GEM), which is built on Mimir, is also affected. The issue is fixed in Mimir 3.1.7 and 3.2.2 and in GEM 2.17.20. GEM 2.11 through 2.16 will not receive a fix; users on those versions should upgrade to 2.17.20 or later.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity vulnerability in Grafana Mimir and Enterprise Metrics allows authenticated tenants with Alertmanager configuration rights to read arbitrary files from the Alertmanager host and exfiltrate them to an external server. This impacts multi-tenant deployments where tenants are granted configuration access, potentially exposing sensitive host files and undermining tenant isolation; leadership should care because it could lead to data breaches and compliance violations.
